This week, our Year 5 children watched a video from the One Goal website all about what it means to be a Well-being Champion. The video helped them understand the important role these champions play in supporting others and promoting positive mental health across the school. The children really enjoyed learning about how they can help make our school a happier, kinder place, and they’re now getting ready to apply for the role themselves. We can’t wait to see who steps up to take on this exciting responsibility!

Today we held our first Spelling Bee of the year. Each house was represented by the best spellers from Year 2 - Year 6 and the children were tested on spellings they have been learning in Autumn 1. We are very proud of all the children for being their house representative and spelling some very tricky words in front of the whole school. The overall winners were Chepstow, who managed to spell 12/15 spellings across all 5 years groups.
Year 5 - Why is it sometimes difficult to do the right thing?
Date: 3rd Oct 2025 @ 7:54am
Today we discussed the Lord’s prayer and what each line might mean to Christians. Some groups re-wrote their verse to fit in with modern-day vocabulary and some groups changed or defined specific words to make it easier to understand.
As a class, we then looked through each line and thought about how the prayer acts as a reminder to Christians about how great their God is and is evidence of their hope in that he will one day return to Earth and rule it as He does in heaven.

In this lesson, pupils explored how to act with empathy and show respect in situations involving discrimination, teasing and bullying. Through role-play and guided discussion, they examined a range of realistic scenarios and considered the impact of words and actions on others.
The Year group worked collaboratively to identify respectful responses, such as standing up for someone being treated unfairly, offering support, and seeking adult help when necessary. This approach encouraged pupils to develop their understanding of kindness, fairness and inclusion, while giving them practical strategies for responding appropriately and respectfully in challenging social situations.

Our fitness unit continues as we look at increasing our heart rate through gentle exercise, increasing this so we use more energy. This week we also introduced the skill of evading in small group games involving attack and defence positions. We thought tactically about how we would move in order to slow down an attacker and how sometimes this involves larger movements of our bodies all the while the attacker had to think about how they moved, introducing 'false moves' to put off the defenders and break through the defense.
Year 5 - School Council Elections
Date: 25th Sep 2025 @ 10:51am
School Council Elections!
Yesterday was a very exciting day- it was Election Day for the School Councillors!
Candidates started the day by presenting their manifesto to their class and then every child completed a ballot paper to vote for their chosen representative. The voting booths had been set up in the hall and children placed their ballot paper in the ballot box. After the votes had been counted, an assembly was held to reveal the results.
The children learnt about the key British Value, democracy, what it means and if it is a good thing.

This term in Science, Year 5 have been exploring the Solar System. We have looked at:
-
What is at the center of the Solar System
-
What the Solar System is made up of
-
Evidence that shows the Earth is round
The children have enjoyed researching, asking questions, and discovering fascinating facts about our place in space!

During our latest Geography lesson on mountains, the classroom turned into a mini mountain range! After learning about the key features of mountains – from peaks and ridges to valleys and slopes – some of our pupils decided to get creative. Using modelling clay, they built their very own mountains, carefully shaping and labelling the different features we’d discussed.
It was fantastic to see them using their new knowledge in such a hands-on way. The clay mountains sparked lots of discussion about real-life landscapes and helped everyone visualise how mountains form. A brilliant mix of creativity and geography in action!

This week, Year 5 have been exploring a news report about the potential ban of energy drinks for under-16s. The children engaged in thoughtful discussions around the topic and examined key vocabulary from the text, including excessive, fluctuation, signalling, ban, and voluntarily.
To deepen their understanding, pupils answered comprehension questions, developing their ability to retrieve information and interpret meaning. They also worked in groups to perform sections of the news report in front of the class, building their confidence in public speaking and teamwork.
It has been a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop both their reading skills and their awareness of current health-related issues.

Today we were listening and appraising. Next we reviewed the Elements of Music .To get us ready we warmed up by completing the copy back activities to find the pulse and named the notes onscreen. Using the Music listening Mats, we then listened to Ghost Parade and discussed the instruments we could hear. This song is in 20th and 21st Orchestral style with vocal. To refresh our memories we looked at how an orchestra is set up and which instruments are in one. We listened to different instruments. Next we created a class mind map of our responses to the music. Finally we began to learn the lyrics to the song so that we could perform it.

The activities cover 3 key areas that are proven in research to support children's focus, mental health and general wellbeing: Alerting, Organising and Calmning. Please feel free to talk to your child about these activities - you might find them useful to use at home.

Here’s a selection of photos from our children’s recent PGL residential. They had a fantastic time learning new skills, making memories, and working together as a team.
A big thank you to our dedicated staff for supporting the children and making the trip so special!

Today, the pupils not on the PGL trip have been busy learning how to sketch and use watercolour paints to create 'still life' artwork. We looked at the lines and shapes that the items made and then added tones to show light and shade. After sketching, the pupils practised the techniques used to paint using watercolours and then painted a 'still life' image.

Years 5 and 6 had a great hour talking to the Coastguard volunteers. We learned how to stay safe around water and how to look for dangers. We also learned that in an emergency on the beach or in the sea, you should never put yourself in danger and always call 999.

The children and staff in Year 5 were excited to kick off Health Week with our first big event—inflatable football! It was a fantastic way to get everyone moving and having fun right from the start. The energy was high, and the children threw themselves into the challenge (sometimes quite literally!). For those who preferred something a bit different, archery offered a great alternative, and it was lovely to see how focused and engaged they were. Overall, it was a brilliant start to the week, and we’re looking forward to what’s next!
Year 2- Gets taken over by Year 5
Date: 20th Jun 2025 @ 3:06pm
Yesterday, year two were taken over by year five. Miss Hester-Hopwood and Mr Cooke were in our class teaching us all about homophones and number bonds. We did a matching activity to match the correct spelling to the picture before doing Maths recapping our number bonds to 20. We loved the Year 5 children teaching us!

Today our Year 1 classes were taken over by Year 5 teachers! We enjoyed meeting our new teachers and TAs first thing this morning, before listening to our new head teacher during assembly time. We then spent the morning exploring Beebots, what their buttons do and how to make them perform commands we want to give them.
