Year 2- Mastering Number!

Date: 6th Jan 2026 @ 8:25pm

In mastering number we have been looking at how to make doubles, using the number facts we already know. We played a game with a idce, looking at doubling and halving numbers. We also looked at using the rekenrek, to find doubles. We used the sentence stems '5 and a bit' '-- is made up of 5 and --' and 'double 5 and -- is --'.

Year 2- Living or never alive?

Date: 6th Jan 2026 @ 8:21pm

This week in science, we explored and compared the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive. Through partner discussions, we shared our ideas and talked about similarities and differences we have noticed in the world around us. We worked together to sort and arrange pictures, answering our focus question: Is it living, dead, or has it never been alive? We discussed our choices with our partner which allowed us to critical think and reason why we think it is either living, dead or never been alive.

Year 2- Yoga

Date: 6th Jan 2026 @ 8:20pm

This week in PE, we took part in a yoga session linked to the exciting theme “Jumping into the Ocean.” The lesson allowed us to copy and repeat a range of yoga movements inspired by life in the ocean. We carried out poses that linked to creatures such as dolphins, starfish, and sharks, helping us to use our imagination while developing our physical skills. Through yoga, we worked on improving our flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination. We practised holding poses, controlling the movements and focusing on our breathing. These activities support not only physical development but also our mind to feel calm, relaxed and focused.

Year 2- O'clock or half past?

Date: 6th Jan 2026 @ 8:19pm

This week in Maths, we have been learning about telling the time. We focused on reading o’clock and half past times. We explored how the hour hand and minute hand work on an analogue clock. To support our learning, we worked with our partner to practically use clocks to show a range of different times. This helped us talk to check our answers together and discuss any misconceptions.

Year 2- Birch - Art Days!

Date: 16th Dec 2025 @ 2:57pm

Over our two art days, we explored the work of two inspiring artists: Marela Zacarías and Vincent van Gogh. We created artist focus pages to study their unique styles and considered how different areas of art connect to each artist’s approach. We experimented with colour mixing, blending primary colours to create secondary colours, and practiced continuous line drawing. In addition, we enjoyed collage making and expressive painting using acrylics, allowing us to develop a range of creative techniques.

Year 2- Animal life cycles!

Date: 12th Dec 2025 @ 12:49pm

In Science, we have been looking at what an animal needs to survive. We have been thinking about their lifecycles and comparing how different animals and humans live their lives. We thought about their offspring or if the lay eggs. We then made lifecycles for humans, ducks and a butterfly.

Year 2- Mastering Number!

Date: 12th Dec 2025 @ 12:00pm

In Year Two, we have been working on Mastering Number by exploring how numbers are positioned on a number line. We have been thinking carefully about what comes before and after a number and using this to understand patterns. For example, if we start with 10, we have been asking questions like: “How many more do we need to make 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15?” This helps us build a strong understanding of addition and the relationship between numbers.

Year 2- Birch- Christmas Dinner & Christmas Jumper Day!

Date: 8th Dec 2025 @ 8:22am

Year 2 came together to enjoy their Christmas dinner. Everyone was in the festive spirit and had a great time celebrating together. We also enjoyed wearing our Christmas jumpers to celebrate!

Year 2- Finding symmetry!

Date: 4th Dec 2025 @ 9:18am

In maths we learnt about lines of symmetry, focusing on vertical lines of symmetry. We began by looking at a variety of 2D shapes and discussing what symmetry means and that a shape is symmetrical if it can be folded into two matching halves. We then carried out a practical activity where they cut out different shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles. They experimented with folding the shapes to see if they could find a vertical line of symmetry. After folding, the children used pencils and rulers to draw the vertical lines of symmetry clearly on each shape.

Year 2- Does using a tissue when sneezing stop the spread of germs?

Date: 4th Dec 2025 @ 9:17am

In this lesson we completed the fair test that we had planned last lesson. We looked at the question, does using a tissue when sneezing stop the spread of germs. We looked at seeing the results from different measurements and ensured we only changed this to keep the test fair.

Year 2- Using Geoboards!

Date: 4th Dec 2025 @ 9:11am

In this maths lesson we were looking at drawing 2-D shapes. Firstly we recapped our learning on vertices and sides and thought about regular and irregular shapes. The children then used the Geoboards to firstly make different shapes and then used dotted paper to draw the shapes.

Year 2- Super similes !

