Year 5 - Music in our Community

Date: 18th Mar 2024 @ 9:27am

This half-term, Year 5 have been working to answer the question 'How Does Music Teach Us About Our Community?'. We have discussed heroes in our community; from our parents and carers to people who volunteer to help the homeless - we agreed that they were all heroes in their own right.

In what was one of our favourite lessons we listened to and appraised the Star Wars theme composed by John Williams - and with our keen musical ears we suggested, researched and discovered that he had composed some of the scores for our favourite films including Home Alone and Indiana Jones!

Discussions have raised how much music can affect our emotions and attitudes and how much a piece of music can be used to help us think of a particular place, person or event within our community. Our challenge now is to think about a piece of music that could describe Boundary or even Grange Park!

School Council-'s First Meeting- Elmer's Big Parade

Date: 17th Oct 2023 @ 5:00pm

The School Council met today for the first time since the elections took place.

They were joined by a special guest, Miss Moyes, who was there to launch Elmer's Big Parade- the School Council's first big fund raising event.

Elmer's Parade is part of the Learning Programme  where each school, nursery, college or community group will adopt an Elmer for £99 and pledge to raise a minimum of £850 for Brian House Children’s Hospice. They will receive a blank Mini Elmer sculpture to decorate and there will be a Learning Programme resource pack linked to the curriculum to help teachers stimulate young minds.

These mini Elmer sculptures will accompany our full-sized Elmers on display on the trail, allowing the children and young people, and their families, the chance to see them all and admire their great work. At the end of the trail, the Mini Elmers will be returned to their creators as a permanent legacy and celebration of their involvement.

The Mini Elmers will complement and add value to the main art trail, showcasing the creativity of schools and organisations in our community.

The school council were tasked with collating ideas from their classes as to how Boundary can begin to raise £850 for Brian House. They will meet again next half term with their ideas.

Blackpool Zoo Orienteering

Date: 17th Oct 2023 @ 12:48pm

We were invited to take part in two fun festivals within Blackpool Zoo where each school will be given a map of the park to help them to solve the clues to find the right animals.

The children, chosen from Year 5, had a great morning with Mrs. Millar and Mr. Parsons supported by Leaders from Blackpool Sixth Form. Efficient map reading and a keen sense of time meant that we returned to the finish before the other schools – leaving us enough time to visit some of the animals not on our list (and the dinosaurs too!).

Reception- A visit from SMJ Falconry

Date: 10th Oct 2023 @ 10:42pm

The children in Reception had a very exciting visit today- they met four owls! The children went to meet their feathered friends in the dance studio and waited patiently for their handler to take them out of their boxes. They met Tike, Casper, Bugs and Twiglet.  The owls were all very different.  Tike was a burrowing owl who lives underground.  Casper has huge brown eyes which can see for miles.    The children enjoyed learning about the different owls.  They found out what they like to eat and how they use their senses to catch their prey. We enjoyed watching the flying demonstrations and were amazed at how silent their wings were when they flew.   We were lucky enough to hold Twiglet- the youngest of all the owls. His feathers look just like the bark of a tree so he can camouflage himself from predators.  He had sharp talons to help him catch his food too. What a fantastic experience for all the children.
