Year 6 Poetry Workshop with Nathan Parker

Today Year 6 were lucky enough to have a visit from local author/poet - Nathan Parker. He spent the first part of the visit talking about his works and his inspirations for writing. The children then took part in several short activities that got them to think about emotions and rhyming words. By the end of the session, the children created a whole class poem around pets - we all had a great time with Nathan and we hope to work with him again.

As the final part of our 'Reading into Writing' journey, we have peer assessed our writing. We have been learning about stories from other cultures and this week pupils wrote their own Aborigional Dreamtime story. Today, pupils worked together to assess whether they had been successful in including all of the features from this text type.

After being visited by Hedgehog Rescue, the children had fun making hedgehog bread. They weighed out the ingredients (strong white flour, yeast, oil, water and salt) and then mixed them all in a bowl. They each had a go at kneading the dough and then after three balls of dough were moulded, using their hands, into a hedgehog shape they had great fun snipping at the dough to create the quills on the hedgehog. It was then left to rise before being baked in the oven and enjoyed by all in the afternoon!

"The prickles are called quills- I cut them with my scissors to make it look spikey" Lennox.
" The bread got bigger in the bowl before we cooked it in the oven!" Sheraa.

To finish our Animals including Humans Science unit this half term we looked at food chains. We mainly focused on looking at producers, prey and predators. We knew that predators were at the top of the chain, but we soon discovered that some predators are really at THE top and are no other animal's prey. These are called apex predators.

This week we were lucky enough to visit St Mark’s Church. We met Reverend Matthew and told him everything that we have leant about Christianity so far. Reverend Matthew then read the nativity story to us and we all joined in with different parts. He taught us about the key messages in the story and the roles of different characters. We then learnt about the advent wreath and the symbolism of the different candles. Finally we looked around the church and asked and answered lots of questions about features of the church.

Year 5 - Aspirational Scientists

As part of our learning journey in science, we have learned about Sally Ride, who became the first American woman in Space when she was part of the Challenger Shuttle crew in 1983. Pupils found out about her life, before using their literacy skills to write a biography about this amazing person. As a child, Sally Ride was a star pupil and outstanding tennis player. She has degrees in physics and English, and helped design the Challenger Shuttle's 'arm' which was used in space. After working for NASA, Sally was a professor at the University of California, wrote children's books about science, and started a school program to encourage children, especially girls, to become scientists. After her death in 2012, Sally's sister revelled that she had been in a same-sex relationship with a fellow scientist, and had sadly felt that she needed to keep it a secret for 27 years to protect her career.

Today, Year Two began celebrating Christmas by wearing Christmas jumpers and tucking into a delicious Christmas dinner. We ate whilst listening to Christmas music and enjoyed pulling our crackers to reveal a joke and a toy. It really has begun to put everyone in the Christmas spirit and we are looking forward to the KS1 disco later this week! Well done everyone for your effort raising money for Brian's House!

Amazing news coming out of Year 4 - we have won our Fylde Coast and Lancashire League for the mile Timestable World Cup and we are now through to the National finals!
The Nationals will commence over the coming days, so please support your Year 4 child in practising as much as they can to get Boundary to the top once again!

Today in Science, we continued our materials unit with another experiment. This week we had to find the best material for a boat so we decided we should conduct a float or sink experiment. We tested a range of materials by placing them and dropping them into the water before recording our results. We found that some materials float and others sank.
Year 2 Stick Transformation Project

Today, in Art Year 2 continued our Stick transformation project. Inspired by Chris Kenney and our knowledge of soldiers we began sculpting sticks into our very own soldiers. Next week, we will design our soldiers some clothes and dress them appropriately for battle. We had to demonstrate many of the characteristics including perseverance and determination and some of us even showed excellent patience and teamwork.

This week in Forest School we made gingerbread men on the fire, worked safely using sharp tools to make different objects, learned to tie different knots and built a fire. As a year group, we continued to dig out the pond so that it will be ready for Spring next year!

During Music in Year 5 we have been learning lots about the musical vocabulary and how to use it to describe the pieces of music we listen to. We have been composing on Charanga as well as on the musical score using crotchets, minims and quavers. We did a Menti quiz to see what we had learned and began to practise playing Deck the Halls for Christmas on the Glockenspiels.

