The Land Down Under!

Date: 10th May 2021 @ 4:28pm

In Geography, we continued our learning on Australia. We learnt about natural and manmade landmarks. We started by finding some famous landmarks on a map of the UK and then went on  to compare these to Australian landmarks.

In groups, we were given a wallet of jigsaw pieces. We had to piece these together to make 5 famous Australia landmarks. We then had names and facts to try to match up to our landmarks. Finally we located these famous attractions on a map of Australia! We just wish we could have visited these amazing places in real life!

100 Hungry Ants!

Date: 10th May 2021 @ 4:25pm

Year Two worked hard in pairs to solve a division problem based on the story of 100 Hungry Ants by Elinor Pinczes.  We worked together to find all the possible ways of dividing 36 or 24 groups of ants.  We tried to work systematically to make sure we found all the possibilities and we had some great discussions about using known facts to help us find all the ways.  This also led to some great reasoning about odd and even numbers.

Miss Hooson and Mrs Fielding were very impressed with the perseverance and stamina shown whilst completing this task.

After listening to and appraising aboriginal music, we moved on to using instruments made from natural materials such as wood and our body parts to compose our own pieces in small groups. We learnt what a crotchet was and we counted in beats of 4. In our teams, we composed our piece and practised, ready to perform next week.

#Take10 challenge

Date: 10th May 2021 @ 11:25am

Today, we took part in the #Take10 challenge. The event began with a 10 minute live event with the author Anthony Horowitz, who discussed what kind of books he enjoys reading and how he got into writing books. We all then read together for 10 minutes, including the adults. We are going to try and make sure we read for 10 minutes every day as this can help improve our vocabulary, our imagination and helps with our mental health.

Elder: DT Day 1

Date: 10th May 2021 @ 7:27am

Today we began our DT journey of making pizzas. We looked at what we already knew about pizzas, including how we make them. We began by tasting pizzas and evaluating what we liked/disliked. After that, we went into Redcliffes to make our pizza sauce. We read through the pizza sauce recipe and weighed out and measured the ingredients we needed. Then, we all had a go at chopping and peeling onions and garlic. After that, we mixed together all of the other ingredients: tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, oregano, basil, brown sugar and a bay leaf. We then heated the sauce through for 20 mins and set it cool. At the end of the day, we blitzed the sauce to make it smooth.

History Day - Toys Part 2!

Date: 9th May 2021 @ 6:18pm

This afternoon we firstly completed an old and new toy sort, thinking about materials used, whether the toy was electric or not and the different kind of colours used. We then looked at our toy timeline. We looked at our example time line from Victorian toys to grandparents toys, to parents toys and finally to our toys! We tried hard to use our number knowledge to follow the years on the timeline and place each toy into the correct time period!

History Day - Toys Part 1!

Date: 9th May 2021 @ 6:11pm

Today was our History Day! We began the day by talking about our favourite toys, and creating a mind map of all the toys we could think of. We thought of lots and lots! We then thought a bit more about what our favourite toys are and why they are our favourite, discussing with our talk partner what we like about them. After that, we talked about what our favourite games are to play, and who do we play them with.

After writing about our favourite toys we then began to think a bit more about what toys were like in the past and how we can find evidence to help us understand more about these toys. We thought we could ask older people we know, we could research on the Internet, we could visit museums or we could read non-fiction books.

It was then time to get ready for our visitors! We had some time to think of different questions we could ask our visitors to collect information about their favourite toys.

Releasing our butterflies in to the wild!

Date: 9th May 2021 @ 5:20pm

Over the past 3 week Reception have been closely observing our classroom caterpillars.  We have be watching how they have grown and changed and talking about the lifecycle of the butterfly.  When the caterpillars first arrived they were tiny, so small we had to use our magnifying glasses to look at them.  Each day they have grown bigger and bigger because they have been eating the caterpillar food.  Last week the caterpillars hung upside down and made a chrysalis around their body.  At this point we carefully transferred them into out butterfly net and waited patiently for the butterflies to emerge.  Finally on Thursday morning we watched as a butterflies emerged from their chrysalis.  It was amazing!  Their wings were very wet so we had to wait for them to dry.  The we put some orange segments in the net for the butterflies to feed on.  On Friday afternoon we talked about the importance of the butterflies being free so we let them go in the garden.  They were very friendly and they enjoyed perching on the children's hands before flying off.   Have a look at some of the amazing pictures of the children holding them.

Bug Hotels!

Date: 7th May 2021 @ 7:29pm

Today in Science we created a microhabitat in the form of a bug hotel! We have linked our Reading into Writing sessions this week with our previous learning in Science and have been using our senses to complete sentence writing about hot and cold habitats. We have looked at the features of polar habitats, under the sea habitats and desert habitats. We then also looked at where various deserts are located on a World map. Before we went outside to forage for materials to make our bug hotel, we discussed what features bug hotels need to make an appropriate habitat for mini beasts. We said they need to be compact, contain different materials and have different layers. After foraging for materials we used our plastic bottles to create our very own micro bug hotels for our gardens.

Lovely Fresh Air

Date: 6th May 2021 @ 4:47pm

The Nursery children love enjoying the outdoors. It is a great place for them to learn and they can use so many skills when they access the outdoor area. This week they have been painting on cling film which has been great for their physical development, looking for worms to go in our homemade wormery and exploring number and cause and effect in the water.

Turning Negatives to Positives!

Date: 5th May 2021 @ 7:14pm

We have been busy over the past few weeks thinking about Healthy lifestyles. During DT day, we learned about making a healthy tortilla pin wheel using different ingredients; we learned about eating food in moderation and having lots of fruit and vegetables for the vitamins and minerals they give our bodies!

We also talked about having a healthy balance of work and play for our mental health, doing exercise and some mindfulness, having positive self-talk and resilience. We talked about turning the negatives into positives and how we can make sure that we appreciate and know what we are good at. For example

We have also been making the most of our outdoor area and planted some vegetable seeds. We are hoping that we get a crop of yummy carrots and delicious radishes!

National Reading Champions Quiz

Date: 4th May 2021 @ 5:18pm

Today, 4 of our Year 6 children took part in the North West regional heat of the very first National Reading Champions Quiz. The quiz aims to raise the profile of reading with pupils across the country and to test their knowledge of a wide range of books. The quiz consisted of 10 different rounds and included rounds such as villains in books, identifying a novel from the first or last line and anagrams of characters/books. Our pupils were a credit to Boundary and they showed determination and resilience throughout the morning. The quiz lasted for over 2 and a half hours and the children were fully engaged and really worked as a team to try and answer the questions. Although we didn't finish in the top 3, we did manage to answer a lot of the questions correctly and we were only 10 marks away from the school who finished in first place. We look forward to taking part in more experiences like this and with a wider range of pupils.

Samba Rhythms

Date: 4th May 2021 @ 4:35pm

Today we practised using the Samba instruments to create rhythms and played them together. We needed to keep the tempo the same and listen to each other to perform well. We then swapped instruments and played a different beat. Although the dynamics of the room were loud, the beat and tempo were consistent and we worked well as a team.
