Year 2: Blog items

Year 2 Primary Futures

Date: 15th Dec 2022 @ 7:36pm

Today, Year Two took part in a Primary Futures event called 'Who's line is it anyway?'. We met three different people who all had Christmas jobs and we had to guess what their job was from the clues they gave. We met a range of interesting people including: Pia the Christmas decorator, Sarah the theatre director and Shaun the chef at Buckingham Palace. Finally, there was a surprise mystery guest who surprised the children.

Year 2 Christmas Art

Date: 15th Dec 2022 @ 7:30pm

Today, Christmas arrived and we made some Christmas Snowflakes. Once we had glued our sticks together and painting them white, we used our weaving skills learnt through our previous Art journey to wrap white or blue wool around our sticks to create our snowflake. We finished our snowflakes with glitter and sequins.

Year 2 Making Shapes

Date: 8th Dec 2022 @ 2:35pm

Today, in Maths, we practiced making 2D shapes using paper art straws for their sides and playdough for the shapes vertices. Whilst making each shape we had to think about the correct number of sides and vertices each shape had and correctly label them once we had made them. Tomorrow we will use our knowledge to draw them using geoboards.

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

Date: 8th Dec 2022 @ 12:14pm

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

In Year 1 we read the story 'The Jolly Christmas Postman.' We began by sequencing the key events, discussing the characters and the meaning of key words. We then moved onto reading letters from different characters, matching the correct letter to the correct address and piecing together a mixed up letter. On 1st December our class elves arrived and brought a letter with them for us to read, but some bits were missing! We then used what we had learnt about letters to fill in the missing features. We will be writing our own letters this week.

In Year 2, we are in the process of writing our own Christmas story inspired by the 2019 John Lewis advert featuring Edgar the dragon. Throughout the journey, we have read a range of Christmas stories and watched a selection of different Christmas adverts to explore how they tell a story through videos. We have now planned out our story and are looking forward to writing them up.

In Year Three we have been exploring shape poems surrounding the theme of Christmas. We have focused on using alliteration, similes and metaphors to create an imaginative description.

In Year 4, we have been working on our play script journey. To begin with, we read a variety of play scripts to identify their features. We then went on to do some drama and act out some of the scenes that we read. We are going to be basing our final pieces on the Boudicca Revolt which is what we learnt about last half term.

In Year 5 we have been learning about stories from other cultures. We read and analysed stories from the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and then created a list of features particular to that type of story. 'The Dreamtime' is the Aboriginal people's creation stories, they usually explain how the world came to be, and how animals were created. We planned, drafted and edited our own Dreamtime story, before publishing our final piece of writing. After writing our final version, we peer-assessed our texts by discussing what we had written with a partner.

In Year 6 we have spent time exploring, planning and writing crime stories. We looked at several full stories at the start of the journey and began pulling out features of crime stories. Then we worked together to generate as much vocabulary as possible relating to the genre so that we would have a bank of high quality words to choose from when we wrote our own stories. We had fun writing our stories and typing them up at the end as a finished piece.

Year 2 Celebrating Christmas

Date: 5th Dec 2022 @ 4:19pm

Today, Year Two began celebrating Christmas by wearing Christmas jumpers and tucking into a delicious Christmas dinner. We ate whilst listening to Christmas music and enjoyed pulling our crackers to reveal a joke and a toy. It really has begun to put everyone in the Christmas spirit and we are looking forward to the KS1 disco later this week! Well done everyone for your effort raising money for Brian's House!

Year 2 Float or Sink?

Date: 2nd Dec 2022 @ 4:38pm

Today in Science, we continued our materials unit with another experiment. This week we had to find the best material for a boat so we decided we should conduct a float or sink experiment. We tested a range of materials by placing them and dropping them into the water before recording our results. We found that some materials float and others sank.

Year 2 Stick Transformation Project

Date: 2nd Dec 2022 @ 4:37pm

Today, in Art Year 2 continued our Stick transformation project. Inspired by Chris Kenney and our knowledge of soldiers we began sculpting sticks into our very own soldiers. Next week, we will design our soldiers some clothes and dress them appropriately for battle. We had to demonstrate many of the characteristics including perseverance and determination and some of us even showed excellent patience and teamwork.

