Exploring Materials in Year 1: A Hands-On Science Adventure!
This half term, Year 1 has been diving into the fascinating world of materials. We've been learning about what everyday objects are made from and exploring their different properties. It’s been an exciting journey of discovery, and the children have been becoming real little scientists!
Finding the Best Material for an Umbrella
This week, Year 1 took on a fun challenge—helping Ted find the best material for an umbrella! To do this, we carried out a fair test to compare how well different materials protect us from water. The materials we tested were cling film, tin foil, cloth, and paper towel.
Hands-On Learning
The children were eager to investigate the properties of these materials. They got the chance to observe them up close and experiment with how each material reacted when exposed to water. This linked perfectly with last week's lesson on identifying waterproof and absorbent materials.
The students were amazed at how cling film and tin foil kept water off, while the cloth absorbed it and the paper towel did a great job of soaking it up. Everyone was full of ideas about how these materials could be used in the real world!
Budding Scientists in the Making!
It was wonderful to see how engaged and curious the children were. With their keen observations and scientific thinking, we definitely have some budding scientists in the making! We can’t wait to continue our investigations into materials and see what other discoveries Year 1 will make.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates from Year 1’s science adventures!
