Reception Chinese New Year Celebrations!

This week we have been celebrating Chinese New Year!
We decorated our home corner and made Chinese lanterns and dragons. The children learned the skill of folding paper into a concertina and attaching a handle and sticks to their work. Ribbon dancing, fan dancing and dragon dancing was enjoyed by everyone and we read The Chinese New Year Story (how the new year animals were chosen) and wrote about our facvourite animal from the story. This year it is The Year of the Tiger!
Year 4 We take 'Pride' in our work!

In our latest Reading into Writing journey we have been learning all about newspaper reports and the features that come with them. We have also put a focus on learning about the LGBTQ+ community and have based our newspaper report on Blackpool Pride. We have had some amazing discussions and open-mindedness and some fantastic work! Mr McCormack and Mr Bamber are looking forward to reading the final pieces!

The children loved this weeks story "The Naughty Bus". They used the story telling basket to retell the story, created their own buses and used their painting skills to paint pictures of buses. We also looked at the "s" sound and created "Stop" signs for the bus because we throught it was becoming out of control!

Nursery provides a mixture of experiences and some of these come straight from the children! This week they have been coming up with lots of super ideas. When they were playing outside, the children asked for some blankets so they could turn the crates in to beds! Then they used the bricks in some really inventive ways. One little girl said "It's my phone. I'm on my phone!" The chidlren also asked if they could have some dressing up clothes which led to super interaction and speech and language opportunities.
Year 5 Investigating water resistance

As part of our topic on forces, pupils were challenged to investigate the effect of water resistance on an object. We molded playdough into different shapes and dropped them into water to see how fast they would sink. We discovered that, thin shapes and ball shapes sank faster than large flat shapes. This is because the larger shapes created more water resistance! Water resistance is the force of the water pushing back against the force of gravity - which is trying to make the object sink.

This week in Geography we have been learning all ab out how waves affect out coastlines. We have learned all about contructive and deconstructive waves and the impact they have on our coastlines. We had a conducted a great experiment using water and sand to recreate the two types of waves in our classroom!

In RE this week we looked further into Hindu shrines and how Murtis help Hindus to think of God when they worship. We looked at lots of different examples of Murtis, including both Gods and Goddesses, and looked at why Hindus may worship them. For example, we learnt that Ganesh is the God of wealth and is believed to bring good luck. Hindus may worship him before anything new is started. We then chose a Murti to represent using salt dough, thinking about why Hindus may choose this Murti to worship. We used the skills of pulling, squeezing, and rolling to manipulate our salt dough into the form of our Murti.

This week Reception have been learning all about Antarctica, what the climate is like there and finding out about different animals that live there. We have been looking at world maps and globes and identified that the top and bottoms parts of the globe have the coldest climate and in the middle is where it is warmer because of the equator. We found out that Antarctica is one of the 7 world continents and is home to the penguin species. During class discussions, exploring globes and atlases, playing with small world figures and reading different information books we found out lots of interesting facts and learnt lots of new words including; continent, climate, north and south pole, temperatire, globe, equator, blubber and carnivore. We produced our own child initiated writing about the different animals used the globes to locate different places, looked at how he animals had adapted to their environment and created out own narratives.

This week we have conquered adding by making 10! We firstly recapped and practised our number bonds to 10 by singing our number bonds song and improving our quick recall. We then moved onto looking at adding onto the number 10. We worked through practical examples together and discussed each step. We then went off to explore a number of different sums practically. We wrote the original sum before moving counters to make 10 and writing our new sum. We showed lots of persererance and determination with our new learning!
Year 4 There's a very thin line between a numerator and a denominator!

In Maths this week we have been recapping our knowledge of fractions! We have remembered quite a lot from Year 3 which is amazing and we had a bit of fun writing on our tables making fraction equations with numicon.
Reception Meet Danny Determination

This week the children were introduced to the characteristic monster Danny Determination. Danny Determination taught us that you have to keep on trying and not give up no matter how hard it might be. Children showed determination with their phonics, writing and maths- even using the new sports equipment outside.

The classrooms in Reception are alive with the sound of music!
Each week the children enjoy singing along to their favourite songs and playing a range of instruments-. This week they sang a a phase 3 letter sound song, played a congo drum to keep a steady beat and used polar animals to make a pattern song.

We have been busy practising our mark making and phonics skills this week! The children enjoy mark making on a variety of different materials and our perspex easle is great for writing on with pens and can also be used to paint on. The children enjoyed using it to practise writing their names and did a super job. We also looked at things beginning with "p" this week and made some perfect "p" penguins!

This week in our gymnastic session, we have continued to focus on balances and counter balances. We learned how to do several rolls, including a log roll and the teddy bear roll. We then combined the rolls with balances to create a short routine. Finally, included apparatus in our routines.

