This half term we have been working with the medium of charcoal. After practising a variety of skills and looking at artists such as Laura McKendry, we created our final pieces.

Today we began our Art journey of graphic design. By the end of the unit we will turn 2D drawings into 3D models based on food packaging. Today we looked at what graphic design is and how companies employ graphic designers to create appealing packages to appeal to consumers. We also looked at how typography is used to make words stand out and changing the style of letters will add an extra layer to the overall design.
Year 4 - Storytelling through drawing

Today we evaluated our art from last week (based on the poem 'A Day in Autumn'). We used evaluation post it notes and stem sentences to write about our illustrations. Then we used our reflections to start our final pieces.
Year 6 - Forest School (Indoors!)

The awful weather conditions did not stop Year 6 enjoying their Forest School sessions this week. Instead of using our Forest School area, we brought the activities inside. The children started the session by foraging for resources to make Christmas crafts and decorations. They learned skills including splitting wood and bending willow to make their own creations.

The children explored the skill of chiaroscuro in art which means 'light- dark'. We looked at how to use charcoal to create shadows and then used rubbers and chalk to create highlights. We will sue these skills in our fianl piece.

Nursery visited outerspace this week! We read the story "The Way Back Home" by Oliver Jeffers about a boy who finds an areoplane and flies all the way to the moon! He runs out of petrol and meets an alien whose spaceship has broken down! We learnt all about the different planets and used balloons to print some planets. Outside we built a rocket using the bricks and went on lots of adventures to space! One day we discovered some aliens in our garden and we talked about how they might of got there. We also used magnetic shapes and building blocks to build our own rockets. We had to think carefully about the shapes we needed to make a rocket. Its been a very busy week!

Nursery have taken to the seas this week and become Pirates! We've made treasure maps, counted golden coins, worked together to a build pirate ship and made special pirate brews! The children have loved playing together to make up their own pirate stories and have even been fishing for their tea!

Yesterday, we explored using materials in different ways to make something they aren't by twisting, bending, folding, cutting, tearing and stretching. We did this to create roots and shoots from a source. We likened it to a flower with the roots going down out of a source/seed and the shoots stretching upwards towards the light. We tried to be creative and join the materials in different ways.

Today we practised the medium of charcoal. We did some mark making first, then we set scenes to draw.

On Friday 10th November, Boundary Primary took part in a whole school act of Remembrance.
It began with all the children, from Nursery to Year 6, planting the poppies they had made in our Remembrance Garden.
Then, at 11am, the school came together for an outdoor assembly. We all observed a two minutes silence and listened to important historical facts about the significance of the poppies we were wearing.
During the week, each class took part in creating poppy art and each year group was also given a silhouette of a soldier which they were asked to decorate around the theme of Remembrance. This activity focussed all our minds on who we were remembering and why it is important to remember them. The completed soldiers were then displayed around the school hall and will remain there – helping us to think about those who gave their lives during war and those who continue to serve to keep us and our country safe.

This week the children in Reception have been learning about Remembrance Day.
They started the week with their first visit to the hall for assembly about why we wear poppies, they also learnt about events that happened in the past in Blackpool, where they live.
Throughout the week, they were very busy painting and collaging poppies and also labelling poppies they had drawn. Some of their work was then placed on a sillhouette solldier to be displayed in the hall.
Finally, on Friiday, they joined the whole school by planting a hand made poppy in the Boundary Remembrance Garden, followed by an outdoor whole school Remembrance Service.
Reception Celebrating Bonfire Night

This week the children in Reception have been talking about why people celebrate bonfire night and how this is linked to events in the past. We talked about how events in the past can impact the present day. We dicussed different customs and routines within families and the importance of keeping ourselves safe whilst we enjoy the celebrations. The children enjoyed getting creative making their own bonfire night pictures and fireworks.

Nursery celebrated Firework Night with a big bang! The children explored the different sounds fireworks make and used their bodies to become fireworks! They used their imaginations to create firework patterns on special scratch paper and explored a firework sensory tray. Outside, the children all sat round a bonfire and drank pretend hot chocolate. The children also explored changes by melting chocolate to create some breadstick sparklers - they were delicious!