We worked in small groups to create a ‘living graph’ relating to the fighting between Anglo-Saxon kings and the invading Vikings. We placed events on the graph in chronological order, and then, in discussion with our group, moved them up or down on the Y-axis based on the level of threat to the Anglo-Saxons. We then used this to draw the shape of the graph on our own axis and picked 3 key events during the period.

In today's Reading into Writing lesson, we used discussion, debate and drama to understand the emotions, thoughts and feelings experienced by two characters in the book -Tell Me No Lies. After talking about the characters and listening to each others discussions, we developed a list of vocabulary that we could use in the diaries that we are going to be writing over the next few days.
Year 3 Listening and performing in Music

In Year 3 we have been doing lots of listening and describing with our new Musical Vocabulary mats. We have discussed the key vocabulary and thought about how we can use it to describe the pieces of music that we have listened to. We have improved our use of sentence starters because we now have examples. We have started to think about our Christmas songs and have begun to learn about the musical score, treble clef and time signature. We started to play the glockenspeil to Jingle Bells!
Year 1 Musical Listening and Composing

In Year 1 we have been doing lots of listening to different types of music. We used our new Musical Listening Mats to think about the tempo, pitch and how the music made us feel. We also started composing using Chrome Music Lab and understood that different patterns and marks represent different notes and sounds. We made our own ostinato patterns which repeat. We have been playing percussion instruments in time to the music and learning the names of other common instruments.

We have been reading the story "Whatever Next!" By Jill Murphy. In the story a little bear makes a rocket out of a cardboard box and flies to the moon! We have had some super spaced themed activities including making space ships out of shapes and throwing the right number of space rocks in to a box. A favourite was making a giant planet by splatttering paint - great for working those big muscles. The chiildren also did some great mark making describing their trip to the moon.

In Nursery we have been exploring space and we thought it would be great if we could make our own planets! We put some shaving foam on a plate and then added some paint. We swirled the paint around using a stick and them gently pressed a circle on to the mixture. Then we lifted the circle up and hey presto - we had made a planet!

Reception Eco Warriors, Lennox and Kit, have been very busy ensuring we don't waste electricity in Holly and Willow classes. They check lights are switched off at lunchtime and that teachers switch plugs off (not on standby) around their screens.
If we all do a little bit - it makes a big difference !

In Science, Year 3 have been investigating what fossils are and how they were formed. We completed a carousel of activities to expand our knowledge. We used secondary sources to gather and present information, used magnifying glasses to examine fossils specimens and even made our own fossils!
Year 3- What makes a good role model?

In R.E we were exploring a wide variety of stories surrounding Prophet Muhammed. We explored which characteristics he demonstrated and how these made him role model. We created a freeze frame from the stories that pin- pointed the most important part of each. We had to explain why it was the most important section. Then we identified what characteristics, message and how he was portrayed as a role model. We then had to teach other groups what we had found.
Year 3- Dancing with charcoal!

In Art, Year Three have been exploring how to draw with charcoal. We were inspired this week by the artist Heather Hansen who mixes art with dance! We noticed that with gestural drawing we use long sweeping movements and the use of our whole body to create our masterpieces!
Year 4 - Digestive System Model

This week we used our knowledge of the digestive system to create a model. First, we looked at the start of the digestive system (the mouth). We broke up crackers with our hands then chewed one for a minute. The chewed crackers was broken down much more and had less starch in because of an enzyme called amylase in our saliva. This aids digestion. Then we use tights to model our intestine, a food bag to model our stomach, a cup to model our rectum and a hole in the cup to model the anus. We mixed up food and drink in the 'stomach' and churned it with our hands. Then we pushed the food through the 'intestine'. We could see all the liquid seeping out of the tights (this is the nutrients and water being absorbed into the body). After the food had passed through the intestines, it was stored in the 'rectum' before leaving the 'body' through the 'anus'.

On Monday morning we travelled to Blackpool Sports Centre to take part in this year's Sportshall Athletics competition. The competition saw students compete in various field and track events, such as Standing Long Jump and the 4x1 Relay.
Unfortunately we fell short of qualifying for the North schools section but, as always, our pupils represented the school with great pride and attitude, with the team scoring highly in plenty of their events.
