Year 5 - Summer with Forest School

Forest school is back and this time its sunny! This week the pupils continued working towards their level 2 awards, completing several different tasks. After a warm-up activity of 'Hide and Seek meets Among Us', pupils were whittling wood to make a small butter knife, hand knitting scarves with brightly coloured wool, and using mushrooms to light the campfire (without cotton wool). Once we had got the camp fire going, we toasted marshmallows to eat as we discussed what we had learned.

Year 5 visit Blackpool Zoo! To further their learning, Year 5 went on an adventure to learn more about the animals and natural habitats of the Zoo. From hearing about the Orangutans (and meeting Cherie who was named after Tony Blair's wife!) to watching feeding time with the elephants, we were all treated to a variety of interesting talks where we were able to learn more about how a range of animals have adapted over time to survive in their environments. It was really exciting to see the Bactrian camels being fed - they don't share with each other very well! Just before lunch we were treated to a sea lion demonstration where their natural ability to balance, swim, jump and dive were all on show - Gloria even demonstrated the importance of recycling our plastic and not throwing it on the floor or in the oceans!

Today, we had two visitors from our local church. Jenny and Matt are both leaders in the church. We identified Christian symbols, talked about shared beliefs and values as well as discussing worship. We carried out a fun activity to explain that the Church is one community and all works together! We enjoyed meeting Jenny and Matt and loved the learning we did together.
Year 6 sketching - introduction to Stephen Wiltshire

Today we began our sketching unit by looking at the life and art of the artist Stephen Wiltshire. We looked at his website and appraised some of his pieces - we discussed how he used line and value to create his pieces. We were very impressed with his city landscapes, many of which were drawn from memory. We are looking forward to completing more work in his style and learning about other artists.

Some of our Year 5 children have worked very hard over the last two days to achieve their level 2 award. They have demonstrated many of our Boundary Characteristics while completing all of their assessments. They learnt about bike maintenance and road safety

This week, the whole school have been remembering our School Promises and why they wear an Always Badge.

It was Science Day last Thursday at Boundary and what a day we had! We focussed on the importance of looking after and reusing our clothes. We carried out an experiment to see which washing detergent would best clean a stained piece of fabric. We stained a t-shirt with black coffee and then tried and tested three different detergents to see which would be the most effective. We discussed how much carbon dioxide is produced throughout the fashion industry and what happens to the clothes and the microplastics they contain when they are thrown away and sent to landfill.

Year 6 had a very busy and productive Science Day. We began by looking at scientific stereotypes and how these could be challenged. We took part in a Primary Futures event, where we were introduced to people who worked in scientific roles within our community. We had a chance to guess which job they did and ask questions about their roles. Although all of their careers were different, they all needed scientific knowledge to do their jobs.
We then moved on to learning about the heart and were given the opportunity to dissect a lamb’s heart. We identified the main parts of the heart, including the aortic valve, atriums and ventricles. We finished the day by focussing on plant-based food. We calculated how many food miles different types of burgers created and then designed our own environmentally friendly version.

Today saw Year 5 take over various roles across School from Class Teachers to Site Supervisors. Year 2 were delighted to have been taught by Miss Norman, Miss McCrae Miss Gabby, Mr Ali and Miss Courtney for the morning. The children were taught about the four different sentence types (Statement, Command, Question and Exclamation) during Reading into Writing and participated in a sorting activity. In Maths, the children practised their 2's, 5's and 10's times tables and completed various questions which revealed a plant at the end if answered correctly. We finished our fun morning with a game of Bingo ran by the new Teachers. The children all did a wonderful job and should be incredibly proud of themselves!

Thursday 7th April 2022 - Takeover Day
Dear Diary,
Today has been Year 5's Takeover Day! We have had so much fun doing the roles of the adults! We have had a go at being Class Teachers, Site Managers, Office Administrators and even the Head and Deputy Head Teachers. We have learned so much about the world of work and it has inspired us to want to become adults who work with young children. This has been a brilliant opportunity to gain an insight into what the adults around us do as their jobs, and we have had so much fun as well.