In preparation for Remembrance Day over the weekend, we have been busy doing an art activitiy to make poppy art. We have spoken about why we celebrate Remembrance Day and practise a new medium using clay in art. Year 3 created the background of our clay art using charcoal. We have also been looking at some famous Remembrance poems and some children have used their best handwriting to rewrite them.

Today we used pastels, pencils, pens and Seesaw to create our poppy art. We talked about what Remembrance is and why it is important before watching the poppies Remembrance animation on CBeebies.

This week Reception have been having a spooky time in class!
We listened to the story Room on the Broom, had fun retelling it at the story table, made repeating patterns on a witches hat, and also using spooky objects, painted pumpkins and spiders and wrote CVC words from the story too.
Ouside the children carved pumpkins and made spooky potions.

This half term, Year 2 are learning about Remembrance. Before, remembrance day we are creating poppy art from observational drawings. We followed a video and different pictures to draw our own poppy then we carefully painted them the correct colours. When they are dry we will cut them out and stick them onto a black and white picture of Blackpool during the war.
Year 6 - Sketching and Water Colour

In preparation for our Poppy Art next week, we practised drawing, sketching and shading techniques using a variety of pencils. We also experimented with water colours.

Today we started our Storytelling through Drawing pathway. We research by ourselves using our digital literacy skills on the laptops about two illustrators called Laura Carlin and Shaun Tan. We then used all the research we found to make visual notes about one of the artists in our sketchbook.
Nursery Unicorns, Sharing and other Bits and Bobs

We always have a wide variety of activities in nursery to meet the needs of all our children. This week to suppport physical developemnt we have been threading beads on to unicorns and exploring their creative side by painting and creating unicorns, We've also been developing relationships through lots iof turn taking opportunites and working collabratively.
School Council-'s First Meeting- Elmer's Big Parade

The School Council met today for the first time since the elections took place.
They were joined by a special guest, Miss Moyes, who was there to launch Elmer's Big Parade- the School Council's first big fund raising event.
Elmer's Parade is part of the Learning Programme where each school, nursery, college or community group will adopt an Elmer for £99 and pledge to raise a minimum of £850 for Brian House Children’s Hospice. They will receive a blank Mini Elmer sculpture to decorate and there will be a Learning Programme resource pack linked to the curriculum to help teachers stimulate young minds.
These mini Elmer sculptures will accompany our full-sized Elmers on display on the trail, allowing the children and young people, and their families, the chance to see them all and admire their great work. At the end of the trail, the Mini Elmers will be returned to their creators as a permanent legacy and celebration of their involvement.
The Mini Elmers will complement and add value to the main art trail, showcasing the creativity of schools and organisations in our community.
The school council were tasked with collating ideas from their classes as to how Boundary can begin to raise £850 for Brian House. They will meet again next half term with their ideas.

Nursery have throughly enjoyed reading the story "We're Going on a Bear Hunt". They have learnt the pattern of the story and are great at retelling it using a story map or just by themselves. We added instruments to make the sounds of swishy swashy grass and squelchly sqerchy mud! The chidlren loved going on a mini bear hunt outside and making theiir own story mats.

Today in Art we explored using our whole body to create spiral drawings. We used chalk, pens, pastels and pencils to create spiral drawings – first outside with large-scale drawings and then in our sketchbooks. We also practised making spirals to music; talking about how the music made us feel and how we could use this to create spirals that reflect our emotions and mood. We created quiet spirals and LOUD spirals!

Today, pupils began to create their final piece of artwork for our typography and maps journey. As you can see, pupils are creating a 3D map of an island, which has been inspired by Michael Morpurgo's book, Kensuke's Kingdom. Pupils are using their typography skills to create words and lettering to make the map look aesteically pleasing.

Starrting somewhere new can be a little bit scary so to help the children settle in we have read "Owl Babies" about some baby owls that are worried their mummy won't come back - but of course she does! The story is great for supporintg PSED skills and taking about emotions.
