Heritage Day

Heritage Day 2025
This week we have focused on Blackpool's heritage. Read on to find out about all of the exciting learning that has taken place this week.

EYFS - Went to the beach and explored what seaside towns are like. They built sandcastles and looked at natural objects. In school next week, they are going to continue their learning by comparing seaside towns from the past and present.

Year 1 - Have been learning about Blackpool Tower Circus past and present. They have worked together to create timelines and to sort different sources into past and present using what they have learnt.

Year 2 - Went on a trip to Showtown in Blackpool Town Centre. They learnt all about how the seaside has changed throughout the years. They explored the seaside using their senses and thought about what they would hear, see, taste, smell and feel. They also looked at how Blackpool developed throughout the years and how summer clothing changed. Finally, they got to explore the museum, learning all about the fantastic things in our seaside town. When they returned to school, they learnt about Blackpool Rock and how it is made. They tasted lots of different flavours, including fish and chips flavour! EW! They then went on to design their own stick of Blackpool Rock and they learnt to sing the song 'My little stick of Blackpool Rock'

Year 3 - Ahead of Heritage Week, Year 3 went to Hangar 42 in Blackpool. They learnt so much about Blackpool during the Second World War and how the RAF operated during the war. They had sessions on code breaking, evacuees and women at war. The children really enjoyed looking at the different aircrafts and learning how they operated.

Year 4 - Spent a great morning at Showtown museum in Blackpool. They were first greeted by Snappy, a 1950s photographer who showed them lots of pictures she took back then. Then they split off into four groups to explore the museum and learn more about Blackpool Tower and its construction. Back in school they did a double page spread on everything they learned about how Blackpool became a popular seaside resort.

Year 5 - Explored the proud sporting history of Blackpool FC, with a special focus on their remarkable achievements in 2010. The class learned about the club’s journey to the Premier League and what it meant for the local community. To bring their learning to life, pupils were challenged to create either a website or presentation to showcase what they had discovered. The creativity and enthusiasm shown in their work was truly impressive and reflected a great understanding of Blackpool's football heritage.

Year 6 - Have been looking at how Basil Newby influenced the LGBTQ+ community here in Blackpool. They researched who he is and where his career started. They looked through Gazette stories about him and learned about the history of Funny Girls.
