Year 5 - Christmas Dinner

Date: 12th Dec 2023 @ 9:45am

Today, we had our fantastic Christmas dinner and wore our Christmas jumpers. Everyone was very full after enjoying their dinner!

Year 5 - Text Feature Detectives

Date: 12th Dec 2023 @ 9:37am

As our Reading into Writing journey into stories from other cultures continues, pupils were challenged to find structure and language features from a variety of different text. We have been learning about the Australian Aborigional Dreamtime stories, a group of creation stories from their culture. Pupils identified the features before working collaboratively to find them in different stories.

Year 5 - Crazy Conductors

Date: 7th Dec 2023 @ 2:32pm

In this lesson, pupils investigated which materials were good conductors of heat and which materials were good conductors of electricity. We concluded that metals were the best conductors of heat and electricity, and also that materials that were good heat conductors were also good electrical conductors. Materials that are not good conductors are called insulators.

Year 5 - Vicious Vikings

Date: 1st Dec 2023 @ 9:38am

This week, our journey into Anglo-Saxon Briatain continued with a discussion about the Vikings. The Vikings were invading tribes from Norway, Sweden and Finland, who attacked northern Britain during the Bronze Age. In this lesson, pupils learned about different events and had to decide how much of a threat the Vikings were to the Anglo-Saxons.  In groups, pupils created 'living graphs' of the period.

Year 5 - Quiz Coding

Date: 1st Dec 2023 @ 9:30am

This week, pupils in year 5 created a quiz game on Scratch. They coded an algorithm using 'selection' to make a 'true' outcome and a 'false' outcome depending on the user input. Pupils tested their programs and debugged it to make it run better.

Year 5 - Amazing Artefacts

Date: 22nd Nov 2023 @ 8:11pm

Today, pupils in year 5 were given the opportunity to examine a number of Anglo-Saxon artefacts from the museum. We looked closely at the artefacts and tried to work out what they were made of and what they were for. Pupils also got the chance to try on a chain-mail vest and a reproduction of the helmet found in the 'empty grave' at Sutton Hoo.

Year 5 - 5 Pillars

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 4:36pm

As part of our learning about Islam in RE, pupils in year 5 had an immersive experience using the Now Press Play equipment. In role as an alien sent to Earth, the children 'visited' a Mosque and saw people praying at the Kaaba in Mecca. During the experience pupils learned about the Qur'an and the 5 Pillars of Islam.

Year 5 - Super Solutions

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 4:00pm

This week pupils in year 5 conducted an experiment to find out which solids would make a solution when mixed with water. Solids that dissolve into a liquid are known as soluble. Solids that do not dissolve are called insoluble. Salt and sugar were soluble, whereas sand and soil were insoluble. A liquid can only hold so much of a soluble material, as all of the gaps between the particles are filled. Increasing the temperature allows the solute (liquid) to hold more.

Year 5 - Amazing Acids

Date: 9th Nov 2023 @ 4:04pm

In this lesson, pupils used universal indicator paper to find out if different substances were acid, alkali or neutral. Pupils also found out what happened when you mix an acid (vinegar) with an alkali (bicarbonate of soda). We obseverved that a gas is produced which makes it fizz. Pupils identified that this gas was carbon dioxide.

Year 5 - Rampaging Robots

Date: 9th Nov 2023 @ 3:54pm

Today, pupils in year 5 were given the oportunity of taking part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) workshop. Working in small groups, they had to build a lego robot, which incorporated a small computer, lights and motors. Pupils then coded algorithms to guide their robot around a circuit. The final challenge was to collect an item in their robot using a scoop or magnet. All the pupils had a great experience and learnt a lot about coding and engineering.

Year 5 - Crazy Combustion

Date: 31st Oct 2023 @ 9:34pm

As part of our journey into 'Materials and their Properties', we have been learning about the 'fire triangle' - which explains that a fire needs fuel, oxygen and heat. In today's lesson, we conducted an experiment to show that oxygen is needed for a fire to burn. We timed how long a candle would burn when trapped inside different size glasses. We predicted that the flame would burn for longer in the biggest glass because there was more oxygen.

Year 5 - Fabulous Factors

Date: 30th Oct 2023 @ 9:15pm

As part of our journey into multiplication and division, we have been learning about multiples and factors of numbers. In this lesson, after working together as a class to find factors of 16 and 20, pupils worked in a small group to find all of the factors of 12. We used the cubes to make arrays, which helped us. The factors of 12 are: 1, 3, 4, 6 and 12.