Year 2 Christingle

Date: 25th Nov 2022 @ 4:01pm

This half term in RE, Year Two have been exploring the Key Question 'Why do Christians say that Jesus is the light of the world?' and after discussing the Christian story and exploring different lights we began exploring Christingle. We learnt that Christingles is a symbol of advent and were taught what each part of a christingle symbolises. The orange represents the world and the red ribbon around the middle represents Christ's blood. There are four cocktail sticks to represent the creation of the four seasons and the sweets on the sticks represent all of God's creations. Last of all, the candle in the middle represents Jesus being the light of the world. The children loved making their Christingles to take home and really understood the meaning behind it.

Year 2 Life in the Trenches

Date: 24th Nov 2022 @ 9:01pm

This week, as part of our History unit 'Remembrance', we continued our learning journey by exploring the key question 'What was it like for a soldier in World War 1?' We began the lesson by learning the key word trench and discussed what one of these was before we split into groups to explore different aspects of life for soldiers in the First World War. We explored how life was in their free time, the trench conditions, food as well as the dangers of being involved with the war by looking at different pictures and interpreting what they were showing us. Once we had explored our given area, we were all very brave and presented our information to our friends so we all had an understanding of all elements of the war.

Year 2's Eggcellent Eggsperiment

Date: 24th Nov 2022 @ 8:56pm

This week, as part of our everyday materials unit we conducted an eggciting experiment to find out which material would protect an egg best. Firstly, we decided how we could test it and discussed to ensure it is a fair test we would have to drop each egg from the same height. After we agreed we would drop it 1 metre and made our predictions of what we thought would happen we let the smashing begin. We tested a range of materials including: felt, newspaper, plastic tub, tin foil, bubble wrap and cotton wool. Some cracked slightly, some completely smashed and others nothing at all happened because the material protected it so well. We all had a smashing afternoon!

Year 2 Using Concrete Resources

Date: 18th Nov 2022 @ 4:28pm

This week in Year Two, we have furthered our addition knowledge by learning to add two, two-digit numbers building on our knowledge of adding a one-digit number to a two-digit number. To help us, we have used concrete resources to exchange ten ones for one ten to make it easier to count and add our tens and ones. The concrete resources have really helped us learn the skill before applying it to pictoral and abstract questions. Next week, we will build on our subtraction knowledge to subtract two, two-digit numbers.

Year 2 Super Scientists

Date: 18th Nov 2022 @ 4:23pm

This half term, Year Two are exploring the use of everyday materials and this week we conducted an experiment to test the strength of paper and cardboard. We also tested whether the amount of layers each material had altered how strong it was. We found that cardboard is much stronger than paper but the more layers you add, the stronger each material became.

Year 2 Composing

Date: 11th Nov 2022 @ 4:04pm

Today in Music, Year 2 focused on their listening and composing skills. We began the lesson by listening to what different instruments sounded like and listened to a variety of songs to try and identify the instruments we could hear, songs included We Will Rock You and Count on Me. Then, we began to compose, playing around with notes to create a sequence to play on the glokenspiels.

Year 2 Remembrance Day

Date: 11th Nov 2022 @ 4:00pm

Today, alongside the whole School, we celebrated Remembrance Day. We begun the morning by going and planting our poppies with a soldiers name on in our School Remembrance Garden before taking part in our remembrance service. We also observed a 2 minute silence at 11am spending the time reflecting on those who lost their lives to give us ours. Well done Year 2, you showed excellent respect.

Year 2 Fire Service Visitors

Date: 10th Nov 2022 @ 4:54pm

Today, Year 2 had a very special visit from 3 firefighters from the Blackpool Fire Station near Stanley Park. The 3 firefighters talked to the children all about fire safety and what to do in the event of being in a fire themselves. Firstly, they showed us all their different equipment that helps keep them safe when they are working before teaching us what to do. We learnt so much including: how to test if the fire is close to a closed door, how to stop smoke leaking into the room we are in and taught us to remember 3 very important words: Get out, Stay out and call 999. They even tasked us to go home, find where our smoke alarms are located and ensure they work. The children loved meeting the firefighters and listened intently.

Year 2 Fundamental Skills

Date: 7th Nov 2022 @ 4:16pm

This half term, Year 2 are lucky to have Mr Williams supporting us in PE. Over the last two weeks, we have been practising our hopping and jumping skills in a circuit of activities including hopscotch, hopping over the stepping stones and skipping. Although, we have found some of these skills difficult- in particular the skipping- the children have worked incredibly hard and have began to see some great progress. Some children who couldn't skip at the start are now beginning to skip steps at a time and getting faster. We are looking forward to the next 5 weeks, kepe up the good work Year 2!

