Year 1 Mastering Number

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 7:41pm

In our Mastery In Number sessions this week, Year 1 have been exploring ways to make 5. We have spent time learning how to use our Rekenrek correctly and investigated number bonds to 5 with this resource. Later in the week, we also used cubes to show how to work systematically. With a partner, we used STEM sentences to verbalise our findings, e.g. I have 2, you have 3, together we have 5!

Year 2- Practicing Skills

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 4:39pm

This week in Design Technology, we practised our marking out and cutting skills. We drew around an outline to give us the puppet template before carefully practising our cutting skills to make sure it looked like a puppet and had smooth edges. These skills will be important when making our final product.

Year 3 are super seamstresses!

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 2:51pm

In Design & Technology today we practised the running stitch. This was a stitch we were familiar with and therefore it was good to practise and refresh our minds. Those of us that mastered the running stitch moved on to learning the backstitch. This is in preperation for making our very own cushions!

Year 4 Rugby Super Stars

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 11:05am

Year 4 did amazing in Rugby this week! Tom (from Wigan Warriors) said that it was a tough lesson because there's some difficult footwork and passing, but we were the best year group he's ever done it with. Well done Year 4! Maybe some future rugby stars on our hands!

Year 3- Our First Royal Ballet Experience!

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 8:03am

In Year 3, we were lucky enough to have our first Royal Ballet workshop today. We learnt some new French vocabulary and ballet moves. We were accompanied by a brilliant musician to dance to. The children really enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward to the rest of the workshops.

Year 3- Why do our hands warm up when we rub them together?

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 7:57am

In Science we explore the question 'Why do our hands warm up when we rub them together?' In order to answer this question we carried out a range of activities, exploring friction. We used balloons to create friction, we watched videos, we identified how forces and friction is used in sports and finally we investigated the difference in rubbing our hands when we used rubber gloves. We discovered that friction is created when two surfaces rub together.

Year 3 Exploring Cushions!

Date: 22nd Sep 2022 @ 7:52am

In DT we explore a variety of cushions, ready to eventually make our own. We evaluated them based on their design, comfort and how well they were joined. As a class we discussed the pros and cons for each cushion and ordered them from best to worst. We will now use inspiration from these when designing and making our final pieces.

Year 5 Exploring Strong sketches

Date: 21st Sep 2022 @ 8:54pm

We explored using heavier, darker pencils and charcoal to sketch onto recylced maps this week, to continue our journey. Our aim was to make our sketches stand out against the print of the maps. We sketched mountains and animals with focus and some people really used the features of the maps to enhance their sketches.

Year 4 Queen Elizabeth II tribute

Date: 21st Sep 2022 @ 1:09pm

On Friday, we learned more about Queen Elizabeth II's love for corgis and horses. Over her lifetime, the Queen had over 60 dogs and numerous horses - her favourite being Burmese a Canadian horse. The children used numerous images showing this love for animals to create collages. We think they look fantastic!

Reception Once they were giants

Date: 20th Sep 2022 @ 8:55pm

Recption have been reading the story 'Once they were giants'.  The story is all about a little girl growing up in a supportive and loving family.  Throughout the story we discussed the different skills the little girl learns as she grows like sitting up, crawling, walking and talking.  As a group we talked about the different things we have learnt since being a baby.

"I learnt to go to the toilet and not in my nappy" Kazimir

"My mummy taught me to eat food and not throw it on the floor" Kayden

"I learnt to ride my bike" Nathanial

We talked about how all these things we had learnt were in the past and discussed what we might learn to do in the future.

"I'm going to learn to read at school" Lana-Rose

"I'm learning to write my name" Miley-Rae

"We are learning numbers at school" Alfie

"I want  to learn to drive a car like my dad" Ishaanvir

We then looked at the life of the queen and how she grew and changed over time.  We looked at pictures of her as a baby and discussed how she changed as she grew into a child, an adult and then finally an elderly lady.  We talked about all the different things she learnt to do and achieved throughout her life and then set some goals for ourselves.

Year 1 Christian Baptism

Date: 20th Sep 2022 @ 6:22pm

Today we learnt about the Christian belief that the Church community is like a family and considered why it might be important to welcome new people into the Church family. We listened to the story ‘All Are Welcome’ and discussed the different ways the characters were made welcome and how we make new children feel welcome in our classroom.

We learnt that parents ask for the child to be baptised so that it can belong to this family and develop a relationship with God. We discussed the importance of Christians making new members of the church family welcome. We then completed a task in groups to recognise and name basic artifacts and practices of a Christian baptism.

Year5 Science Acid Test

Date: 20th Sep 2022 @ 4:58pm

Today the pupils in Year 5 have been learning about acids and alkalis.  First of all we used bicarbonate of soda to neutralise an acid (white vinegar). When this happened the liquid started fizzing and bubbles of carbon dioxide were created. This tells us that a chemical reaction took place. Pupils then conducted an experiement to test the pH level of several everyday items, such as cola, vinegar and lemon juice. The pH level tells you if the substance is an acid or an alkali.

