As part of Black History Month, Year 1 have read the story 'Handa's Surprise'. We have sequenced the key parts of the story, made lists of the fruits taken from the animals and looked at using adjectives to describe Handa.
Year 3 have explored explanation texts and diary extracts. After reading a range of WAGOLLS , we wrote an explanation text teaching people how to be 'always' children. We are linking our dairy to our learning surrounding Black History Month and will be writing from the perspective of Ruby Bridges.
In Reading into Writing, Year 4 have been working towards writing fantasy setting descriptions. We have had a large focus on figurative language. We have highlighted similes, personification, metaphors, onomatopoeia and alliteration in a range of fantasy descriptions and then used this to create our own.
This term the pupils in Year 5 have been learning to write a biography. We read biographies of several famous people and identified the structure and language features. The children then researched British Astronaut, Tim Peake, before planning and writing a biography about him. To support Black History Month, pupils used what they had learned to write a biography about a famous black musician. They researched the musician's family background and their music career, before planning, drafting, collaboratively editing and then publishing their writing.
In Year 6 we have been exploring and writing explanatory texts, autobiographies and news articles. As part of Black History Month we were introduced to Harriet Tubman - a slave who escaped to freedom in the USA in the mid 1800s and who went on to help other black slaves escape. We then wrote autobiographies as if we were Harriet Tubman, using everything we had learned about her.
