Reception: Blog items

This week we are going to starting our topic 'All about me'. We started by thinking about what we look like and how we are similar or different to others. The children enjoyed using mirrors to look at the different features on their faces and made some thoughtful observations.

Reception learning to write their names

Over the course of this half term we are going to be focusing on ensuring that the children can recognise and write their own name, whilst holding their pencils correctly. Today the children made a great start by using their name cards to copy their names out with Miss Sharples and Miss Crystal. Some children were even able to recognise some of the letters in their name. Lots of opportunities at home to practice recognising and writing their name will help the children immensely.

Today our new Reception children have stayed for dinner for the first time. They lined up smartly in the classroom and walked down the corridor to the dinner hall. We were very impressed with how they politely asked for their dinner remembering to say please and thankyou. The children were able to choose three items from the salad bar. The children sat at the tables brilliantly and enjoyed their dinner whilst chatting to their new friends. What a super start!

This week we have been focusing on the children learning the classroom rules and routines. We have been busy learning how to sit on the carpet properly, sharing the classroom resources and putting them away correctly and practicing putting on our waterproofs independently ready to go outside. Welcome to all the new children who have joined Boundary Primary in Reception. We have had a great first week together. We have been busy getting to know our new teachers, exploring the classroom environments both indoors and outdoors and making new friends. It has been lovely to see the children looking super smart in their new school uniforms. If you haven't already please can you ensure your child has their own school book bag, ready for recieving their reading books and a full PE kit in school, named and in a seperate bag. Thank you for your support. What a super start to the school year!

Reception were very excited when the home corner changed into an ice- cream shop!
Someone made the ice-creams, someone was on the till, the customers chose what they wanted by completing a form with the different flavours and styles of ice- cream and you could design your own ice-cream and ice lolly too. They took turns, helped each other and chatted about their favourite ice- lolly and ice-cream.
Then, when we returned from a day at the beach, Mrs McAllister opened up her own ice-cream shop outside, where children could enjoy a real ice-cream as a treat!

As part of Hertitage Week the children in Reception enjoyed a fantastiv trip to St Anne Beach. As part of our trip we learnt about the seaside and the different features of a coastal town. We also enjoyed hunting for shells and pebbles, building sandcastles with our freinds and even had a picnic on the sand. When we returned to school we all enjoyed an icecream. To further develop our learning we identified a range of different vocabularly and talked about why people might visit Blackpool.

We then watched a promotional video followed by drawing our favourite tourist attractions. We even wrote about why it was our favourite.
Following on from this we compared how seaside holidays and visits had changed over time using our key words 'past' and present' We looked at a range of photographs and discuss why we thought they were in the past or the present. the children then worked together to sort them.

It was Sports Day this week and, although it was a little chilly to start off, we had a fantastic time and showed lots of great teamwork and resilience.

"The Egg and spoon race was tricky but I kept going until the end" Harry.
"I did twenty two jumps (on the speed bounce)" Lucas.
"I jumped really far up to number 4!" Riley.
"The cup stacking was fun- they kept falling down so it was tricky!" Antoni.
"I loved running fast in the running race" Harley.
"I threw the beanbag into the hoop!" Chloe.

This week the children in Reception enjoyed a trip to the beach as part of 'Heritage Week'. The children had a fabulous time finding out about the different features of a coastal town as well as exploring the beach. We built sandcastles, collected different shells and pebbles and even enjoyed a picnic. When we returned to school, we cooled down in our outdoor area and everyone enjoyed an ice cream. What a fabulous day!
Reception- Sports Week Gymnastics

This week Reception have enjoyed taking part in Sports Week.
They had an exciting time doing gymnastics with Mr Rartcliffe where they were able to climb, jump, balance, swing and roll using the large equipment in the hall.
They followed the rules, showed resilience, respect and teamwork as they negotiated their way around the hall using the different types of equipment.
They learnt about why they need to keep themselves fit physicaly, socially and mentally.

Reception Making a healthy snack

This week in Reception we have been learning about how to keep our bodies and minds healthy. As part of our learning we have been identifying a range of different foods which who be a good healthy snack. We talked about the importance of making healthy choices and why they are important. All of the children designed and made their own healthy snack. We tasted the differetn fruits and talked about which ones where ourfavourites and why.

The children then safety used the equipment to chop amd slice the friut and then put it on their kebab stick. Together we all enjo0yed eating ourfruit kebabs.

Over the past few weeks Recption have enjoyed looking after and caring for our classroom ducklings; Sonny, Donal, Sophia and Mr Duck. From the moment our duck eggs arrived the children enjoyed observing them in the incubator eagerly awaiting them hatching.

