Science day ! First we listened to Gustav Holst- The Planets, Full Suite. We thought about how the song was structure and what ‘personality’ it gave us of the planets. Then we listened to Muse- Starlight.

This week, we continue practising and making up a Roman dance. We listened to a piece of Roman music first. We found the beat and decided the type of movements we needed to be making.
Year 4 - Finding the ancient tombs

This week in History we used our History, Geography and Oracy skills. We started by locating Egypt and England on a world map, then we zoomed in to Europe and North Africa so see how far away Egypt is. Next, we were given a map of just Egypt and in groups we had to discuss and decide where we think would have been best to built the Pharaoh tombs. We came up with some sentence starters to support each other in our discussions. We decided that nearest the River Nile was the best option because of the supply of water for not only building but living whilst building the tombs/pyramids. Many groups recognised mountainous areas on the map of Egypt and we discussed that this would be impractical for building. We then zoomed in on an area called Esna and Thebes - an area in The Valley of the Kings. This is where the tombs were built. To finish the lesson we did a zone of inference task with a drawing found in the richly decorated tomb of Nebamun - discovered in 1820.

This week in PSHE we continued to practise our oracy skills. Miss Crystal and Mr Bamber read out statements, such as 'School uniforms should be banned' and we had to decide whether or not we agreed, disagreed or weren't sure. Before we started we came up with a class list of sentence starters to help us when we answer why we have the opinion we did. We are beginning to understand the importance of listening when developing our oracy skills too.

What great World Book Day outfits today! We had a brilliant assembly and then we did some activities which included a quiz and predicting then ending to our class book and creating our own ending.

What a great Forest School session! We learned how to tie knots then we had a competition to get from one side of the site to the other tying ropes together. Then, we learned about the pond and the frog spawn living there. During the session we were able to look at and hold a frog. We had to wet our hands first so that our hands felt smoother for the frog.

Thanks to a generous donation by a parent, each child who took part in our School's Alive performance received a medal in recognition of their hard work, determination and overall brilliant performance!
Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to our parent donor for allowing us to give each child their own medal!

Today we did an online safety quiz. This brought out lots of great conversations between the children and we were able to develop and use the oracy skills we have learned and continue to learn.

Today is the 100th day in school. Our Maths lesson was based around the story “365 penguins”. We were told that penguins eat around 2kg of fish a day and that amount of fish costs £29.25. First, we worked out how many days are in each month of the year and in a week. Then we had to work out how much it would cost to feed ONE penguin for a week, each month of the year and for the whole year. Mr Bamber and Miss Crystal then challenged us to work out how much it would cost to feed the penguin on our birthday! Year 4 showed super perseverance and growth mindset.
Year 4 - The start of our Ancient Egyptian adventure

Today we started our Ancient Egyptians unit. First, we did our start of a new unit timeline flashback. We were given flashback cards for everything we have learned so far in History at Boundary and we had to put them in chronological order. We also went to look at where Ancient Egypt appears on the big timeline in the hall and we soon realised it is a HUGE period of time – around 2500 years. Next, we were given a placemat on our tables and together we noted down anything we already knew from the picture stimulus’. Then, we watched a video and did information runs in our table groups. These activities meant that we learned as many new things as we could about Ancient Egypt, spoke about them to peers on our desks and told the rest of the class. After that, we looked at an anachronism picture and we had to use the knowledge we had gained so far to spot the things wish were the odd ones out. Lastly, we went on an Ancient Egyptian Now, Press, Play adventure where we learned more about the afterlife and how pharaohs were preserved.

On the last day of Spring 1, we welcomed parents and carers into school so that the children could showcase everything they have learned during our Fit 2 Go course. From living a healthy lifestyle, to teeth health, as well as physical and mental health, the children showcased their work brilliantly. Four children from the year group won certificates for their fantastic efforts during Fit2Go. Well done everyone!

During the last week of Spring 1, we completed our RSE week activities. Together in our own classroom, we looked at what a lifecycle is and what it looks like for humans. We then began to discuss the stage of life Year 4 are entering into, which is puberty. Puberty can begin to start from the age of 8. We discussed changes that will happen to our bodies, for both the girls and the boys. Then we split into a girl group and a boy group. One group completed some activities about what healthy relationships are and who our trusted adults are and the other group learned about periods - then we swapped so that everyone learned about everything. Both the girls and the boys were really sensible and asked some really important questions. Well done Year 4!

The first thing we did was flashback to last week's lesson. The children were amazing at remembering the story 'Blood and Milk' and what Sikhs learn from this teaching. Then we went on to learn about the Sikh 5Ks. These are 5 items (like our uniform) that Sikhs wear which represents beliefs they have. We then discussed how this can relate to us!

Today we had to draw circuits. We realised that it would be too difficult to draw the actual components (parts) of the circuit all the time and it would take too long. So we learned that components of a circuit have symbols. This made it much easier to draw a working circuit. We then explored using components such as light bulbs, wires, buzzers, batteries and cells to make different circuits. We found out that a battery (such as a car battery) has multiple cells, whereas a AA battery is actually a cell because it is singular. This made a lot of sense to us because a car battery needs more power and voltage to allow a car to work compared to a remote control which usually just needs one or two cells.

This week is Road Safety Week. We have been talking about how to remain safe on our roads; not just as paedestrians, but also as passengers in cars and as bicycle users. We looked at some different scenarios and decided whether people were in a safe or unsafe situation. We did a Kahoot quiz too! Maple and Laurel were very good at discussing Road Safety - they now need to go home and share their learning with their family.
Year 4 - Multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100

This week, we were introduced to our Electricity unit. We explored lots of electrical vocabulary and tried to answer questions together as a class. We discovered that for electricity to flow there needs to be a complete circuit – whether that be by battery or mains. We discussed that electricity from the mains doesn’t just come magically, but it comes from substations and power stations. We found out that electricity is created by generators which can be powered by gas, coal, oil, wind or solar. We discussed lots of examples of battery powered and mains powered appliances. We decided that from electricity we can get light, heat (toaster), movement (a fan) and sound.

This half term we will be completing our Fit2Go programmes with Blackpool Football Club Community Trust. The programme consists of a practical lesson and a theory lesson. Each week there is a different theme to the week.
Week one: Healthy lifestyles

Week four: It's all about balance
Week five: Snacks and label reading
Week six: Teeth and hydration
For our theory about healthy lifestyles this week, we looked at what we need to stay healthy. For example, 9-11 hours sleep, drink water and a balance of foods from different food groups. Then for our practical we did some warm ups and then played dodgeball.
Year 4 Emile Timestable World Cup Update!

We are so proud to share that 10 Boundary children came in the top 100 out of over 250,000 children from across the country who took part in the Emile Timestable World Cup with one child coming in the TOP 50!
Year 4 have been working hard on their times tables, improving their knowledge, recall and application skills and their hard work is really beginning to show in the classroom and in competitions like this! Well done Year 4!

Today we made our linkage and lever system Christmas cards. We used loose pivots to connect the components together, then we attached the components to the card itself using a fixed pivot. The children designed their cards themselves, with a design brief of Christmas! Take a look at the QR code to see the cards in actions.

During this Primary Futures video, we looked at different festive careers. The Children met Katie the brand manager of a wrapping paper company, Jason the craftsman at Buckingham Palace, Andrew and Jane the Christmas tree grower and decoration shop owner and Oliver the warehouse manager for Crisis Christmas centres supporting vulnerable people experiencing homelessness.