Year 4 discover Boudica

Date: 20th Sep 2022 @ 4:03pm

This week, we found out why Boudica revolted against the Romans. We also looked at the way she has been described in the past and what image we have of her. We decided that she is strong, brave and determind. We then had the opportunity to experience a Now, Press, Play session all about Boudica's revolt. We were a boy, who's father was fighting for the Romans as Boudica revolted.

Year 4 flexible partitioning

Date: 20th Sep 2022 @ 3:58pm

We have been looking at partitioning in Maths, but this week we have been looking at flexible where it is as straight forward as splitting a number using the place value chart. For example, if we partitioned 2894, we would probably do 2000+800+90+4. Flexible partitioning means that we look at numbers differently. So we could partition 2894 by doing 1000+ 1800+90+4 or 1100+1700+80+14 - there are many ways!

Year 6 Investigating how light travels

Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 8:56pm

Our lesson today focussed on understanding that light travels in straight lines. To prove this we worked in groups and were given a torch and several pieces of card with holes in them. We experimented with shining the torch through the holes to try to get the beam of light to hit a solid surface. Then we moved one of the pieces of card and this stopped the beam of light from reaching the solid surface. This is because it was blocked and could not get through the opaque material.

Year 6 Spreadsheets

Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 8:47pm

Today we began the first lesson of our spreadsheet unit in Computing. We explored how to input data into cells and how to change the size, font and colour of the text. We also learned how to add borders around cells and how to centre data. We were then intorduced to using the function button to program the spreadsheet to carry out calculations.

Year 1 Our Senses

Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 7:41pm

Today we began to explore our five senses by naming each sense and the part of the body that is to do with each sense. We then focused specifically on our sense of touch. We recapped on the different parts of the hand, including thumb, palm, skin and wrist. As a class, we then discussed what is touch? What happens when we touch something? And is it only our hands that we touch with?

‘We touch with our skin!’

‘Your sense of touch tells you if something is hot or cold.’

We talked about what is safe and unsafe to touch, completed ‘I can feel’ sheets, labeled the properties of these objects, and completed a mystery box feely activity.

Year 5 Safe Skills in Forest School

Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 4:04pm

Today was about gaining some skills in being safe around equipment, in particular, knives, axes and mallets. We cut some sticks down, used the knives and peelers to whittle them to a flat surface and decorated them as tree markers. We also made a small safe fire and cooked the harvest of pears, which were delicious. We also built dens, created our own games, found another frog and worked well as a team on our knots!

Year 5's shared writing ideas

Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 3:46pm

Today we took part in a shared writing session. We had to work as a team to devise a paragraph that would work as part of a biography for Ellen White, who was one of the England Team for the Euro's in 2022. We needed to include the features we had been learning about, including third person and past tense. We managed to manipulate some of the sentences to include fronted adverbial phrase.

Year 2- Exploring the Commonwealth

Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 3:02pm

As part of our remembrance of the Queen, Year 2 explored the commonwealth. We looked at the 56 countries that are part of the commonwealth and identified some of these places on a world map as well as exploring each of the nations different flags. Also, we discussed the role the Queen had in the commonwealth and looked at a variety of pictures of her visiting the different members. We found it interesting looking at pictures of the Queen from the time across her reign and created a collage using pictures, flags and facts to display our learning.

Year 2- Phenomenal Pointillism

Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 2:53pm

This half term, Year 2's Computing unit is to create multimedia art using the online tool Paintz. This week, we focused on Pointillism and after we had learnt that pointillism is a picture made up of lots of dots, we created our own masterpieces. Some of us decided to create rainbows and fireworks whilst others challenged themselves to create animals. We really enjoyed the session and demonstrated some excellent patience. Next week we shall be influenced by Mondrian.

Nursery Become Archaeologists!

Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 2:37pm

After reading "Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs go to School" nursery immersed themselves in all things dinosaur! We looked for dinosaur bones and fossils and one day we even found some dinosaur eggs! We waited patiently for the babies to hatch and then had great fun making up stories about the dinosaurs together. The children also learnt about shapes by creating shape dinosaurs and worked together to paint some big dinosaurs!

Nursery Take Care of the Outdoors

Date: 13th Sep 2022 @ 8:35pm

We are lucky to have a wonderful outdoor area in nursery and everyone takes pride in keeping the area neat and tidy. The children love caring for  the plants and creatures that are living in the garden and work together to keep it looking fabulous. This week the children have been busy picking up the litter that gets blown in. Using the litter pickers is a great way of developing fine motor skills! They have also been sharing the hose pipe and watering cans to keep the plants healthy and building realtionships with each other at the same time. Speaking of relationships, we found a new friend in our garden - a giant slug! We were all fasinated by the little fella and wanted to make sure he didn't go hungry. What else would you feed a slug but the carrots growing in the garden!