Once the ducklings hatched the children have been busy learning about the ducks lifecycle, what they eat and how to care for them. They learnt lots of new vocabary and practiced building different sentences using the new words. The children also enjoys painting and collaging the ducks, writing sentences about them and researching different facts about ducks.The children thoroughly enjoyed holding the ducklings, making sure they had enough food and water and even cleaned out the cage. Reception- The Three Little Pigs

This week Reception have been reading the story The Three Little Pigs. We retold the story, learnt new words and discussed why it is importatnt to work hard like the third little pig and not become lazy like the other two little pigs who quickly made their houses out of straw and sticks. Yesterday, Reception took part in Forest School. They had fun playing games, such as Twit and Whoo (hide and seek),helping each other look for wildlife , including minibeasts, and creating models of nature with playdough.

This week we had a very special delivery in Reception. Some duck eggs arrived on Monday in an incubator. The children were very excited to observe the egg and were lucky enough to watch them hatch. We now have four ducklings; Sonny, Sophia, Mr Duck and Donald. The children have had the opportunity to hold the ducklings, watch them swimming in the water trays and even feed and clean our thei cage with adult support. We look forward to learning more about them and thei lifecycle next week.

This week the children have been enjoying hunting for minibeasts in our outdoor area. They used magnifying glasses and viewing jars to inspect them. looking at their colour, number of legs, if they have antennae and naming them too.

This week we have been reading the story The Bog Bay. It about two little girls who discover a magical pond in Bluebell Wood. Inside the pond they find a 'Bog Baby'- a jelly like creature with ting wings and a spikey tail. The girls take the Bog Baby home to look after and care for it- they even make it a special home in a bucket. However, soon the Bog Baby gets sick and the girls realise (with the help of their mum) that the need to return the Bog Baby to magical pond where it lives.
The children have then crated their own Bog Baby models using clay trying hard to include all his different features- googly eyes, a spikey tail and tiny wings. They had to carefully mould the clay to the correct shape and use the skills; slip, score and blend to ensure they correctly attached all the different features. When the clay had dried they painted their models and made a magical pond for it to live in using a range of different meduims and materials at the creative area.

Reception The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The children ihn Reception have been busy completing lots of work based around the story of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' We have been orally retelling and sequencing the story using a range of scienfic vocabularly, learning about the butterfly lifecycle, writing sentences, painting and collaging caterpillars and butterflies aswell as lots of maths themed activities. We have been completing butterfly doubles aswell as adding and subtracting single digit numbers. Have a look at all our learning!
Reception- Keeping Safe in the Sun.

Over the last few weeks, the weather has become quite warm and sunny- some days it has even been hot!
The children in Reception have been learning about sun safety.
"Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the bright sunshine" Myla- Gray.
"You need to wear a sun hat to stop your head from getting too much sun" Lilah.
"Make sure you wear sun screen. It stops you from getting sunburnt" Hazel.
"Always drink lots of water to stay hydrated" Kevin.

Reception The Lifecycle of a Butterfly

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about the lifecycle of butterfly. We have been observing our classroom caterpillars watchikng the grow and change. The children have made some fantastic observations of what is happening.

We have been watching videos and exploring each stage of the lifecycle in detail. We have learnt lots of new vocabularly and the children have been orally rehearsing their sentences using the correct scientific terms.

Reception have been creating artwork after reading the story The Dot by Peter H Reynolds. This is a story about developing a good growth mindset when being creative. Everyone painted a large dot and drew a face on it and then designed their own pattern on a smaller dot. We painted the dots pink and used pink and red felt tips to draw the features on a face and create our patterns.

Outside the children have been working together in the mud kitchen to create their own narratives through imaginative and real life play. The children worked together the chop and prepare a healthy meal for their family. The developed their oracy skills by discussing together why different foods are healthy or unhealthy.

Reception Jack and the Beanstalk

This week the we have been reading 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. The children have been learning lots of different vocabularly and using that to describe what happens in the lifecycle of a bean. They have also been collaging beanstalks, using playdough to make their own beanstalks, building castle in the construction, completing maths activities and writing sentences about the story. This week we have been reading the fairytale story 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. The children recieved a mysterious letter from Jack. He set the children a challenge to find out what a bean needs to grow tall and strong. Using our discussion guidelines the children discussed what what they though the beans would needs and why they though this. the children demonstrated superb listening skills and took turns speaking. The children then went outside to plant their own magic bean and will spent the next few weeks caring for them.
