Year 5: Blog items

Year 5 - Delightful Databases

Date: 16th Mar 2023 @ 3:37pm

In this lesson, pupils in year 5 begun their journey learning about databases. We made our own paper-databases about animals and searched through them to answer questions. We found out that each entry in a database is called a record, and the different information that is recorded is called a field. Pupils then explored an online database and answered questions about the information they found. We learned how to navigate the database using the 'form' view to sort the records by different fields.

Year 5 - Investigating Area

Date: 16th Mar 2023 @ 3:32pm

Over the last few weeks, children in year 5 have been learning how to find the perimeter and area of rectangles and compound shapes. In this lesson, pupils had to use what they have learned to estimate the area of irregular shapes, and find the difference between their areas.

Year 5 - Science Day

Date: 10th Mar 2023 @ 4:05pm

Year 5 have had a fantastic day learning about the 1969 Moon landing, as part of National Science Day 2023.  Pupils watch actual footage of the Moon landing, watched documentary footage and read newspaper articles about the event. We had an amazing oportunity to visit the Wonder Dome, where we were taken on a guided tour of the Milky Way, and beyond, which the children loved. The children then created a space picture, using a variety of techniques including pencil sketches and a watercolour wash.

Year 5 - RSC: Sandgrown Shakespeare

Date: 9th Mar 2023 @ 9:42am

We are very proud of the Year 5 children who performed in the Sandgrown Shakespeare show at The Grand Theatre on Tuesday night- Eviee's artwork even took pride of place on the front cover of the program!

Well done to all who took part - please see the Year 5 blog for more pictures!

Year 5 - Scientific Spinners

Date: 8th Mar 2023 @ 5:17pm

This half-term, Year 5 have been studying forces. We have learned about gravity and friction and how they affect the world around us. This week the children were asked to investigate air resistance. They worked together to plan an investigation into the affect of air resistance on falling objects. Pupils decided to create 'helicopters' and see how they fell to the ground. Following a class discussion, we suggested a number of variables which would affect the rate of descent, and decided to investigate the size of the spinner - all of the other variables were kept the same. Following the investigation pupils identified that the larger the spinner, the slower the rate of descent. We concluded that this was because a larger surface area created more air resistance.

Year 5 - PGL information

Date: 6th Mar 2023 @ 8:00pm

The following information was shared with Year 5 parents/carers today about the upcoming PGL trip in July. If you need to contact Mrs. Hamilton at any time please do so at oakteacher@boundaryprimary.co.uk

Year 5 - Creepy Crawlies Welcome

Date: 27th Feb 2023 @ 8:42am

Pupils in Year 5 have completed their 'frame structure' projects. After evaluating current products, pupils designed and created their own 'bug hotel'. A frame structure was created before pupils added sides and tubes for insects to live in. The children then decorated their products and evaluated them.

Year 5 - Making our Designs Come to Life

Date: 27th Feb 2023 @ 8:36am

This week, pupils in year 5 began to construct their Bee Boxes. The children used various wood-working tools, including G-clamps and hacksaws, to measure, cut and build a cube frame for their structure. After cutting the wood, triangles of cardboard were used to strengthen the structure. Soon pupils will turn this frame into a 'Bee Box' or 'Bug Hotel' to place around the school grounds.

Year 5 - Holi Biscuits

Date: 21st Feb 2023 @ 4:41pm

As part of our learning in Design and Technology, we were asked to design and create a food item with cultural significance. We decided to make a sweet treat to celebrate the Hindu festival of Holi. After a discussion about food safety and taste-testing some products already on the market, we worked in small groups to prepare and bake vanilla flavoured biscuits , which we decorated with icing in bright colours.

Year 5 - 100th Day in School

Date: 21st Feb 2023 @ 4:12pm

After reading the book '365 Penguins' by Jean-Luc Fromental, pupils in Year 5 completed activities which required maths skills to organise the penguins. The first task involved arranging the penguins into equalateral triangles. By counting the penguins in the shapes, we discovered 'triangular numbers'. Pupils then discussed the patterns in the triangular number sequence and how we might be able to find others without drawing them. In the story, Dad arranges 144 penguins into a square. We then investigated which other number of penguins could be arranged in a square pattern. Again, pupils shared what they had found and discussed pattterns in the number sequence.  We were amazed to find that the sum of two adjacent triangular numbers made a square number!

YEAR 5 - Animals (including Humans): Gestation Vs Lifespan

Date: 19th Jan 2023 @ 3:01pm

In our last Science lesson, we found out the meaning of the words 'gestation' and 'lifespan'. Pupils then drew a scatter-graph of several mammals to show their gestation length against their lifespan. Pupils correctly identified that, generally, the longer an animal's gestation, the longer its lifespan, and also that the animals with the longest lifespan were large mammals, such as elephants and whales. The only animal that did not fit this generalisation was humans - we hypothesised that this is because humans have knowledge of medicine and how to stay healthy, which helps us to live longer.

Year 5 - Informal Letters

Date: 19th Jan 2023 @ 2:54pm

This week, year 5 pupils have drafted, edited and presented informal letters in the role of a character from a story. We discussed how the character of Sam, from 'My Brother is called Jessica' by John Boyle, would be feeling about the changes that are going on in his family, and how his behaviour would impact on his brother and his parents. Pupils were challenged to include all the features of a letter, whilst using a tone, grammar and sentence structure that suited a letter written to a close relative.

Year 5 - No Pen Morning

Date: 17th Jan 2023 @ 1:30pm

We had a great morning learning without pens or writing! We talked about how the music made us feel for the song 'Freedom is Coming', using the vocabulary for the listening mats. We played the glockenspiels and percussion instruments, and performed the accompaniment to the song.

