Look who has arrived in Year 1 this week!!!

What an exciting start to December is has been in Year 1. We arrived at school on Monday morning to find a new member of Hazel and Beech Class ..... our class elves! However, these elves have not been making the right choices and they certainly don't have their always badges. Hazel Elf has been trapping superheroes in bins, climbing up Christmas trees and swinging on Christmas decorations, whilst Beech Elf has been eating Miss James' smarties and using shaving foam to draw shapes on the floor. He made such a mess that he slipped and broke his arm!!!
We have been writing about what our elves have got up to each day. When they first arrived they even sent us an email that we had to read.
I wonder what they are going to get up to tomorrow .... we are very excited to find out!

This half term's French lessons have been all about Location, Location, Location! We have learned the names of various shops and other places around town. We have learned how to ask for and give directions, as well as how to seek help and clarification if we are lost. The children excelled at translating French into English and constructing sentences.

Our Year 1&2 Children got to take part in the KS1 Blackpool Schools Athletics Festival at Stanley Park Sports centre. Our pupils got the chance to participate in all the events our KS2 Children do, when competing at the Blackpool School Games Athletics Finals.
We had a fantastic morning out of school and our children did not stop smiling through out the Festival. We definitely have some future Athletes who will be competing and representing our school when their time comes around.

Our Year 5&6 Basketball Team participated in the Blackpool Schools Youth Games Basketball Festival which took place at Blackpool Sixth College. They were coached by Blackpool Sixth Forms 1st Team Basketball Coach and Players to learn more about the sport and enhance their own skills and performance. As their training session came to an end with the 1st team coach and players, the team then got the chance to compete in a tournament against other Blackpool Schools. Our Team finished 2nd in the group with 1 win and 1 loss, which unfortunately was not enough to qualify for the final. However our team were brilliant. WELL DONE TEAM!
Exploring Shape, Space & Measure!

We started off the week by exploring the question, 'how big is my foot?' We drew around each child's foot and then used cubes to measure each one. We looked at how we could find out who had the biggest foot, and counted the cubes to find out! We have also investigated capacity this week. We used lots of different containers off all shapes and sizes with different amounts of objects in, talking about when they were full, nearly full, half full or empty! During WNRW last week we explored weight, weighing different bags of items and talking about which were heavier or lighter. We have continued to use weighing scales in different areas within Nursery this week, exploring what heavy and light feel like by using a selection of objects. By the end of the week we moved onto exploring shape. We made shape monsters using 2D shapes, and also created a shape obstacle course outside, travelling across and underneath objects to see if we could find a particular named shape at the end.
Winter - Science, Phonics, Writing and PE!!!

This week we have been learning about winter in Science. It is "one of the four seasons of the year". We know it is often "very cold in winter" so you "need to wear warm clothes". 'Sometimes it snows in winter and you can build a snowman". We used bicarbonate of soda and citric acid to create a snowstorm! We revisited, recapped and embedded our seasons learning and knowledge in PE by making seasonal tress in our warm up, writing about our winter experiment in writing and finding 'snow' words in phonics which contained different snowmen sounds.
Our Year 5&6 Indoor Athletics Team Qualify For Athletics Final!

Well done to our Year 5&6 Indoor Athletics Team who have qualified for the Blackpool Primary Schools Athletics cup final after finishing in the top 4 in the Year 5&6 North Shore Indoor Athletics Competition which took place at Stanley Park Sports Centre.
The Athletics Cup Final will be held on Tuesday 10th December. Good Luck Team!

Today the children in reception celebrated odd socks day by wearing odd sock to school. We talked about how the children are similar and different and the children made some fantastic comments. We used mirrors to look at our faces and discussed our likes and dislikes. Here are some of the comments that the children made.
"Ihave brown hair but Jazmine's is yellow. It's different to mine"
"Some people have glasses to see but I don't need them"
"Mrs Farley is taller than Mrs Clark"
"Some people have brown skin but they are still my friend because they like batman like me"
"If your different it doesn't matter. If we looked the same you wouldn't know who we was"
The children then enjoyed collaging and painting their very own odd socks!

This morning, Year 4 made our way to Aspire Academy; it was a short but wet walk! We were travelling to take part in a science lesson in the Aspire laboratories. After watching a short video that showed Steve Backshall catching crocodiles, we were set the task of testing a range of circuits that would make a bulb glow at its brightest to help locate crocodiles in the dark.
Using a range of circuits that included 1 to 4 batteries in each, we introduced a switch and reading from a Volt meter and an Ammeter, we were to record the changes in readings as we increased the cumber of cells.
We concluded that the more cells within the circuit, the greater the readings on the Volt meter and Ammeter. The difference between 1 and 2 cells within the circuit was not particularly great but between 3 and 4 cells in a circuit the speed at which the electrons passed around the circuit and the brightness of the bulb was much different - taking more power and the bulb glowed so much that it popped! We recorded our findings in a table and discussed the results in our groups and then as a whole class.
We cannot wait to continue working with Aspire and to make our next trip to see them!

Year 2 were very lucky to have Lancashire Fire Service come in and talk to the children about the importance of fire safety. The fire fighters discussed with the children what to do if they were in a fire and made the children aware of some important rules when using 999 to call for help. Next the children were excited to dress up and go through many scenarios enabling the children to show what they have learnt about fire safety.

Year 2 have spent the week making Poppy Art using different materials to show respect towards fallen soldiers. We joined the whole school for a remembrance service and also made a collage of war time newspaper articles which helped us understand the enormous scarifies soldiers made during the war. We planted a poppy in our remembrance garden to remember them.