Date: 4th Dec 2025 @ 9:07am

In today’s Reading into Writing we looked at what a simile was. We started the lesson off by making similes using cards to build our sentences. The children thought carefully about the different qualities and what might it link to.

Year 2 - Managing Distractions!

Date: 1st Dec 2025 @ 7:56am

We began by using our oracy skills to explore what managing distractions means, discussing the difference between internal distractions and external distractions. We also talked about how important it is to recognise anything that might take our attention away from learning. After watching a short video, we used the think, nest, respond strategy to reflect on what we had learned. This helped us understand the many types of distractions we may face and how these can vary depending on our environment. Working in groups, we looked at an image and identified potential distractions within it, explaining why each one might interrupt our focus. To finish the lesson, we shared practical strategies we can use to avoid or manage distractions in the future.

Year 2 Get Busy Making Christingles! ✨

Date: 28th Nov 2025 @ 10:12am

It’s been a wonderfully festive week in Year 2 as the children got hands-on making their very own Christingles! As part of their learning about Jesus and the importance of this time of year for Christians, the class explored what each part of the Christingle represents — and of course, the highlight was adding the candle on top.

The children were fascinated to discover the symbolic meaning behind the candle: how its light reminds Christians of Jesus as the light of the world, shining hope and warmth even in the darkest season. There were lots of “oohs” and “aahs” as the candles were lit (safely!), and even more excitement as everyone proudly held up their finished Christingles.

To bring all their learning together, we held our own special Christingle service, giving the children a chance to pause, reflect, and think about the joy and hope that the coming weeks bring. It was a lovely moment of calm in the midst of the December buzz, and the children took part with such thoughtfulness.
A big well done to Year 2 for their creativity, enthusiasm, and beautiful reflections. It truly feels like the Christmas season has begun! 🎄🕯️

Year 2- Birch Together Time!

Date: 24th Nov 2025 @ 9:52am

This week, Year Two enjoyed a wonderful Together Time session with our parents and carers. It was fantastic to see everyone working side by side, sharing ideas and supporting each other.

Our focus for the morning was adjectives, and we explored all the different ways we can describe characters. The children worked brilliantly—thinking carefully about personality, appearance, and feelings, and choosing exciting vocabulary to bring their characters to life.

A big thank-you to all the grown-ups who joined us. Your enthusiasm made the session extra special!

We used our oracy skills to talk about what it is important to have a balanced diet and what we gain from each food group.

Year 2- Amazing adjectives!

Date: 17th Nov 2025 @ 11:55am

We started off the lesson by using our Oracy skills to explain what we could see in pictures from the First World War.  Then went on to mind-mapping as many adjectives about the trenches and what is was like living in these horrible conditions.  We then used these adjectives to write our own descriptive sentences.

Year 2- Children in Need!

Date: 14th Nov 2025 @ 2:13pm

To fundraise for Children in Need the children in Year Two wore something spotty, stripy or Pudsey themed while bringing in a donation for charity. The children loved seeing each others outfits and listening to how their money will support this amazing charity!

Year 2- Remebrance

Date: 11th Nov 2025 @ 11:43am

This week, our Year 2 students took part in planting poppies as a way to remember and reflect on the soldiers who have given their lives in war. 🌺

Through this simple act, the children learned about the importance of remembrance, showing respect and gratitude for the sacrifices made to protect our freedom. The poppies will grow as a lasting symbol of honour and reflection, reminding us all to pause and remember.

Year 2- Working on our oracy skills!

Date: 10th Nov 2025 @ 5:16pm

In this lesson the children worked on the Social and Emotional strand of Oracy- Working with others. The children thought again about the importance of listening and then focussed on the skills of teamwork. We firstly did group activities in which we had to solve problems. We then used our ABC to discuss debate topics and had to express our opinions while listening to others.

Year 2- Fire Service visit!

Date: 10th Nov 2025 @ 5:13pm

Year Two had an exciting visit from the local Fire Service! The firefighters taught us all about fire safety, including how to stay safe, what to do in an emergency, and when to call 999. They also taught us the importance of 'Stop, Drop and Roll'. Everyone enjoyed learning how firefighters help keep us safe every day!

Year 2- Poppy art!

Date: 10th Nov 2025 @ 7:58am

In Art, Year 2 have been exploring expressive drawing linking it to our Remembrance service. We did observational drawing of poppies thinking about the shapes and shadows we could see.
