Acorns - Easter biscuits

Acorns loved our sensory cooking experience this week. We explored making Easter biscuits. We loved creating a dough and then rolling, squishing, making patterns and cutting out shapes. We then had fun choosing different colour icing and sprinkles to decorate some we made earlier. Have a look at our fun. 

Acorns - Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays from Acorns! We have had lots of fun this week incorporating Easter themed activities into our learning, from maths, arts and crafts and our favourite sensory cooking. We have been busy making Easter egg biscuits and going on an egg hunt. Enjoy your break and we will see you after the half term. 

Acorns - Core words Here & There

For the last two weeks, we have been developing our understanding of the core words, here and there. We have learned to say them, sign them or use visuals to support our understanding. We have practised reading and writing the words and our favourite has been signing them in our songs, especially Old McDonald, which has help us to learn the words in context. 

Acorns - Little Red Riding hood

Acorns have been enjoying the sensory story, Little Red Riding Hood. We have loved howling like a wolf, having big eyes and ears and watching the teeth chomp, chomp, chomp. We have been learning to say familiar words and phrases to finish a sentence or using visuals cards to help. We have been developing our engagement and learning during a small group activity.

Acorns - sensory cooking

Acorns have enjoyed making Easter nests today. We had fun crumbling the shredded wheat, mixing in the chocolate and then scooping into cake cases. It was a great opportunity to develop our understanding of following simple step by step instructions, modelled by an adult and by visuals. 
We then had fun scooping natural yoghurt and mixing it into our left overs. We had so much fun and definitely ate more than we made! 

Acorns - Music

Acorns are developing engagement and focus during our adult led music session. This week we have been exploring tapping to a beat or rhythm. We had lots of fun with the drums and trying to follow an adult instruction, stop and go, and keeping in time to the beat. 

Acorns - science day part 2

Acorns have had their own science investigations this afternoon. 

We have taken part in our biscuit dunking experiment and counted the number of times we dunked the biscuit, in warm water, cold water and icy water, until they broke. 

We explored an exploding volcano. What happens when we add bicarbonate of soda to vinegar? We loved how it became fizzy and bubbled over. 

Finally, we explored floating and sinking. We saw that heavy items sank to the bottom of the water and light items floated. 

All these fun experiments helped us develop our curiosity, engagement and learning experiences alongside others in an adult led activity. 

Acorns - Science Day Part 1

Acorns had a fabulous time watching Spark Curiosity and exploring a variety of activities in the hall for Science day. 
we loved looking at the flashing wands and learning that they only flashed when we touched the metal ends, conducting electricity. They even worked when we held hands passing the current through us all. 
We then had fun creating silly string circles. Following by watching big bubbles being made and having a turn, watching the bubbles rise over us.

Acorns - core words

This term we have been developing our understanding of core words, want, what and who. We have been developing our learning through songs and story's and explicit hands on sessions using the core words in our daily vocabulary and signing. 
This weeks story, The enormous Turnip, has been great to explore "who". Who has been pulling up the turnip?

Acorns - sensory cooking

This week's sensory theme was bread art. We had lots of fun rolling and cutting out Easter shapes. We then explored developing our spreading skills, using a choice of strawberry or apricot jam or cream cheese. We had lots of fun exploring the textures with all our senses. It was a great opportunity for us to communicate our choices too. 

Acorns - Three little pigs

Acorns have enjoyed engaging in our sensory story; the three little pigs, for the last two weeks. Our sensory stories offer the opportunity to develop engagement and learning. Developing speech and language, social skills and imaginative play.

Acorns - world book day

Acorns have enjoyed engaging in a variety of experiences celebrating World Book Day. They all looked fabulous in their outfits and we had lots of dressing up opportunities to engage with throughout the day. 
This afternoon we had sensory cooking and explored making faces, happy and sad, using a variety of different fruit, including kiwi, grapefruit, blackberries, pineapple, peaches and strawberries. We engaged with choice making and making our own interpretations of faces. We enjoyed eating them too and trying new flavours!

Acorns had a fabulous time during our sessory cooking session. We were exploring mixing, storing and pouring using flour milk or water. We had fun and developed our learning and engagement alongside other, building our focus and concentration. We then enjoyed a pancake at snack together. 

Acorns - PE

Acorns have loved having our PE sessions with Blackpool football club. We have been developing our engagement and participation in group activities as well as our ball skills. We have been developing our catching, throwing and kicking, using balloon balls, large balls and moving to smaller tennis balls. Have a look at our progress. 

Acorns - story week

Acorns have enjoyed engaging in a variety of stories this week to celebrate National story week. We love how our stories come alive and engaging with lots of sensory props, especially the water spray! 
This week we listened to Whatever next, Pete the Cat and Space adventure. We also shared lots of different stories one to one. 

Acorns - Daily routines

Acorns are exploring and developing their understanding of daily routines. This week we have been looking at our morning routines. We enjoy learning through songs and rhymes and visuals. We are beginning to show our understanding by independently show a morning routine of with n adult supporting us. 

Acorns - Fine motor skills

Acorns engage in a veiety of activities to develop our fine motor skills in preparation for writing and other activities. This week we have been putting those skills to use, practicing cutting with scissors and developing control over our movements. We had fun exploring a variety of materials to cut and developing our choice making too. 

Acorns - Maths

 We love exploring maths in a variety of ways in Acorns. This week we have had spaces themed activities alongside our space story. We are developed a variety of skills from matching shapes, shadows to images and developing our counting skills. We have also been developing our number formation and mark making skills. Some of us have even been counting backwards from 10 to blast off!

Acorns - mixing colours

This term we have been having lots  of fun exploring colours and mixing colours during expressive arts. We loved using lots of different mediums to explore mixing colours, including paint, play dough and coloured water. We have been developing our curiosity and anticipation as we wait for the colours to change. 

Acorns - Brown Bear

Acorns have been sharing the story of Brown Bear over the last two weeks. We have really enjoyed looking at the different coloured animals that Brown Bear can see.

Together we have been learning colour names and signs and developing our communication skills, by repeating modelled words or finishing the ends of sentences. We have also been developing our engagement and concentration skills. 

Acorns - PE

Acorns had the pleasure of welcoming Blackpool football club coach Paul in to run our PE session this week. We have introduced building our independence, changing into kit, before hand and then developing our engagement and participation during the activities. 

We enjoyed engaging in parachute games and then developing our ball throwing skills and accuracy. 

Acorns - Welcome back

Happy New Year to all our families. Acorns have had a great first week back and settled in well. 

Our topic this term is colour and light. This week we have had fun exploring colours and colour mixing through a variety of multi sensory activities. Take a look!

Acorns - Elf run

Acorns had fun taking part in the Elf run in the dance hall. We enjoyed reindeer racing, elf running and Santa snowballs. It was lots of fun. 

Acorns - Gingerbread decorating

Acorns have had lots of fun decorating gingerbread trees and snowmen. We have been developing our choice making, choosing which item we wanted to decorate. We then made a choice between different coloured icing to decorate. We love using a variety of different opportunities to develop our communication skills and learning.
