Year 1 Together Time

Date: 21st Nov 2023 @ 5:51pm

Today we began to formalise the idea of addition as bringing two or more parts together to create a whole. We completed three different tasks that encouraged us to explore and focus on bringing two parts together. We used the correct mathematical language to explain, e.g. ‘3 cubes plus 5 cubes is equal to 8 cubes.’ Some of our grow ups joined us for ‘together time’ and we showed them how we use tens frames, counters, part whole models and cubes to support our learning.

Reception- Children in Need

Date: 21st Nov 2023 @ 4:39pm

Friday 17th November was Children In Need.

Children could join in and raise money for the charity by paying £1 to wear an item that was spotty.

In the afternoon the whole school came together for a special assembly to learn about how the money raised was spent and ended with everyone dancing to the popular song 'YMCA' .

Year 2- Now Press Play

Date: 21st Nov 2023 @ 4:03pm

Today, we used the Now Press Play equipment to explore bullying and teasing. The story was of a young boy who joined our school and became friends with two girls; however, one was jealous of the new attention divide and began teasing Hasaan (the new boy). We discussed as a class how some of the things Sofia did towards Hasaan were wrong and what we would have done in that situation to ensure it did not happen and we could get help.

Year 2- Together Time

Date: 21st Nov 2023 @ 3:57pm

Today, for together time we used our knowledge of number bonds to create a puzzle. We had to match the number bonds to their correct partner as well as try to get it to fit together as a triangle. We first completed number bonds to 10 before challenging ourselves to complete one using number bonds to 20. A few of us got incredibly creative and made our own puzzle using bonds to 100. We loved showing off our learning to our adults and thank them all for joining us.

Year 4 - Digestive System

Date: 20th Nov 2023 @ 8:31pm

Last week, we were introduced to the digestive system. Using our new knowledge, today we made our own digestive system to represent what it's like inside our bodies.

Year 4 - Eid Al-Fitr research

Date: 20th Nov 2023 @ 1:44pm

In RE we are learning about Islam. Today, we researched more about Eid Al-Fitr. We found out lots of information about Eid from around the classroom and then we used all the information we gathered as a table to make a Google Slide. This gave us chance to practise our digital literacy skills too.

Year 3- Children in Need

Date: 17th Nov 2023 @ 12:04pm

Today we wore our spits and stripes in order to raise money for Children in Need. We  had great fun in assemble dancing to the YMCA!

Year 5 - 5 Pillars

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 4:36pm

As part of our learning about Islam in RE, pupils in year 5 had an immersive experience using the Now Press Play equipment. In role as an alien sent to Earth, the children 'visited' a Mosque and saw people praying at the Kaaba in Mecca. During the experience pupils learned about the Qur'an and the 5 Pillars of Islam.

Year 5 - Super Solutions

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 4:00pm

This week pupils in year 5 conducted an experiment to find out which solids would make a solution when mixed with water. Solids that dissolve into a liquid are known as soluble. Solids that do not dissolve are called insoluble. Salt and sugar were soluble, whereas sand and soil were insoluble. A liquid can only hold so much of a soluble material, as all of the gaps between the particles are filled. Increasing the temperature allows the solute (liquid) to hold more.

Year 3- Chocolate rocks!

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 2:46pm

In Science, the children have been exploring the process of Sedimentary rocks forming into Metamorphic rocks. Normally, this process would take millions of years however we sped this process us by using chocolate! The children enjoyed creating the sediments, then applying heat and pressure to form their own metamorphic rock!

Year 3 Anti-bullying Day!

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 2:09pm

For anti-bullying day we wore odd socks to show that we celebrate differences. In Year 3 we focused on being an upstander not a bystander. We looked at what this meant and the ten steps we could take to achieve this. At the end of the lesson, we made a pledge on how we could be more of a upstander.

Nursery Odd Socks

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 12:23pm

Nursery celebrated everyone being different for Anti-Bullying Day. We all wore odd socks and talked about how its good to be different and we should always be kind to everyone. We designed our own odd socks and developed our fine motor skills by filling odd socks with rice.

Year 2- Roots and Shoots

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 7:13am

Yesterday, we explored using materials in different ways to make something they aren't by twisting, bending, folding, cutting, tearing and stretching. We did this to create roots and shoots from a source. We likened it to a flower with the roots going down out of a source/seed and the shoots stretching upwards towards the light. We tried to be creative and join the materials in different ways.

Year 2- What was it like for a Soldier in World War I?

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 7:10am

Today we explored the Key Question ‘What was it like for a Soldier in World War I? Each group looked at photographs and explored a different aspect of life in the war including: food, dangers, trench conditions and free time. Then, we taught each other about what we had learnt. We found it incredibly interesting learning about what they experienced and thought about how difficult it must have been.

