Year 5 - PSHE - Managing Impulsivity
Date: 27th Jan 2025 @ 11:46am
In this lesson we talked about IMPULSIVITY. Impulsivity means acting quickly without thinking about the consequences. It can make us say or do things we later regret. Understanding impulsivity helps us make smarter choices and respond to situations more thoughtfully
As a Year Group, we discussed how to manage our impulses and make better decisions in our lives. We thought about how to manage impulsivity, we first need to recognise impulsive behaviours in ourselves. This can include interrupting others, making snap decisions, or acting before thinking in. By understanding our own habits, we can start to control our reactions and think before we act, leading to better outcomes.
Finally, we looked at some strategies for managing our impulses, starting by simply acknowledge and them. There are several techniques that can help manage impulsivity. One useful method is to pause and take a deep breath before responding. Another is to count to ten. These strategies give us a moment to think, allowing us to make more thoughtful decisions rather than reacting impulsively. You can see that we practiced these and put them to the test. Scan the QR code for some role plays too!
Year 5 - Charanga YUMU - Composing
Date: 23rd Jan 2025 @ 10:09am
This week we recapped Musical Vocabulary and the names and values of notes on the stave and time signature. We sung the Freedom is Coming song again, changing the key and the dynamics.Using Chromebooks we composed using YUMU through charanga, composing using our own ABA structure using the notes provided recap Ternary form.
Year 5 - Aujourd'hui , c'est quel jour?
Date: 23rd Jan 2025 @ 10:06am
This half term, Year 5 are focusing on how to say the date in French. They have been learning how to say the days of the week, the months of the year and numbers up to 31. They have also been learning how to ask and respond in French to questions about the days of the week.
Date: 16th Jan 2025 @ 9:34am
On Wednesday the children in Schools Alive got the opportunity to professionally record the sound for their upcoming performance. The children loved singing into the microphones and worked hard to sing in unison. Some children even had solos and all did a fantastic job!

This week the pupils in year 5 began their science journey all about animals. In this lesson we talked about the human stages of life and pupils learned the meaning of gestation and life span. Pupils then drew a scatter graph plotting the gestation period against life span for certain animals. We discovered that larger animals had a longer life span and a longer gestation period compared to small animals.

This week we have been looking at RESPONSIBILITY and how we can be responsible for ourselves and our actions and for other things including pets, younger siblings and PLANTS!
We signed a responsibility promise to take care of our plants and our first task was to fill our plant pots with the right soil. We then carefully planted our seed in the pot. Year 5 discussed that our responsibility would last much longer than just today, we would have to water and feed our seed as it grows, ensuring it gets the right amount of sunlight too. Eventually, we will have to repot our plant into the ground when it grows bigger!
Finally, we talked about how our responsibilities and our actions we undertook to care for our plant have consequences; being responsible means our plant will grow, not taking our responsibilities seriously will mean our plant will not survive!
Date: 9th Jan 2025 @ 9:40am
In this lesson we were introduced to the main beliefs of Hinduism and, as ever, we used our 5 finger recall facts!
We heard from Vandana, a 22 year-old Hindu who explained about how she works, lives and plays all while following Dharma – the duty or moral responsibility in Hinduism. We discussed how an equivalent to Dharma for us would be The Always Way and following the Boundary Always Promises.
Finally, we discussed Brahman, the formless and eternal entity in Hinduism and how this can be depicted in animal or human form. Finally, we designed our own deity to depict Brahman and how they/it might influence the world around us.

