This week Reception have been learning all about Antarctica, what the climate is like there and finding out about different animals that live there. We have been looking at world maps and globes and identified that the top and bottoms parts of the globe have the coldest climate and in the middle is where it is warmer because of the equator. During class discussions, exploring globes and atlases, playing with small world figures and reading different information books we found out lots of interesting facts and learnt lots of new words including; continent, climate, north and south pole, temperatire, globe, equator, blubber and carnivore. We produced our own child initiated writing about the different animals used the globes to locate different places, looked at how he animals had adapted to their environment and created out own narratives.

We then learnt the words to the song and practiced as a class to perform it as well as learning to play notes E, C and D in time to the song. Each week, alongside discussing the song, singing and playing the Glockenspiel we play games to find the beat and clap rhythmsOver the next few weeks, we will continue to look at more songs and further discuss how music makes the world a better place.

So far during Spring 1, Year 5 have been looking at different aspects of finance.
First, we looked at what 'affording' things mean. To do this, we dicussed the difference between wanting and needing things, as well as being able to prioritise those in order of necessity. We had a really good conversation about this and then put our skills to the test... going to an imaginary toy shop and only having a certain amount of money. We then got into a discussion about lending and borrowing money off our friends and the bank.
This week, we looked at what a payslip is and what the information on it means. We then discussed important terms such as gross pay, national insurance and the different types of taxes. Once we knew the difference between council tax and income tax, we went through different services in our community and discussed where the money comes from to fund these.

We were visited by our School Crossing Officier Zoe who gave us some top safety tips.
Always stop, look and listen
Find a safe place to cross e.g. a pedestrian crossing or a Zebra crossing

Each child became a character who had been blamed for the escape of the village ox. They were immediately sent into exile and walked for miles to a nearby forest. As they were walking, they came across a camp of Vikings who were planning to burn down their village. They had to warn their neighbours whilst worrying that they would never see their family again.
During this experience, we learnt about:
- How the Anglo-Saxons relied on the land to survive
- The structure of Anglo-Saxon society
- The role of King Alfred in the conflict between Anglo-Saxons and Vikings
