Year 1 We Are All Different

Date: 8th Feb 2024 @ 3:03pm

This week we have enjoyed our three RSE lessons. Our first lesson included reading the story 'It's Okay to Be Different' by Todd Parrs. We all took part in a circle time session to discuss the story and its key themes. This story helped us understand an important message of acceptance and understanding through a fun story with some silly scenes! We celebrated our individuality through acceptance of others and self-confidence. Through our circle time we then explored how we are all different! We drew and wrote about an imaginary friend who is different to us. Some of us drew friends with different skin colours, different hair colours, friends who were a different size to us or friends who moved differently to us.

Year 2 - Arrays

Date: 7th Feb 2024 @ 12:08pm

Today we started to look at arrays and how they can be used to represent multiplication.  We used counters to make arrays by putting them into equal rows and columns.

We then wrote multiplication expressions to describe our arrays.  We found that one array can be described in two different ways.  For example, 3 x 5 and 5 x 3.  This is because, like addition, multiplication is commutative.  Which means it can be done in any order and you will reach the same total.

Year 6 - Magistrates Visit

Date: 6th Feb 2024 @ 3:45pm

Today we were visited by local magistrates who told us all about their jobs and how they play integral roles in the court system. We then took part in a mock trial, which centred around a case of online bullying. Children were given roles to play and words to read out, these included prosecution, defence, judge, victim, court usher and witnesses. The children really got a feel for what goes on in a courtroom and some of us are even considering future careers!

The cupcakes will be all different bright colours, just like Elmer. They will be sold at hometime on the school gates and also during the day for staff to purchase too.

Miss Moyes also needed to know what type of school reading books the children would enjoy, as she was going to be ordering some more.  The school council then went back to their classes to find out.

Another meeting will be held in the last week of this half term to discuss the results.

Year 1 Animal Diets

Date: 1st Feb 2024 @ 5:15pm

Today we learnt how to group animals based on what they eat. We learnt that all animals need to eat so that they can stay alive. We understood that this is because food is the main source of energy for all animals! We learnt that different animals eat different types of food and we discussed the scientific vocabulary to explain how to sort these animals into groups. We went through lots of examples together, naming the animal, discussing their diet and then identifying the diet group they belong to. Working with a partner, we then sorted a number of common animals into groups based on what they eat. We used the correct scientific vocabulary when discussing our choices and explaining our reasoning.

Year 1 Fruit Salads!

Date: 1st Feb 2024 @ 5:09pm

Today we explored fruit options to use in our healthy fruit salad. We began by talking about different fruits, our favourite fruits, fruits we don’t like and fruits we haven’t tried yet. We also discussed which of our five senses we will be using to find out more about each fruit. We decided we could use four out of five senses to investigate the fruits. We needed to smell it, touch it, look at it and finally taste it! We discussed the different words that we can use to describe taste and smell before trying each of the different fruits. We enjoyed taste testing!

Year 6 - Working Scientifically

Date: 1st Feb 2024 @ 3:05pm

In Science this week we have planned and set up an investigation into mould growth on bread. We chose to wipe hands on different slices of bread with different cleaning products on the hands. We had to have a control slice of bread where nothing at all was put on it. This is so that we can compare all the slices of bread to it at the end of the investigation. The other 4 slices of bread were:

Dirty hands

Hands cleaned with soap and water

Hands cleaned with hand sanitiser

Hands cleaned with an alcohol wipe

We will observe any changes to the bread over a 2-week period. Come back to see the conclusion to our fair test...