Year 5 - Flashback in French

Date: 20th Oct 2023 @ 11:52am

This half term in French, we have been recapping the vocabulary we have learned in previous year groups. We have counted to twenty, discussed different colours and flashed back to the names of the days and the months. In the final two lessons, we focussed on classroom commands and instructions, that we use during our French lessons and at other times in the school day.

Year 5 - No Pen Morning

Date: 19th Oct 2023 @ 4:43pm

On Wednesday morning it was No Pen Day at Boundary. We had a great time in class, learning without using pens and pencils to record our work. For maths, pupils completed a tarsia puzzle, which required them to recall our previous learning and match numbers to Roman numerals. For our Reading into Writing lesson, pupils worked in small groups to build a non-chronological report from different features.

Blackpool Zoo Orienteering

Date: 17th Oct 2023 @ 12:48pm

We were invited to take part in two fun festivals within Blackpool Zoo where each school will be given a map of the park to help them to solve the clues to find the right animals.

The children, chosen from Year 5, had a great morning with Mrs. Millar and Mr. Parsons supported by Leaders from Blackpool Sixth Form. Efficient map reading and a keen sense of time meant that we returned to the finish before the other schools – leaving us enough time to visit some of the animals not on our list (and the dinosaurs too!).

Year 5 R.E - Why Is It Sometimes Difficult To Do The Right Thing?

Date: 11th Oct 2023 @ 12:47pm

This half-term we have been investigating the key question Why Is It Sometimes Difficult To Do The Right Thing?

We have been discussing sources of guidance, beginning with the definition of the word guidance

First in a group, then as a class, we discussed the sources of guidance we have in our lives. We split them up into categories including; at home, at school and at a club.

In one lesson we looked at a source of guidance for Christians: The 10 Commandments

We talked about their meaning and how they were given to Moses from God. Our task, as a group, was to put them into what we thought was the order of importance…but there were only 9 squares! Each group then had to justify why they had left one out.

Spelling Bee

Date: 11th Oct 2023 @ 11:49am

We have held our first Spelling Bee of the year and what a wonderful event it was! 4 children in each year group represented their house and were given three words to spell from over a list of 30 possible words. Every child showed courage and determination when it came to spelling their words. It was a very close contest, with Chepstow winning overall with 15 out of 15. We are very proud of all the children who represented their house and are looking forward to the next one.

Year 5 - African Drumming

Date: 10th Oct 2023 @ 5:38pm

Today, all of the children in year 5 were given an amazing opportunity to take part in an African drumming workshop. Pupils learned about the different percussion instruments from west Africa and had a go at playing a djembe - an African drum. We learned different dances and rhythms and performed what we had learned in a whole school assembly at the end of the day. What an amazing experience!

Year 5 - Biographies for Black History Month

Date: 6th Oct 2023 @ 4:27pm

This week the pupils in year 5 have been using what they have learned to write a biography about a famous black musician. They reseached the musician's family background and their music career, before planning, drafting and editing their writing. Today, pupils wrote their finished biography!

YEAR 5 - UK Mountains

Date: 5th Oct 2023 @ 9:15am

This week, pupils used their map reading skills to find the highest peaks in the UK. First, we discussed what the UK is and what is meant by 'Great Britain and Ireland'. Pupils then identified the highest mountain in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and marked them on a map of the UK. Some pupils went further, and found out facts about the mountains, such as their height in metres.

Year 5 - A Day of Democratic Decisions

Date: 28th Sep 2023 @ 2:54pm

Today was the election day for our school council members. Four Hawthorn pupils put themselves forward to be chosen and presented their manifesto to the class. This morning, all of the pupils voted in secret to select our representative. Good luck, everyone.

Year 5 - Marvellous Maps

Date: 28th Sep 2023 @ 2:48pm

Today, pupils began to create their final piece of artwork for our typography and maps journey. As you can see, pupils are creating a 3D map of an island, which has been inspired by Michael Morpurgo's book, Kensuke's Kingdom. Pupils are using their typography skills to create words and lettering to make the map look aesteically pleasing.

Year 5 - Mapping Mountains

Date: 27th Sep 2023 @ 12:33pm

Pupils in year 5 used our school world map to mark on the location of the seven summits. Pupils had found the locations in an atlas in a previous lesson, and were happy to share their knowledge with the rest of the school on our corridor display.

Year 5 - The Seven Summits

Date: 27th Sep 2023 @ 12:27pm

Our geography journey into mountains begun with pupils answering the question, 'What is a mountain?'. We then found out about the 'seven summits' - the largest mountain on each of the seven continents. Pupils used their map skills to locate these mountains and mark them on a world map, before finding out more information about each peak.
