We then annotated our flip chart papers using Human and Physical Geography vocabulary such as river, rainforest, city, capital city, rural and urban.

Year 4 - Cloning and combining

Date: 11th May 2023 @ 2:18pm

The children really impressed us this week with their image editing skills. We used a website called pixlr.com to clone (copy and paste) parts of images to change their composition - whether that be add or remove something in the image. Then they had a go at combining images where they used part of another image to copy across to their original.

Year 4 Deforestation on Newsround

Date: 10th May 2023 @ 10:35am

Our Geography unit this half term is about the Amazon Rainforest and River. Today, during milk and snack, when we watched Newsround they reported on deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest and how it is now within the UK supply chain. It was great for the children to see something they are currrently learning on the news and it promoted some brilliant discussions.

Year 4 - A part of history

Date: 5th May 2023 @ 2:04pm

We are a part of history this weekend! Today we celebrated King Charles III's Coronation. We have learned about the history of coronations and what happens during the ceremonies, as well as singing the National Anthem and the Coronation Song. We played some 'Regal Games' including croquette, the king's four corners and the royla court tin can alley. We had a wonderful roya lunch together with sandwiches and cakes - and we wore our crowns which we made yesterday! Then we did some royal quizzes and made a collage of all things royal using King Charles III's silhouette.

Year 4 - Editing photos

Date: 4th May 2023 @ 9:10am

Our unit this half term is all about photo editing. This week, we had to use our rotating and cropping skills from last week, then newly learned colour changing skills to change photos to a given mood.

Year 4 - How is sound made?

Date: 27th Apr 2023 @ 2:52pm

Today, we learned how sound is made. We started the lesson by closing our eyes and listening for a sound to be made. We then pointed in the direction of the sound. Next, we discussed that we hear sound through our ears. So how does it get there? Using a tuning fork, we hit it against the table and dipped it in some water. Straight away we could feel tuning fork vibrating in our hands and see the tuning fork vibrating in the water. Using the scientific vocabulary on the board we discussed what was going on. Then we made string telephones. We predicted that we would be able to hear our partner because the vibrations would travel as sound waves down the string. We then used rice on a drum and beat the drum to further see and show vibrations from a sound source (this time the beater).

Year 4 - Getting ready to race

Date: 26th Apr 2023 @ 1:31pm

Last week, we learned how to position our bodies for a race start ('ready' and 'set'). This week, we used those skills in relay races. We also learned how to pass the baton to our teammates from the front and from behind.

Year 4 - Perfect community

Date: 26th Apr 2023 @ 1:28pm

This week, we discussed what a community is. We discovered that a community can be a small group and a large group or area. Then, we made our perfect community and had to reason why we included what we did.

Year 4 - King Charles III's Coronation Song

Date: 18th Apr 2023 @ 3:43pm

Today we started to learn the song for King Charles III's Coronation Day in May. We listened and appraised it using our brilliant musical vocabulary and then we started to have a go at singing it.

Year 4 - Folktales

Date: 18th Apr 2023 @ 3:40pm

We have started this half term by reading lots of examples of folktales. We found the features of a folktale, which we made a list of and then today we reread the folktales we read yesterday and highlighted them. We can't wait to get our creative juices flowing when we write our own.

Year 4 - South America

Date: 18th Apr 2023 @ 3:37pm

Today we started our unit about The Amazon River. We started by doing a flashback to define some river features and then we got the atlas' out to find South America. We located 10 of the South American countries and then looked at where The Amazon rainforest and rivers are.

Year 4 - Sound Walk

Date: 17th Apr 2023 @ 7:53pm

We started our new Science unit all about Sound today by going around school on a sound walk. We took a decibels meter with us so we could measure the sound in each area and we wrote down what sounds we could hear. We discussed whether or not there would be any areas in school where there's complete silence and we all agreed that would only be likely when school is closed.

Year 4 - Church visit

Date: 30th Mar 2023 @ 2:40pm

Today we had a visit from Matthew and Matthew, who are both part of various churches in and around the area. We had some great conversations about temptation and sacrifice. Matthew told us about the old testament and stories of Hebrews wanting to follow God way back in Ancient Egyptian times and God's followers writing to one of the first churches in Romans times asking about living sacrifice. The children asked some brilliant questions and we had a great afternoon.