Year 6 - Hinduism

Date: 15th Nov 2023 @ 8:56pm

Our key quesiton this half term for Hunduism is 'Is there one journey in our life or many?' Our shared human experience lesson today focussed on the key milestones humans have throughout the lives. We discussed which ,ilestones we have already had and what we might go through as we get older. We also looked at the definitions of rights, responsibilites and relationships and how these change and adapt as grow older.

Year 6 - The Haka

Date: 15th Nov 2023 @ 8:50pm

Today we began our dance unit - The Haka. We watched different performances of the Haka and discussed the history behind it. We learned that The Haka is a ceremonial Māori war dance or challenge. Haka are usually performed in a group and represent a display of a tribe's pride, strength and unity. We performed the first 15 seconds of the dance in unison and made sure that we could all follow the movements in time and synchronised. Over the weeks we will add parts to the dance until we have learnt the entire routine.

Year 3- Rocks!

Date: 15th Nov 2023 @ 8:25am

In Science, Year 3 have been looking at rocks. We looked at a range of rocks to identify the characteristics of Metamorphic, Igneous and Sedimentary rocks. We sorted them into groups and identifies similarities and differences between them.

Year 1 Number Bonds

Date: 15th Nov 2023 @ 7:21am

Today we combined our knowledge of the part-whole model and addition facts to explore number bonds within 10. We started with the whole number and broke numbers into parts; exploring how many different ways a number can be partitioned. We explored this using double sided counters, tens frames and dot patterns. We worked through different examples together, noticing that we see numbers made from dot patterns differently, exploring these patterns and discussing these different ways of thinking. We continued to look at number sentences written with the symbols in different places and talked about the commutative nature of the calculations.

Year 2 - Absorbency Investigation

Date: 14th Nov 2023 @ 4:30pm

Today, in Science, we had a problem to solve.  Mrs Jones-Boast wanted to know the best material to help mop up spills in the dinner hall.  We discussed the problem and decided that the material needed to be absorbent. We then planned our investigation, thinking about what we needed to change, what we will measure and what we needed to keep the same to ensure a fair test.  We also consolidated our maths skills by using a ruler to measure our results.  We found that the most absorbent material was felt.  The tinfoil and the cellophane were non-absorbent because they didin't absorb any liquid.

Year 4 - Storytelling through drawing

Date: 14th Nov 2023 @ 3:01pm

Today we practised the medium of charcoal. We did some mark making first, then we set scenes to draw.

Year 4 - More Reading Champions!

Date: 14th Nov 2023 @ 2:57pm

We have three more Reading Champions in Maple class this week ! Well done you three.

Year 3- Remembrance

Date: 14th Nov 2023 @ 8:49am

We reflected on Remembrance day in year 3 by making poppies to plant in our remembrance garden. On Friday we had our service and reflected on past and present conflict.

Year 1 Waterproof or Absorbent?

Date: 14th Nov 2023 @ 7:50am

Today we used what have learnt about materials, their properties and our new vocabulary to solve Ted’s emergency. We had to test the best material to make Ted an umbrella so he could stay nice and dry! We read our brief and collected the equipment needed for our test. We discussed how we were going to make it a fair test, by using the same amount of water and the same amount of time. We then worked in small groups to complete our experiment. In these groups we made our predictions, before following our method. Finally we all came back together to discuss what happened during the test? Did we correctly guess what would happen? What have we found out from doing the experiment and if we were going to do the equipment again what would you do differently?

Reception Odd Socks Day

Date: 13th Nov 2023 @ 9:13pm

Today in Reception the children have been celebrating everyones differences by wearing odd socks.  We talked about how everyone looks different, lkes different things and wears different clothes.  We discussed how being different makes us all unique.  We learnt the phrase "Everyone is different but everyone is special". The children used the different resources at the creative table to make their own odd socks.

In the afternoon we explored the importance of having kind words and actions and the characteristics of a good friend.  The children created their own faces in the style of Andy Warhol. The talked about how all people look different and have different coloured skin, har and eyes and how it is important we are kind to them regardless of this.

"You have to have kind words" Hunter

"Some people look different but we still have to be kind to them" Levi

Year 4 - Anti Bullying Week

Date: 13th Nov 2023 @ 8:52pm

Our focus this Anti-Bullying Week was : To know how bullying takes place within a group and the different roles people play.

In the morning, we took part in the BBC's Live Lesson.

Then, in the afternoon, we used resources from the Anti-Bullying Alliance's website to look at and discuss the roles that are involved in bullying. We looked at different scenarios and discussed who was playing which role and how the scenarios could be handled.

To finish the day, in our odd socks, we listened to a Now, Press, Play experience based on Anti-Bullying Week where numerous scenarios played out and we got to hear and feel how the characters were thinking and feeling.
