What is a SERF?
Blackpool Borough fund Boundary Primary school to have two Special Education Resource Facility for children in Blackpool. We are special classrooms in schools that cater to meet the needs of children who show challenging behaviour.

What will we learn?
Our morning curriculum is focused on Literacy and Numeracy. Our priority is to assess any learning need the children might have and address them, whether they are academic or more personal. Children will be encouraged to be confident learners so that they are successful on return to their ‘home’ class.
Learning and therefore personal achievement is supported by lessons which are matched to assessed need, have differentiated and varied tasks and outcomes and have personal support by a key worker who knows the child well.

Our afternoon curriculum is based on learning key skills, knowledge and understanding for your child to be successful in your child’s ‘home’ classroom. Children are encouraged in these lessons to be:

Your child will learn with us for four days a week. On Wednesday they will return to their base school and practice their skills. Their Keyworker will visit to help and support your child and school staff.
Pupils arrive by 9.00am, transport pending and are collected (by parents or taxi) at 3.00pm.
Each day consists of Numeracy and Literacy. The morning playtime is at 10.30 and the children use the playground attached to each SERF.
There is an established routine whereby additional pupils join the group for lunch and also for ‘protected’ play in the SERF playground. It is SERF policy to invite/involve/include similar aged pupils as frequently as possible in a range of activities.
The afternoon timetable begins at 1.00 with a more topic based approach. At 2.45 the children participate in a group meeting to evaluate the day.
You will be invited to an induction meeting to meet the staff, see the rooms and have this booklet explained to you. You will also be invited to special celebration events that we hope you will take part in. We will expect to see you at review meetings every half term that will be held with us, base school staff and you. Again these meetings will be to celebrate success and set future targets. Other agencies may also be invited as part of the support for your child.
Our Rules and Rewards
Each child has personal targets that they need to work upon and improve but we also discuss our class rules as part of our daily routine. Rules and routines help us to work together fairly and enjoyably.
At the end of every session we reflect on our learning, our targets and our behaviour. We award points which when added up lead to a reward. Points are lost through poor behaviour.
At the end of each lesson, children fill in a chart which they will bring home with them every day. This allows us to celebrate success and for you to discuss the school day at the home. This record supports us in monitoring your child’s progress and readiness to return to base school.
Consequences for Inappropriate Behaviour
In the SERF, the following are seen as behaviours which are not acceptable:
Damage to property
Disrespect of others learning
Our Rules and Rewards celebrate success but also develop a sense of responsibility and ownership for our actions; included in this is developing strategies to deal with inappropriate behaviour in a more acceptable way.
The following steps are used when a child displays behaviour which is not acceptable:
When the child has become calm and is self controlled, they are ready to join the group. They will spend some time discussing and reflecting on the incident with their key worker so they can learn from it and move forward.
All staff are fully trained in positive handling techniques and this will only be used when ALL other means have been exhausted.
We came into school and a Jungle had taken over our corridor! There were animal foot prints and skeletons everywhere! We had to work together as a team to find all the clues and facts!

Summer 2: Oh We do like to be beside the seaside!
This half term we will be looking at the geography of the seaside, animals we might find there and the history of seaside holidays in Blackpool.
Road Trip - Transport
In Summer 1, we will be learning about how transport has changed through the ages. We will be learning our Geography field skills to understand our school environment.
The Circle of Life! 20th Feb 2017
To launch our new topic, we have been to the Sealife Centre to learn about the life cycles of sea creatures. We have asked questions, touched the animals and started to understand the life cycle of some creatures.
We have been waiting patiently for our caterpillars to grow into Butterflies - it hasn't happened yet. But we have been able to measure the plants that we have grown. Our broad bean, cress and sunflower seeds all used water and light to grow successfully. For Science, we also sorted mammals, amphibians and discussed their differences.
In Computing, we have been learning how to use different paint tools online, using flood, brush and stamps. We have also been planning journeys for a Beebot using directional language.
We have been doing lots of PHSE to discuss our feelings and emotions. We linked our thankful work to Red Nose day and Mothers day. We had a visit from Lexi the therapy dog. We have been learning self regulation skills.
Our learning about the Easter Story was interesting. We understand more about why Christians celebrate easter, why we have easter Eggs. We ordered Pictures of the Easter Story after watching a video.