Year 4 - Sculpture Art

Date: 28th Mar 2023 @ 4:08pm

This last couple of weeks, Year 4 have been making their food themed designs out of clay and painting them. We took great care to mould the clay into the shapes we needed. Before we painted the clay, we practised the colours we wanted to use in our sketchbooks.

Whole School Art Day 2023

Date: 24th Mar 2023 @ 11:21am

On Thursday all the children fully embraced a whole school art day. From Nursery to Year 6 you could hear the sound of paper being ripped and cut as the children created collages of different things you can find in their home town of Blackpool. From transport in Year 3 to famous landmarks in Year 5, from trees and flowers in Year 1 to collaged signs in Year 6. The children have created some superb pieces of artwork and these are all going to be displayed together to create a whole school mural.

Year 4 - Art Day

Date: 23rd Mar 2023 @ 2:40pm

To start Art Day off we were lucky enough to take part in an Art themed Primary Future event. We had 5 attendees and we asked them:

  • Do you need to wear a uniform?
  • Do you ever work outside?
  • Did you have to go to college and/or university?
  • Do you work with children?
  • Do you travel in your job?
  • Do you need specialist equipment?

Once each volunteer answered the questions we had a guess at what their job was. There were some great guesses! Then is was revealed that we had a graphic designer, UX designer, painting conservator, tattoo artist and an upcycling artist. Their jobs sounded super interesting and it was great to speak to them. Afterwards, we researched some more about their jobs.

In the afternoon, we had a Blackpool theme based around Photomontage (collage). We used our cutting and collaging skills to create a beach scene from pictures of food and drink which you might eat at the beach.

Year 4 - Threats to living things

Date: 23rd Mar 2023 @ 1:53pm

After flashing back to recap the five vertebrates we have been learning about, we started to look at how these living things habitats are under threat. Each table was given an area to research, then they presented their findings to the rest of the class.

We researched:

  • Urbanisation
  • Pollution
  • Deforestation
  • Natural disasters

Key Stage Choir perform at Choir of the Year!

Date: 21st Mar 2023 @ 7:55am

Wow! What an experience!
We are very proud of our choir who performed at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. A big thank you to Mrs. Casey and Mrs. Pope for all of their time and effort given to the children, and to all of the other staff who attended tonight.

Year 4 - Tomb robbers

Date: 20th Mar 2023 @ 3:44pm

Today, we investigated a crime. We were told about some tomb robbers and after reading one of their confessions, we had to reunite the recovered stolen items to their tomb owner. We had to use clues from the recovered items to decide what type of person they would belong to and then we read about the tomb owners. Next, we used all the evidence to get the stolen items back to the correct tomb.

Year 4 - Dan Worsley Workshop

Date: 16th Mar 2023 @ 2:52pm

Year 4 meet Dan Worsley

After a whole-school assembly, Year 4 had the pleasure of an all day writing workshop and one to one feedback session with Dan Worsley. Beginning with an impossible tale told by the author himself, the children were challenged with writing their own short story about a sea creature. After designing their own and thinking about the 'creature's features' they had to tell the story of how the creature came to arrive on a beach and then write a witness account including as much description as they could!
The children relished the opportunity to 'perform' their impossible tale in front of their class and Dan.

Thank you so much for coming Dan, we had an INCREDIBLE day with you!

Year 4 - Discovering Tutankhamun's Tomb

Date: 14th Mar 2023 @ 7:04pm

Today, like Howard Carter in 1922, we entered King Tutankhamun’s tomb. What an experience searching around for clues about the young pharaoh. The tomb was extremely dark, so we used torches to make our way round. Once, we had made note of things we had found, we went back to class and started to discuss the sources of evidence that has survived thousands of years and how they were discovered. At first, we watched the opening scene of a film called Prince of Egypt. This showed that the pyramids were built by slaves. We then investigated evidence as to whether or not that is true. There were argument for and arguments against, however overall mainly agreed that that was not true.

Year 4 - Music 'Old Joe Clark' improvising

Date: 14th Mar 2023 @ 6:49pm

We started the lesson with a recap of Old Joe Clark and musical vocabulary such as beat, staccato, legato, crotchet, quaver, minim, semibreve, dotted minim, tone (major and minor) and ostinato. Then we finished our own compositions on our manuscript paper. We composed using all of the notes on the stave, trying to keep 4 beats in a bar, made up of crotchets. We labelled the stave to know which notes to play and practiced our piece with the backing track Old Joe Clark. We then listened to individual performances.
