Acorns & Blossoms - Nurse visit

Acorns and Blossoms had a wonderful visit from Fiona, our school nurse, today! We have been learning about how nurses help to keep us healthy and how, one day, we could become nurses and help others too.
The children had lots of fun caring for their toys and taking part in role-play as nurses and doctors. They especially enjoyed bandaging injuries, applying plasters, and looking after both their friends and the dolls. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that helped bring our learning to life.

Acorns & Blossoms - Core word 'feel'

This week, our core word has been "Feel", as we explored different emotions and talked about how we are feeling. We have been learning the Makaton sign and using visuals to help us understand and communicate our feelings.
The children loved joining in with feelings songs and looking at themselves in the mirror to create different facial expressions, showing emotions such as happy, sad, excited, and surprised. Through a range of fun, multisensory activities, we have been developing our understanding of emotions and how they can change throughout the day.
Throughout the week, we have encouraged the children to recognise and validate their feelings, using our resources to help identify and talk about different emotions. It has been wonderful to see the children engaging with the activities, exploring and developing their emotional awareness.We even made our own colour monsters to demonstrate a mix of feelings.

This week, Acorns enjoyed a very special visit from SMJ Falconry, who brought along four beautiful owls for us to meet - JD, Fluffy, Tike and Midge. The children were fascinated watching them in their flying demonstration and listening to some amazing facts. It was wonderful to see these magnificent birds so close and observe how they move through the air. We were also very lucky to have the opportunity to hold one of the owls.
The children really enjoyed this experience and to support our learning engaged in variety of activities in class. Our class story this week is Owl babies and we loved creating our own owls using different mediums and tools, especially using forks to paint a feather effect!

This term Acorns have been developing their early math skills, exploring shape and number.
We have developed our engagement and understanding through a variety of multi-sensory activities. Some of pupils have engaged with looking and feeling different shapes, matching to visuals and listening to adults modelling their names. Some of our pupils have been learning shape names and some of our pupils have been couniting out shapes to develop their understanding of shape correspondence. We have also been exploring shape patterns and threading.

This week, our core word is 'SEE.' We have been exploring this word through a range of engaging activities, encouraging the children to look closely at the world around them. The children particularly enjoyed going on a walk around our outdoor environment, exploring and discovering different things they could see along the way. We looked for familiar objects, natural features, colours, and interesting sights, supporting the children to notice and respond to their surroundings. Throughout the week, we modelled the word 'SEE' and encouraged the children to communicate what they could see using gesture, sign, symbols, and verbalisation, helping them to share their observations and interests in ways that were meaningful to them while developing their communication and engagement skills.

This week, the children enjoyed exploring The Colour Monster story and learning about different emotions. We focused on using different colours, facial expressions, symbols and visual cues to support understanding. The children then created their own Mixed Colour Monster using a range of different coloured paint.🎨🌈💛

As part of our topic “What Makes Me Me,” Acorns enjoyed a fun and engaging sensory cooking activity!
The children used rice cakes and a colourful selection of different fruits to create their own faces. 🍌🍓🫐🍊
This hands-on activity gave the children the opportunity to explore different textures, colours, smells, tastes and shapes, while developing their creativity and independence. It was wonderful to see each child create a unique face! 😊

Our core words for this week and next week are 'LIKE and DO NOT LIKE'. We have been exploring these in a variety of multisensory ways to support and develop an understanding of meaning and communicating our likes and dislikes. We really enjoyed exploring using our senses and smelling a variety of different things and communicating if we liked or didn't like them, either through gesture, sign, visuals or vocalising.

Acorns have enjoyed creating handprint monsters this week. We all enjoyed applying paint to our hands and printing. Then we choose different facial features to create our print monsters. Look at our creations!

This week in Blossoms, we have been revisiting some of our phonics sounds. The children worked hard to recognise different graphemes and say the correct phonemes.
Using pictures to support our learning, we explored words linked to each sound. The children practised segmenting words into individual sounds and then blending the sounds together to read the whole word.
The visual resources and hands-on activities supported the children.

Acorns & Blossoms - Core Word - WANT

This week’s core word is want. We have been teaching the core word in a variety of multisensory ways to support and develop the children's understanding of I want. This enables our children to develop their communication skills when sharing their wants or needs. We will continue to teach the word want next week.

Acorns loved going out to see the farm today and meeting all the animals. We listened to the farmers and then had the opportunity to visit and stroke the animals. We saw the cows, chickens, a sheepdog, sheep, the donkey and lots of others. We even got to brush the pony!

We have been learning about where different animals live. Some love in hot places like the desert and some are cold like the Arctic. Some places have lots of trees like the rainforest and some places are grasslands. We had fun cutting out different animals and gluing them onto their different habitats. We also used the interactive white board to match animals with different habitats and play minibeasts games to strengthen our fine motor skills. Some of us have also created our own rock minibeast. What a busy week we have had!

Acorns have been exploring the question " What do we do/need when we go to the beach?".
We have had lots of fun exploring this through multi sensory activities, songs and tasks. We have been creative, making shell castles using flour sand, scooping and pouring and matching items we need for the beach or a sunny day in the garden. Have a look at our fun afternoon.
Acorns - core words open & close

Acorns core words for the next two weeks are, open and close. We enjoyed learning the words and their signs and watching what each word meant, before engaging in a group learning session to develop our understanding through play and exploration.

This term Acorns have been learning about all creatures great and small. So far we have been looking at minibeasts. We enjoyed learning about the different minibeasts and looking for them in our outdoor area. In art we created our very own minibeasts habitats.
We are now exploring mega beasts and have begun to collage a variety of larger animals, making choices about the patterned papers to use in our collage.
