Music Makers - Music so far in Summer 2
Music, Summer 2 so far…
In Reception we have been looking at a range of percussion instruments. We have been learning the names of instruments and exploring how to play them. We have been listening to a song about the summer holidays and dancing along to it using different movements.
In Year 1 we have began to investigate the question “How does music teach about us about looking after our planet?” We have learnt to sing the song “The Bear Went Over The Mountain.” We have clapped the rhythm to short phrases and then used these to improvise a tune on the glockenspiels using C, D and E.
Year 2 have also been exploring the question ‘How does music teach us about looking after our planet?’ During our first lesson, we appraised, learnt to sing and play the glockenspiels in time to ‘The Sunshine Song’.
Year 3 have been working on our listening and appraising skills as well as demonstrating how we can improvise on a glockenspiel. When listening and appraising we have thought about the texture, tempo and musical style of different songs and listened out for which instruments we could hear.
In Year 4 this half term our music journey is based around purpose, identity and expression. We are exploring the question “How does music connect us with the environment?’ We will be listening to different pieces of music and discussing how it makes us feel. Our first song was ‘You Can See it Through.’ We explored its musical style through the style indicators of Electronic Dance Music.
In Year 5, we ask ‘How Does Music Connect Us with the Environment?’ as an entry point for the broad Social Theme of ‘Music Is a Nature Lover and Guardian of the Earth’. We will look at how this links to other subjects and learning in school such as nature, environment, animals, Geography, Science, Art, Forest School, climate change etc. We began our first lesson by listening to the song ‘You and Me’ and decided that this was Pop music. We discussed similar songs and artists from this genre and why we like or disliked this piece. We then began looking at the structure of the song ‘You and Me’ and began learning the chorus.
In Year 6 we began our new music journey by recapping musical terminology so that we could correctly use it to listen and appraise the song 'Heal the Earth.’ The song was in the style of Reggae and was about how climate change is affecting our planet more than ever before. The lyrics explained how we can work together to solve some of these issues.