...you may find Holly and Willow Class! On Tuesday and Wednesday, we travelled to Salisbury Woods to see what they looked like in Autumn. We noticed "lots of leaves everywhere" and they were "all different colours...orange, yellow, brown and red".
It was a bit chilly but luckily there had been no rain so the leaves were dry and crispy and "crunched" under our feet- some were even falling from the trees as we walked! "The leaves have died and are falling off the trees!" said Lucas. We collected leaves to bring back to school to make leaf rattles and leaf printing.
Guided Reading Parents Workshop

Year 2 enjoyed having their parents visit this morning to support their reading skills. Parents were given useful tips to help their children develop their reading skills at home such as predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising pieces of texts.The children did a great job showing off their superb reading skills. Remember reading as often as possible will develop your child's reading fluency and overall understanding of texts which is a key aspect of achieving end of year 2 expectations.

As part of our topic 'Rocking Rivers' we looked at the course of the River Wyre using Digimaps, an online mapping tool. The children identified the features of rivers we have already learned about, including meanders, tributaries and the river mouth. We then used the online maps to look at other rivers around the country and find out which towns and cities they flow through.

Our Year 3&4 Athletics team topped the table and took home gold and the plate shield at the latest Blackpool Schools Games Indoor Athletics Plate Finals.

Nursery rhymes play an important part in early childhood development and education, as well as being fun they help children develop social, physical and emotional skills. We have particularly concentrated on 5 nursery rhymes this week, focussing on one song each day. We started the week with 'Baa Baa Black Sheep,' where we looked at weighing different bags of objects, talking about which were heavier and lighter. We then moved on to 'Down in the Jungle,' where children looked at ordering animals by size. On Wednesday we sang 'Row, Row, Row your boat,' and made bottle cap sailing boats, talking about how we could get them to go faster! On Thursday we were lucky enough to have some of our adults join us to celebrate World Nursery Rhyme week, and we showed them everything we have been learning, including our rhyme of the day 'Incy Windy Spider.' Today we have looked at 'Two Little Dicky Birds,' making our own birds in the craft area, and using seeds and lard to make bird feeders to hang on the trees outside! We have put them in the fridge to set over the weekend, and will be hanging them out next week and keeping an eye to see it we can spot any birds eating them! Children have been practising these songs as part of their BLT for the past couple of weeks and it has really shown in their work in Nursery, we have had a jam packed, fun filled week!

The Mini-Cadets enjoyed a visit from Sgt Claire Van Deurs Goss today who conducted a talk about the use of the internet within the police and then how to keep safe online. The Mini-Cadets are going to present their learning to the rest of the children in assembly tomorrow.
Parent Healthy Cooking Workshop

This week Year 4 were joined by their adults to prepare and make a healthy pasta salad. The children were able to demonstrate the safe cutting skills they had learnt during our DT lessons. Thank you to all the adults that came and we look forward to inviting you to join us again next half term.

This week in Science the children had to design an investigation, which tested a range of materials. They had to identify which materials were insulators and conductors. The children were able to identify how to make this a fair test and record clear, accurate results. They work collaboratively with peers.

Today was national Anti-Bullying day. Our theme was 'change starts with us'. We talked about what bullying is - something that is hurtful that happens over and over again, we thought about how it might make someone feel if they were being bullied and what we could do if we saw someone being bullied. Should we be be a bystander or an upstander .... and upstander!!! Our class pledge is to be kind and helpful.

Danceathon, spots and Pudsey Bear! What a great day we had in Year 1 for children in need. We started our morning by doing our Children In Need danceathon. Children all over the country took part and we wanted to join in too. We enjoyed learning the dance, it was great fun, a way to support charity and good exercise for our bodies. In writing we wrote about Pudsey Bear. We had to make a fact poster and an opinion poster. What food do we think Pudsey bear would like to eat? What do we think Pudsey bear might like to do? These were all our opinions. Finally we ended the day with a whole school Children in Need assembly. Everyone looked different .... because we were all spotty!
There's no such thing as a Gruffalo!

Or is there? The children in Reception have been reading the Gruffalo story and learning about what he looks like.They have been singing the Gruffalo song, making play dough models, painting pictures and role playing in the Gruffalo cafe. They also wrote lists of food the Gruffalo may like to eat.

As part of Anti-Bullying week, we took part in Odd Socks Day along with the rest of the school. We started the day reading a story called 'It's Okay to be Different,' which was all about individualities and acceptance. 'It's okay to be missing a tooth, it's okay to be small, it's okay to say no to bad things, it's okay to come from a different place and it's okay to talk about feelings! It would be boring if we were all the same! We then designed our own odd socks, talking about the differences between them and how we knew they weren't a pair!

We started the day by taking part in the 'Big Morning Move.' We took part in the workout to help support 'Children in Need' and as part of our daily exercise! We then talked about why we were wearing spotty items of clothing, and how we were raising money to help make a difference to children who need support. Pudsey Bear played a big role in lots of our activities for the day, we used different materials to collage Pudsey, made bears in the Play Dough area, and even built a house for Pudsey Bear in the construction area! Alongside the rest of the school we also learnt the dance for the 'Comic Relief Danceathon,' which we all really enjoyed!

As part of Anti-Bullying Day 2019, Year 4 took part in a number of classroom activities beginning with a whole class discussion about bullying; what it is, how we can report it and how to better understand that people's differences make them unique and special. Then, we moved on to creating our own pledge as to how we could stop bullying, support those people who might feel lonely or believe they have no friends and, most importantly, how to recognise what makes us unique! #ChangeStartsWithUs #BoundaryBelieves