As the culminaton of our short journey looking at Christianity, we sketched, planned and finished a piece of topographical art linked to the Nativty. We used skills we have learnt in art and geography to create a nativity scene using a map of the Jerusalem and Bethlehem as a centre image.
Date: 19th Dec 2024 @ 8:26am
In Year 5 we have been using selection and conditions to code our own quizzes. We then had the opportunity to play each others quizzes, analysing and giving feedback to help us improve and debug.
Date: 19th Dec 2024 @ 8:23am
During the first part of this term, Year 5 read Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. We really enjoyed learning about the characters, their emotions and what it takes to write a book that we were all so engaged with - it rapidly became a year group favourite; so much so that in the final part of Autumn 2 we watched the film! We then spent some time analysing the film versus the book, discussing how much had been left out (due to time) and hwo much more vivid the details were when we didn't rely on our imagination but were instead presented with a fully animated, living, breathing world right on the screen!
Date: 12th Dec 2024 @ 9:05am
As part of our Christmas activities and fundraising events, the whole school took part in an Elf Run. Taking place on the Key Stage 1 playground, classes used the Boundary Mile to get fit, run quick and have fun (elfing around you might say!) and all on our annual Christmas Dinner and Christmas Jumper day!
Date: 11th Dec 2024 @ 3:00pm
In our Geography unit, we have been creating a non-chronological report. The children put together their non-chronological reports using Google Docs, meaning they needed to use their Digital Literacy skills to insert images, diagrams and the appropriate captions to enchance our written work.
Date: 6th Dec 2024 @ 2:07pm
We have been working with Wigan Warriors this half-term, developing our skills in invasion games. We have learnt how to think tactically, how to make decisions at speed and how to find space in order to avoid having one of our tags taken.
Date: 6th Dec 2024 @ 10:46am
Today, pupils in year 5 were given the opportunity to examine a number of Anglo-Saxon artefacts from the museum. We looked closely at the artefacts and tried to work out what they were made of and what they were for. Pupils also got the chance to try on a chain-mail vest and a reproduction of the helmet found in the 'empty grave' at Sutton Hoo.
Year 5 - Excellent Evaporating
Date: 5th Dec 2024 @ 9:25am
This week pupils were given the task of seperating a saltwater solution. We reminded ourselves about what a solution is and how it is different to a mixture, and pupils identified salt as the solute and water as the solvent. Pupils completed an experiment where they heated the solution to evaporate the water. This left behind crystals of pure salt. In a discussion, pupils linked this to prior learning about the water-cycle.
Date: 28th Nov 2024 @ 12:04pm
For 'No Pen Morning' this term, pupils in year 5 completed maths and writing activities without using a pen or pencil, or mark making of any kind. In maths, we returned to prior learning about Roman numerals and place value. The pupils completed a tri-puzzle, matching numbers to the Roman numerals of the same value, and also matching equivalent fractions. In Reading into Writing, the children published a piece of writing using Google docs, which helps to develop their word processing skills and speed up their typing!
Date: 25th Nov 2024 @ 10:33am
We started this week by welcoming Parents and Carers into class. This was a wonderful opportunity for Year 5 to demonstrate their coding skills. Together with a partner and their adults, the children were tasked with coding a Pong-style computer game. Children were able to code, debug and then play their completed game. Thank you to all those parents and carers who were able to join us. We look forward to seeing you again at other Together Time sessions later in the school year!
Year 5 - Seperating Solids and Liquids
Date: 19th Nov 2024 @ 2:13pm
In this lesson we used our knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating. We conducted an experiment to investigate whether the mass of sand was affected when filtered. We had to analyse a solution and decide how best to separate the component parts. From the results of this lesson we were able to explain how a solution is formed.
Date: 19th Nov 2024 @ 2:07pm
In this lesson, pupils used universal indicator paper to find out if different substances were acid, alkali or neutral. Pupils also found out what happened when you mix an acid (vinegar) with an alkali (bicarbonate of soda). We obseverved that a gas is produced which makes it fizz. Pupils identified that this gas was carbon dioxide.

This half term we have been learning in French how to talk about animals. We have improved our pronunciation of the animals, asked questions, introduced the characters and said if our animals have a name. We have also learned the negative 'Je ne pas' and started to use the connective but 'mais' to explain different examples. We did some excellent listening tasks too!
Date: 12th Nov 2024 @ 1:34pm
This week in Science we took part in an investigation to find out which materials are soluble.
We first ensured that we all knew what the terms around solubilty were so we could talk scientifically during our experiment.
We then took turns to gather a material and stir it into water and watch what happened. We used sand, sugar, salt and soil. As you can tell from the photographs, our children in Year 5 learnt so much about the materials and their solubility. Once we had finished our experiment, we spent time to write our results down and compare them with what different groups found.
Date: 12th Nov 2024 @ 1:32pm
As part of our Remembrance service, Year 5 made and planted poppies in our remembrance garden. Each of the children wrote names of soldiers and we thought about their sacrifice when we planted them. The children also took part in our whole school act of remembrance.
Date: 5th Nov 2024 @ 9:37pm
This week across school we have been celebrating Anti-Bullying week. We started the week off with the a whole school assembly based around this year's theme ‘Choose Respect’. Throughout the week the children have been learning about being respectful and why this is such an important skill for life. Alongside this they have also been exploring the theme of bullying including what it means, different types of bullying, what to do if you are being bullied, the difference of a bystander and upstander, how to solve conflicts and what discrimination means. We finished of the week by inviting everyone to wear odd socks to celebrate everyone’s differences and promote kindness. What a fantastic week we have had!
Year 5 - Skills for Life: Managing Distractions
Date: 5th Nov 2024 @ 2:20pm
In this PSHE lesson we looked at distractions and how to manage them. It turned out that we were really good at giving examples of distractions, mainly because we come across them all of the time! We started by defining the word ‘distraction’ and then we looked at categorising them into ‘internal’ and ‘external’ distractions. Finally, some of us put together an action plan of how we could manage distractions both at home and at school.

This week we have introduced Remembrance Day to our class, focusing on why we have a Remembrance Day and why poppies are used to symbolise this important day.
Children in Year 5 produced a range of beautiful poppy art to decorate a fallen soldier. We had to use special techniques to create the different drawing and sketching techniques.
This is the start of a two-week period we have in school to remember and honour members of the armed forces.
