Year 6 - Fire Service Visit
Date: 12th Oct 2026 @ 10:59am
🚒 Fire Service Visit
Today, the Fire and Rescue Service came to visit Year 6. The firefighters began by recapping some important fire safety messages that they first shared with us when we were in Year 2. It was great to revisit this information and remind ourselves of how to stay safe at home and what to do in an emergency.
🚦 Road Safety Focus
The main theme of today's visit was road safety. As we become more independent and start travelling to and from places without adults, it is more important than ever that we make sensible choices when near roads.
The firefighters talked to us about:
- 🚶 Waiting safely at the kerb before crossing.
- 👀 Looking and listening carefully for traffic.
- 💡 Wearing bright or reflective clothing so that drivers can see us more easily, especially now that the evenings are getting darker.
- 📱 Avoiding the use of mobile phones when walking near roads.
- 🎧 Not wearing headphones, as they can prevent us from hearing approaching vehicles and other hazards.
👨🚒 Careers in the Fire Service
As well as teaching us about safety, the firefighters also spoke to us about careers within the Fire and Rescue Service. We learned that firefighting involves much more than responding to emergencies. There are many different roles available, including firefighters, control room operators, community safety officers and specialist rescue teams. The visitors explained the skills and qualities needed for these careers, such as teamwork, communication, resilience and a commitment to helping others.
❓ Questions and Learning
The children asked some excellent questions and were very engaged throughout the session. It was a valuable opportunity to learn how to keep ourselves safe while also discovering more about the important work carried out by the Fire and Rescue Service.
👏 A huge thank you to the firefighters for taking the time to visit us and share their knowledge and experiences. 🚒✨