Today saw the Year 5's take over the school! (supervised of course...). The children who took over Year 4 did an absolutely amazing job! They explained their lessons/activities well and engaged both classes really well! Everyone in Year 4 (staff and children) said that they had had an amazing morning thanks to Year 5. Looks like Mr McCormack and Mr Bamber might be out of a job soon!
Nursery The Day We Got Taken Over!

We had some brand new teachers today when four of the Year 5 pupils were in charge of nursery! It was all part of the whole school Year 5 Take Over Day when the pupils in Year 5 took on jobs across the school. Our new teachers planned some fun Easter activities for us and we really enjoyed our morning with them.
Reception Willow Class visit the zoo

This week the children in Willow class enjoyed a visit to Blackpool Zoo. The children were very excited to put on their waterproof suits and go on the mini bus. We spent the exploring exploring, observing and finding out about all the different animals including lions, tigers, monkeys, giraffes, gorillas, sea lions, penguins and camels. The children enjoyed finding out about the animals different habitats and what they eat. When the children returned to school they prodcued some lovely pieces of writing all about the different animals they saw.
Reception Learning about Easter!

Reception have been learning about Christain celebration of Easter. We listened to the Easter story and talked how Jesus showed courage when he was crucified. The children learnt that throughout his life Jesus show kindness, compassion and empathy to others. Although Jesus was crucified on the cross on Good Friday he cross on Easter Sunday he rose from the dead to be with God in heaven. The children made their own Easter pictures and wrote some

Year 6 visited St Mark’s Church to learn all about Holy Communion/Eucharist. Reverend Peter and Mathew explained the service and the rituals that take place as well as the meaning behind them.
Jenny showed the children around children and they completed a little quiz to further their understanding of Christianity.

Year 6 had a great day learning about the street artist Banksy and created their own Banksy inspired Blackpool street art. First, we learned about Banksy and used our sketch books to explore his work and inspiration. We discussed the meaning behind some of his pieces and whether grafitti is art or vandalism. We then practised using sponges and spray bottles to create a 'spray paint' effect. Finally we used stencils to create our collaborative 'I love Blackpool' street art.

We have had a visit from the Police this week to talk about legal and, mainly, illegal drugs. This involved looking at how drugs are trying to be disguised as sweets, looking at the risks and 'street' names of illegal drugs and discussing peer pressure. Year 6 children were really sensible, listened carefully, participated well and asked some great question.

We are proud to publish the official photographs from Year 5's performance of 'Much Ado About Nothing' at Blackpool's famous Grand Theatre, which was held on Tuesday 15th March 2022.
The children who performed did an outstanding job at performing one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays, and at representing our school!
Don't they look like they should be on a film set in Hollywood?!

In RE, we held our very own Vaisakhi celebration! We learnt the importance and traditions of the celebrations and tried them out for ourselves. We started by discussing the worship and we had a look at a real Chaur Sahib. We then learnt some traditional dances, tried on some clothing and finally tasted some traditional foods. We had a great time celebrating and enjoyed enbracing other cultures and traditions.

This week we visited St Mark's church as part of our RE journey this half term. We spent some fo the afternoon exploring the church and discussing how the different features are used day to day. After that, we learnt about the different parts of the Bible and how the Bible tells us a whole host of different stories. To finish the afternoon, we took some time to reflect on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and we wrote supportive messages and pictures on popst it notes to show our support.

This week we celebrated World Book Day 2022! We had a fantastic day in Year 4 as this was also our Forest School day! We had some great activites in class for World Book Day. We used our new bookmarks (which have a QR Code and log in details to access a whole online library on Oxford Owl) to do some book surfing and choose an online book to read. We talked about the characters that we had come dressed up as and what book they were from. We also played a fantastic quiz, thanks to Mrs Hamilton to nicely round off the day.
