Nursery Find a Pea on the Loose!

Date: 26th Feb 2023 @ 5:15pm

We had to be very careful in Nursery this week as there was an evil pea on the loose! We read the story "Supertato" and discovered that the peas had escaped from the nursery freezer! Luckily we managed to find them all with the help of the Wanted posters the children created. Then we discovered peas trapped in jelly and the children had to use their fine motor muscles to try and pull them out using tweezers. We explored lots of different vegetables and create some really delicious looking vegetable soup. The children even made their own evil pea and supertato using materials to create collages. Now we have to keep checking to make sure there are no more esca-peas!

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

Date: 8th Dec 2022 @ 12:14pm

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

In Year 1 we read the story 'The Jolly Christmas Postman.' We began by sequencing the key events, discussing the characters and the meaning of key words. We then moved onto reading letters from different characters, matching the correct letter to the correct address and piecing together a mixed up letter. On 1st December our class elves arrived and brought a letter with them for us to read, but some bits were missing! We then used what we had learnt about letters to fill in the missing features. We will be writing our own letters this week.

In Year 2, we are in the process of writing our own Christmas story inspired by the 2019 John Lewis advert featuring Edgar the dragon. Throughout the journey, we have read a range of Christmas stories and watched a selection of different Christmas adverts to explore how they tell a story through videos. We have now planned out our story and are looking forward to writing them up.

In Year Three we have been exploring shape poems surrounding the theme of Christmas. We have focused on using alliteration, similes and metaphors to create an imaginative description.

In Year 4, we have been working on our play script journey. To begin with, we read a variety of play scripts to identify their features. We then went on to do some drama and act out some of the scenes that we read. We are going to be basing our final pieces on the Boudicca Revolt which is what we learnt about last half term.

In Year 5 we have been learning about stories from other cultures. We read and analysed stories from the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and then created a list of features particular to that type of story. 'The Dreamtime' is the Aboriginal people's creation stories, they usually explain how the world came to be, and how animals were created. We planned, drafted and edited our own Dreamtime story, before publishing our final piece of writing. After writing our final version, we peer-assessed our texts by discussing what we had written with a partner.

In Year 6 we have spent time exploring, planning and writing crime stories. We looked at several full stories at the start of the journey and began pulling out features of crime stories. Then we worked together to generate as much vocabulary as possible relating to the genre so that we would have a bank of high quality words to choose from when we wrote our own stories. We had fun writing our stories and typing them up at the end as a finished piece.

Year 6 Poetry Workshop with Nathan Parker

Date: 6th Dec 2022 @ 4:56pm

The children then took part in several short activities that got them to think about emotions and rhyming words. By the end of the session, the children created a whole class poem around pets - we all had a great time with Nathan and we hope to work with him again.

Nusery Whatever Next!

We have been reading the story "Whatever Next!" By Jill Murphy. In the story a little bear makes a rocket out of a cardboard box and flies to the moon! We have had some super spaced themed activities including making space ships out of shapes and throwing the right number of space rocks in to a box. A favourite was making a giant planet by splatttering paint - great for working those big muscles. The chiildren also did some great mark making describing their trip to the moon.

Year 1 The Jolly Christmas Postman!

Date: 25th Nov 2022 @ 7:18pm

After reading our new text we received a letter from ‘The Jolly Postman!’

We used our phonics knowledge to decode the letter and to find out what he had to say! We also identified the address, the date, who the letter is to and who the letter is from. Over the next few days we will be reading a range of different letters, highlighting the key features and further developing our understanding of the purpose of letters.

Date: 24th Nov 2022 @ 11:28am

It's been pants crazy in nursery this week! We have been reading the story "Aliens Love Dinopants" all about aliens and dinosaurs who share a love of underpants! The children have been busy designing their own underpants and creating their own aliens. They really enjoyed blowing paint with a straw and adding eyes to make an alien! They have been counitng aliens, matching pants with the same pattern and feeding aliens at the funky fingers table! One day we even discovered some alien eggs. We waited patiently until they were ready and then we help the baby aliens hatch from the eggs!

Reception There's No Such Thing As The Gruffalo

Date: 21st Nov 2022 @ 7:44pm

Reception have been reading the story 'The Gruffalo' by Julia Donaldson this week.  To help develop our language and oracy the children have been using the puppets at the storytelling table to retell the story in their own words.  The children used some fabulous words to describe the Gruffalo including 'scary' 'terrifying' 'enormous' 'fierce'.  The children have also been enjoying role playing in our Gruffalo Cafe making some delicious food for the woodland creatures.  To consolidate the children's learning they have been making lists of the Gruffalo's favourite food, labelling the characters from the story, painting pictures of the Gruffalo, making different length snakes and making models of the Gruffalo using recycled material.

Have a look at some of our wonderful work.

The children developed their fine motor skills by hammering witches fingers in the a pumpkin and practised counting by sticking legs on to a spider. It's been a very creepy week!

Year 1 Levers and Sliders

Date: 31st Oct 2022 @ 6:22pm

Today, we began the start of our new half term by enjoying a DT day!

Firstly, we looked at existing products to explore the different mechanisms and moving parts in a range of picture books. We talked about how the moving part moves, how it works and what effect it has.

We then began to make two prototypes, a lever and a slider. We linked each mechanism to a story to create a moving picture for each. We all talked through the safety points and watched our teachers make an example, reading through the instructions together and spotting where they went wrong! We then each had a turn to follow the instructions, read them carefully and make our two prototypes.

We verbally evaluated our desgins, talking about what had gone well and what we could improve next time.

Nursery Go On A Bear Hunt

Date: 19th Oct 2022 @ 2:51pm

Nursery have been reading the story "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" By Michael Rosen and have been having such a good time! The story has a repetitive text which is great for encouraging children to join in with stories. From the story we have had so many wonderful experiences including adding music to the story, making binoculars, making bears and making some delicious biscuits. To finish of the week we even went on our very own Bear Hunt and found the bear hiding in the woods with a delicious treat for us.

If you would like to share the story with your child here is a link to the author reading the story