Year 2 Poppy Art

Date: 6th Nov 2022 @ 11:08am

In the lead up to Remembrance Day on 11th November, Year Two have been creating poppies in Art. We glued two sticks together to create the cross and used our weaving skills to weave red wool through a template. This created a cross on the front and a square on the back, when we removed the cardboard template it created the shape of the poppy. It took a lot of perseverance to ensure we followed the number sequence correctly but everyone did very well!

Year 2 Addition and Subtraction

Date: 6th Nov 2022 @ 11:02am

This week, we have began exploring addition and subtraction when you have to cross into another ten. To master the skill, we used concrete resources- Base 10- to practise exchanging ten ones for one ten when adding and exchanging one ten for ten ones when subtracting. To help us to grasp the concept of exchanging through our role play of shop keepers and ensuring you exchange for the same amount. These practical activities really helped us apply our knowledge to more abstract questions.

Year 2 Puppets

Date: 21st Oct 2022 @ 3:37pm

Today, we turned our designs into actual puppets that we could play with. We used our previously practiced skills to thread and knot the needle before beginning a running stitch. To finish them off, we cut different materials including felt, pipe cleaners and buttons to design our animal and add their features. Whilst making the products we had to display a variety of characteristics including: resilience, perseverance and patience.

Year 2 Now Press Play

Date: 20th Oct 2022 @ 7:21am

Yesterday, Year Two enjoyed using the Now Press Play equipment to explore different habitats and the animals that live there especially thinking carefully about how these animals are adapted to survive in their natural habitat. We pretended we were aliens in a spaceship that crash landed on planet Earth and had to find a suitable habitat for the aliens to come and live. Whilst we were unsuccessful finding somewhere for the aliens to live we did manage to explore a variety of habitats which we have been learning about in Science. Firstly, we took a swim in the ocean and had to morph into sharks to survive with gills and fins. Next, we went to an incredibly cold place called Antarctica where we had to grow feathers and huddle together like penguins to keep oursevles warm. Then, we left Antarctica and found a jungle surrounded by tall trees and monkey's who we swung around with for a while before taking a journey to the hot desert where we met a camel. It was here we had to adapt and get a hump to store water and change our feet so they were wide to walk on the hot sand. It was great fun and helped consolidate the learning we have been doing in Science this half term.

Year 2 Zoo Orienteering

Date: 19th Oct 2022 @ 9:17am

Today, nine children from Year two represent Boundary for an orienteering activity at Blackpool Zoo in conjunction with Active Blackpool and the School Games.

The children had an amazing time, finding out information about animals to answer the clues on the activity sheet. They used their reading skills and previously taught knowledge to identify the key information around the Zoo to answer the questions in regards to each animal and used the map and signage around the zoo to locate the animals. We all learnt so many new facts; who knew a giraffe’s neck is 2.4 metres long!

All participants demonstrated persistence, teamwork, and resourcefulness.

Year 2- Rosa Parks

Date: 17th Oct 2022 @ 2:57pm

This month, as part of our School celebration of Black History Month we have been completing our writing journey about Rosa Parks. As part of our GPS lessons we looked at information about Rosa Parks and the influence she had on Black rights by refusing to give up her seat and wrote statements about her life and questions we would have liked to have asked her if she was still alive. We will use our knowledge to write a letter to Rosa thanking her for her hard work and determination.

Year 2's Final Forest School Fun

Date: 17th Oct 2022 @ 2:50pm

This week Forest School enjoyed their final forest school session with Jenna and Michelle. This week, we thought about ways to survive if we got stranded in the cold on a mountain and used the parachute as our shelter thinking about the warmth it provided. We also thought about the 3 things we need for a fire- air, fuel and heat and some of us used the tools to practise lighting a fire so we could toast marshmellows. We have had a wonderful three weeks in forest school and look forward to our final three sessions in the summer.

Year 2: The Tiger who came to tea

Date: 12th Oct 2022 @ 12:29pm

Year Two used the Tiger who came to Tea for their reading into writing journey.  We read the story, and then they used the basis of the text to write their own story about a different animal who came to their house.
We watched the play at The Grand Theatre and the children really enjoyed themselves.

Year 2 Forest School Fun Part 2

Date: 6th Oct 2022 @ 4:02pm

Today, year two continued their forest school fun with their second session of the term. Today we began the lesson, by learning how to tie a simple knot and practised the skill a few times on some rope. We then used our new skills and knowledge to create a friendship bracelet, we all chose a colour to represent ourselves, one to represent our class and a final colour to represent nature. After that, we were tasked with a mission of making a party for all the ugly bugs to attend and got very creative- some even had slides and beds! We are looking forward to our final session next week.
