Reading into Writing Round Up...

Reading into Writing Update...
Year 1 have read the story 'How to Catch a Star.' They have created story maps to retell key events, written captions and sentences and designed their own 'star trap' that they would use to catch a star.
Year 2 are going to be writing a twisted fairytale. So far, they have enjoyed exploring different twisted fairytales exploring how they are twisted from the original as well as some of the key features including characters, settings, adjectives and adverbs to inspire us for our own twist on a classic fairytale.
Year 3’s genre this half term is non-chronological reports. They have looked at different non-chronological reports and explored what was similar about them. From that, they determined what the common features were and cut them from the texts and added them onto our features chart. They then looked at how to use subheadings in non-chronological reports. The children looked at putting a text back together by matching the paragraphs to the correct subheading.
Year 4 have been working on their narrative writing skills. They have watched the animation, the 'Paperman' and have practised writing expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials and direct speech. These skills have helped them improve a WABOLL (What A Bad One Looks Like) and will support them when they plan and write their own version of the narrative.
Year 5 started their new journey by looking at the narrative poem 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes. They have built on their oracy skills by performing the poem out loud. By the end of unit they will have written their own narrative based on the poem.
Year 6 are on their last writing journey of the year, which is a narrative that uses speech to advance the action. One group has used the short video 'Alma' as their stimulus and the other has used the Pixar film 'For the Birds'. Both groups have written some excellent examples of speech to move the story forward.