Today we enjoyed our first Forest School session of this half term. We loved being back in the Forest School area and this week we explored the fire triangle and the elements needed to keep a fire going. We then split into two groups - one group practised making 'dragon sparkles' with the fire lighters before toasting and eating marshmallows, whilst the other group got creative with sticks and various materials!

This week in Music, Year 6 have been using glockenspiels to improvise. After finding the pulse in the piece of music, we listened and responded to musical patterns - first by clapping and then by playing the notes on the glockenspiels. Finally, we improvided using the notes from the piece.

This half term, Year Two are creating our own glove puppets based on an animal from some of the stories we have read to inspire our Writing journey. After some experimenting with which material is best to use to join two materials together we decided we would sew. Yesterday, we spent some time learning to thread a needle, tie a knot in the thread and begin to sew. We all enjoyed it despite it being very tricky! Miss Duckworth and Miss Hooson were proud of the determination the children demonstrated and how supportive they were of the peers. Keep this up for when we sew our final products!

This week in Computing we have been creating media using digital painting. Over the past few weeks we have been using the Paintz program during our Computing lessons and getting to grips with all the tools we can use. Today we looked at a piece of abstract art and discussed some key questions. We talked about the shapes we could see, the colours we could see and how we thought the art was made. We then had a go at recreating a similar piece of art work. We had 3 steps to follow to succeed and by the end of the lesson we had all followed these steps to create our own art work!

Through our Art journey this week we have explored collage. We began by looking at examples of collage and discussing what collage is. We looked at examples of work created by two artists Henri Matisse and Kurt Schwitters. We talked about the colour, shape and texture created in each piece. We then explored different techniques, ripping paper, cutting patterns and manipulating paper before creating our final collage. Our final collage was an animal of our choice where we displayed all the techniques we had learnt through our journey.

This week, we begun our new Maths topic of Multiplication and Division. Our first lesson involved recognising whether groups were equal or unequal before we challenged the children to create their own arrays in as many ways as possible. It was no surprise that the children created lots of different ways of making arrays using a variety of resources around the room such as money, numicon, counters, counting bears, base 10 and ten frames.
We will now begin to look at representing the calculations of arrays as a repeated addition and as a multiplication sentence. Although this is a difficult concept, we are proud of the determination and perseverance the children are displaying, keep up the great work!

This half term, Year Two our Musical focus is exploring feelings through Music discussing how it makes us feel and how music makes the world a better place.
So far, we have studied a song called 'Rainbows' which is a song about Pride and Identity. We discussed what this meant to us as individuals and came to the conclusion it is important that we all respect each other and everyone's viewpoints. We then learnt the words to the song and practiced as a class to perform it as well as learning to play notes E, C and D in time to the song. Each week, alongside discussing the song, singing and playing the Glockenspiel we play games to find the beat and clap rhythmsOver the next few weeks, we will continue to look at more songs and further discuss how music makes the world a better place.

Last week, we had our favourite day- No Pen Day! Pupils and Teachers alike put out pens down for a full day and focused on using our communication skills. Throughout the day, we worked collaboratively to continue our Reading into Writing and Maths journey's.
We continued our Reading into Writing journey by learning about different tenses. We identified we can tell a sentences tense by finding the verb- to show matching past and present tense verbs we had to find the person with the verb of the opposite tense before sorting a variety of verbs and sentences into the tenses they were written.
In Maths, we consolidated our knowledge of giving change by playing a game of Mathopoly. For each square we landed on we had to calculate how much change a person would get depending on how much they spent and the coin they used to pay.
In the afternoon, we enjoyed continuing our learning of Hinduism with Mrs Bunday and PE with Mr Willetts.

Oh no! There's a problem! Some of the toys have been frozen in ice! How can we get them out?
The children were given blocks of ice with toys frozen inside and a choice of ways to set them free! They were given warm water, sponges and hammers! They worked hard to try and free the toys from the ice. They talked about how the ice was melting and knew that if they hit the ice it would slowly get smaller and the toys would be free! You'll be pleased to know that they did manage to free all of the toys - phew!

The children have been busy exploring ice in the outside area. The ice was simply placed on a tray and left for the children to make their own observations, use new vocabulary they had learned that week and show collaboration.

At the start of Spring 1, Year 5's Science Club was officially launched!
So far, we have had a go at the following experiments to investigate different areas of science:
Making giant fingerprints (DNA and what makes us different)
Making raisins dance (Buoyancy)
Making different sized paper rockets (Air resistance)
Writing messages with lemon juice (Oxidisation)
Magic milk (Surface tension)
