When life gives you lemons.... Make Lemonade!

In our guided reading, we looked at a set of instructions on how to make lemonade. We thought it would be a great idea to follow the recipe and make ur very own lemonade. Unfortunately, we were unable to taste the lemonade but Mrs Fielding had a go at home and she can confirm it is delicious!
The recipe is very simple to follow and it would be great for you to try it out at home and let us know how it tastes. We have uploaded the recipe onto seesaw for you to follow! You could even share pictures of you making it with us.

It has been an explosion of colour in nursery this week! We have been reading "The Colour Monster" a story about a monster who changes colour depending on how he is feeling. When he is happy he turns yellow, if you we could change colour, I think we would all have been yellow this week because we've had so much fun! The children have been making their own monsters and exploring the different colours. They have also been building relationships with each other by sharing and working together when playing outside.

Meet Supertato! This week in Nursery we have read the story ‘Supertato,’ and learnt about the caped potato superhero fighting to save the world from the arch villain – the Evil Pea! We have been practising our Supertato story telling skills with our Superhero story basket, with added special characters made by Mrs Welch! We have also been creating our own evil peas, and exploring our Funky Fingers area using trays of peas and mashers, evil pea threading and potatoes, sticks and capes! We have been mark making with carrots, printing with celery and broccoli and even taking part in a Superhero obstacle course!

Today we joined Reception for Mrs. G Teepee Tales. We firstly looked at the front cover of the book, discussing what we thought the book might be about. We figured out it was about a dinosaur, but not just any dinosaur, a dinosaur that had lost his roar! We all listened very carefully to the story, some of us were even chosen to become characters from the story, and we all joined in with our favourite part, 'ROAAAAAAR.' Some of our children were then lucky enough to be able to buy a book to take home with them.

Year 2 amazed us on World Book Day with their amazing costumes! We shared our favourite characters and books with each other, as well as visiting the library for a special story! We had a lovely day and we would like to thank everyone for the huge amount of effort that went into making sure the children looked fabulous!

What a good day! Children have thoroughly enjoyed World Book Day. From the beginning and discussing our characters, making book marks and drawing character selfies, visiting the library and being given our own book, guessing the stories and listening to stories! We have had a brilliant day!

Today it is World Book Day, and we have had a very exciting day! We started the day by coming in Nursery, but not in our school uniform! We were all dressed as characters from our favourite story. We had characters from 'Peter Rabbit,' 'Funny Bones' and even 'Harry Potter!' During carpet time we all talked about who we were, and why we liked the story our character was from. We then took part in different World Book Day activities, including making a bookmark to keep our place in our favourite story! We finished off each Nursery session with a story before home time. Everyone in Nursery made a fantastic effort for the day, thank you for your support!

What a fantastic day we have had today! We were so excited coming into class this morning. We couldn't wait to see what all our friends were dressed as. Our classes were made up of Marry Poppins, Harry Potters, Gangster Granny, Cat in the Hats, Ron Weasley, Gruffalos, Peter Rabbit, Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood and many more.
We talked about who we had come dressed as, we completed a book review and we also enjoyed re-designing a book front cover for a book that had been read to us with the cover hidden. There were some great designs and a couple even looked like the real thing!
The overarching theme of the day was to share stories .... so we read stories as class, on our own and to our friends. We also enjoyed a visit to the library in our costumes where we all received a book.
It's not all over today, we love reading and we ready every day at school! .... Tomorrow we have Mrs. G Teepee Tales coming in to share more stories with us! The excitement and our love for books never ends!

Wonderful World Book Day Outfits

Is this this best year yet? The children in Year 5 made such an incredible effort with their World Book Day costumes today, all to celebrate the wonderful world of books and highlight the importance of reading. The Queen of Hearts, Harry Potter, Matilda, Gangsta Granny and Willy Wonka were just a few of the famous book characters that made an appearance.

Today we have enjoyed celebrating World Book Day. The children looked fantastic in their costumes and they enjoyed taking part in lots of different activities. The children enjoyed sharing their favourite story books, making books marks and they even visited the library. All children have received a book token to spend on a book of their choice which are available from local super markets.
The Adventures of the Naughty Bus

This week our story has been ‘The Naughty Bus.’ We started the week by reading and discussing the story, talking about our own experiences of where some of us have been on a bus journey! We have been building towns and roads in our construction area, making stop signs at the writing table, and adding a certain number of people onto the bus in our maths area. We have also painted a big box that we have turned into a bus for our role-play area. We all had a great time, taking it in turns to be different parts of the bus, setting up a bus stop, and handing our tickets to the driver when the bus arrived! Firstly, we painted the bus red, found circle shapes for wheels and cut out some rectangular shapes for windows. We’ve been on lots of bus journeys to different places, giving our bus ticket to the driver and him taking us where we wanted to go!

This week we have read and enjoyed the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.’ We started off the week by exploring instruments to represent the sounds in the story, ‘swish, splash, squelch, and stumble trip!’ We have been retelling the story using our instruments and our sensory story tray, exploring trays of mud, water, sticks and snow! We have continued to focus on our counting, number recognition and matching numeral to quantity by finding the missing bears and putting them back in the correct cave! We have also had our own ‘bear cave’ in Nursery, which has been our special mark making space for the week, with bear hunt story telling paper and pencils. We have even made binoculars in our creative area to take on our own bear hunt! We followed the clues that had been left for us to find the bear in his deep dark cave!
The One With The Author - Dan Worsley

Today, we were lucky enough to have Dan Worsley in to help write an opening to a jungle themed story. We looked at a setting description that Dan created himself so we could discuss the figurative language he had used and why; we were able to magpie some of his ideas. Thanks to Dan, we were able to grasp an idea of how to write our own jungle themed setting description and we can't wait to show him what we have achieved this time next week. Keep your eyes peeled for some our work being published on the website soon.

