Year 4 - Les pieces de la maison
Date: 3rd Mar 2026 @ 8:50am
This week in French, Year 4 pupils have been building their confidence with key phonics and learning new vocabulary linked to les pièces de la maison (rooms of the house). We explored several important French phonics patterns, including e/eau, silent letters such as s and t, and the elision of je to j’. Pupils also practised vowel sounds and the phonemes ch, ou, on, oi, in, ique, and ille, helping them develop more accurate pronunciation and intonation.
Using the Language Angels programme, the class learned five new nouns for rooms in a house, along with their determiners. This supported their understanding that all French nouns have a gender, which affects the articles used. Pupils practised listening carefully to spoken French and used these new sounds in their own speaking and reading.
During our listening activity, all pupils worked hard to identify the correct room names, with additional adult support provided for those who needed it. Pupils then took part in a paired speaking task, where they asked and answered questions using the new vocabulary.