The Story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears

This week we have enjoyed the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears.’ We firstly read and discussed the story, talking about the characters and where the story is set, before getting busy with lots of activities! We have retold the story in our role play area, using different sized spoons, bowls and chairs, whilst also making chairs and beds for different sized bears in our construction area! As usual we have spent lots of time in our outdoors area, finding hidden bears and taking part in a police role-play to investigate Goldilocks! We have investigated with porridge oats, scales and containers to explore capacity and weight, and been exploring shape in the environment! See what shapes you can see whilst you are out and about over the weekend!
Guided Reading Parents Workshop

Year 2 enjoyed having their parents visit this morning to support their reading skills. Parents were given useful tips to help their children develop their reading skills at home such as predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising pieces of texts.The children did a great job showing off their superb reading skills. Remember reading as often as possible will develop your child's reading fluency and overall understanding of texts which is a key aspect of achieving end of year 2 expectations.

Nursery rhymes play an important part in early childhood development and education, as well as being fun they help children develop social, physical and emotional skills. We have particularly concentrated on 5 nursery rhymes this week, focussing on one song each day. We started the week with 'Baa Baa Black Sheep,' where we looked at weighing different bags of objects, talking about which were heavier and lighter. We then moved on to 'Down in the Jungle,' where children looked at ordering animals by size. On Wednesday we sang 'Row, Row, Row your boat,' and made bottle cap sailing boats, talking about how we could get them to go faster! On Thursday we were lucky enough to have some of our adults join us to celebrate World Nursery Rhyme week, and we showed them everything we have been learning, including our rhyme of the day 'Incy Windy Spider.' Today we have looked at 'Two Little Dicky Birds,' making our own birds in the craft area, and using seeds and lard to make bird feeders to hang on the trees outside! We have put them in the fridge to set over the weekend, and will be hanging them out next week and keeping an eye to see it we can spot any birds eating them! Children have been practising these songs as part of their BLT for the past couple of weeks and it has really shown in their work in Nursery, we have had a jam packed, fun filled week!

Our story for the week has been the 'Stick Man.' We read the story together and learnt all about the 'Stick Mans' journey to return to his home. We went for a walk around the school gardens to search for the perfect sticks to make our own 'Stickmen.' We found lots of different natural materials in the garden, including lots of different sizes of sticks! We took them back into Nursery, where we looked sorted them into length order, talking about the longest and shortest sticks. We have made 'Stick Men' at our Play Dough table, using the different tools and resources available to create individual features on our men. At our Maths table we have been practising creating squares, triangles, and rectangles using sticks, and in our water tray we have been looking at floating and sinking! We also created our very own 'Stick Man' sun catchers, have a look at them next time you come into Nursery! Hopefully the sun will be shining through them!

The children and parents were Nature Detectives. Parents learnt ways to support their child's reading. writing and maths with a Nature theme. They learnt how to support learning at home and in school and each family made a scrap book to record their learning. Parents learned more about the KS1 curriculum and went on an educational visit and learnt about how we grow our fruit and vegetables.
They also made a planter out of paper, planted a seed, to grow in the ground.

This week were lucky enough to have a fantastic visit from SMJ Falconry who brought 4 owls; Midge, Molly, Ollie and Spud. We found out lots of interesting facts about the owls and even had the opportunity to hold on wearing a special glove. Back in the classroom we read the story Owl Babies, uses props and puppets to retell the story orally, made owls out of recycled materials, used play dough to make our own owls and built nest out of natural materials. We also drew the owls from the story and labelled them with the initial sound. What a busy week we have had!

Year 2 were excited to see the Book Bus arrive, we looked at a range of different books from many genres and read one together as a class. Children then choose to buy one to take home. Remember reading is very important but it is also very fun when you have the right book. We hope everyone enjoys reading their new books and Miss Ward and Miss Hooson look forward to hearing all about them.

This week Reception enjoyed the visit from the book bus and we all had the opportunity to have a look at the book available. Some of the children were lucky enough to buy their own books. We counted out our coins and paid for the book by ourselves. We can't wait to share our new books with our grown ups when we get home.

We were very excited about the Book Bus coming to school. There were so many books to enjoy and we all managed to find a favourite. Morgan said 'the book bus is huge and has lots of books'. Logan said ' I bought a Toy Story book to read at bed time' and Jacob said 'I've got a Roblox book because I love Roblox'

This week the children have been reading the story 'Rosie's Walk'. The children have enjoyed using the different props at the storytelling table to help them orally retell the story. The children also created their own story maps which included pictures from the story and even some children were beginning to label their work. We also enjoyed painted the different characters from the story, making and collaging our own foxes, practicing the use of prepositions and counting different objects from the story.Have a look at our wonderful learning!
Witches, wizards and a whole lot of magic!

This week we have read the story 'Room on the Broom.' We talked about the different characters that are in the story and the order that they get onto the witches broomstick. We have made wands and broomsticks out of different materials, using sticks and comparing the sizes. We created magic potions and witches bubbling brew, blowing bubbles and exploring what was inside. We even painted with spaghetti broom sticks! The witch has also been very forgetful this week. She wrote us a letter to tell us that she had lost some of her items around Nursery! So we went on a scavenger hunt to find her hat, bow and broomstick! We found everything for her so she could get back on her broom and fly away.

Today Year 6 had their first visit to the library @thegrange. We will be visiting every month so that the children can regularly change their books and be exposed to a variety of authors and genres. The books will stay in class as part of quiet reading time during Guided Reading sessions.