In French we sang and recapped the months of the Year. We cut/stuck the months of the year in order. We spoke in french and started to put together the phrase, 'Mon Anniversaire est...' using the days and months.

Year 5 - Road Safety

Date: 13th Jan 2023 @ 2:26pm

This week has been Road Safety Week in school. After a whole school assembly on Monday, we have spent time in class discussing how we can stay safe as pedestrians, cyclists and passengers in cars. We looked at a range of real-life senarios and discussed the dangers that we could see. The biggest take-away from this week has been to think about the clothes we are wearing, particularly when it is dark, so that we can be seen by drivers.

Year 5 - Brilliant Balances

Date: 12th Jan 2023 @ 3:14pm

In PE this week pupils in year 5 were asked to create balances. Working in pairs, pupils created a simple routine of rolls and balances, which could be high or low, broad or narrow. Each performance was viewed and then children tried to improve their performances.

Year 5 - Hinduism Flashback

Date: 12th Jan 2023 @ 3:07pm

This term Year 5 are asking the question: What do Hindus learn from stories about Krishna? In this lesson, pupils reflected on previous learning about Hinduism and recalled things that they know about this popular religion. In groups, pupils had to retell the story of Rama and Sita and discuss what they knew about Ramadan - The Festival of Lights.

KS2 - Blackpool Schools Football Tournament

Date: 9th Jan 2023 @ 2:08pm

This morning our KS2 boys football team took part in the Blackpool Schools Football Tournament, which they qualified for before Christmas. The rescheduled event saw all schools from Blackpool take part in a couple of fixtures to determine who would go on to represent Blackpool at the finals on Friday.

As always, our Boundary boys put on a great show of character, determination and although they didn't qualify for the final, they came away smiling after a spirited performance.

Well done to all KS2 boys involved in today's event, you've done your school proud!

Year 5 Festive French

Date: 14th Dec 2022 @ 7:55am

Today in French we developed our dictionary skills by looking up the items of clothing that Father Christmas wears. We worked in pairs to find the vocabulary and labelled Pere Noel!

Year 5 French learning As tu un animal?

Date: 8th Dec 2022 @ 1:16pm

This half term we have been learning in French how to talk about animals. We have improved our pronunciation of the animals, asked questions, introduced the characters and said if our animals have a name. We have also learned the negative 'Je ne pas' and started to use the connective but 'mais' to explain different examples. We did some excellent listening tasks too!

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

Date: 8th Dec 2022 @ 12:14pm

Reading into Writing so far this half-term...

In Year 1 we read the story 'The Jolly Christmas Postman.' We began by sequencing the key events, discussing the characters and the meaning of key words. We then moved onto reading letters from different characters, matching the correct letter to the correct address and piecing together a mixed up letter. On 1st December our class elves arrived and brought a letter with them for us to read, but some bits were missing! We then used what we had learnt about letters to fill in the missing features. We will be writing our own letters this week.

In Year 2, we are in the process of writing our own Christmas story inspired by the 2019 John Lewis advert featuring Edgar the dragon. Throughout the journey, we have read a range of Christmas stories and watched a selection of different Christmas adverts to explore how they tell a story through videos. We have now planned out our story and are looking forward to writing them up.

In Year Three we have been exploring shape poems surrounding the theme of Christmas. We have focused on using alliteration, similes and metaphors to create an imaginative description.

In Year 4, we have been working on our play script journey. To begin with, we read a variety of play scripts to identify their features. We then went on to do some drama and act out some of the scenes that we read. We are going to be basing our final pieces on the Boudicca Revolt which is what we learnt about last half term.

In Year 5 we have been learning about stories from other cultures. We read and analysed stories from the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and then created a list of features particular to that type of story. 'The Dreamtime' is the Aboriginal people's creation stories, they usually explain how the world came to be, and how animals were created. We planned, drafted and edited our own Dreamtime story, before publishing our final piece of writing. After writing our final version, we peer-assessed our texts by discussing what we had written with a partner.

In Year 6 we have spent time exploring, planning and writing crime stories. We looked at several full stories at the start of the journey and began pulling out features of crime stories. Then we worked together to generate as much vocabulary as possible relating to the genre so that we would have a bank of high quality words to choose from when we wrote our own stories. We had fun writing our stories and typing them up at the end as a finished piece.

Year 5 Peer Assessment

Date: 6th Dec 2022 @ 12:34pm

As the final part of our 'Reading into Writing' journey, we have peer assessed our writing. We have been learning about stories from other cultures and this week pupils wrote their own Aborigional Dreamtime story. Today, pupils worked together to assess whether they had been successful in including all of the features from this text type.

Year 5 - Aspirational Scientists

Date: 5th Dec 2022 @ 4:21pm

As part of our learning journey in science, we have learned about Sally Ride, who became the first American woman in Space when she was part of the Challenger Shuttle crew in 1983. Pupils found out about her life, before using their literacy skills to write a biography about this amazing person. As a child, Sally Ride was a star pupil and outstanding tennis player. She has degrees in physics and English, and helped design the Challenger Shuttle's 'arm' which was used in space. After working for NASA, Sally was a professor at the University of California, wrote children's books about science, and started a school program to encourage children, especially girls, to become scientists. After her death in 2012, Sally's sister revelled that she had been in a same-sex relationship with a fellow scientist, and had sadly felt that she needed to keep it a secret for 27 years to protect her career.

Year 5 Musical Learning

Date: 2nd Dec 2022 @ 1:33pm

During Music in Year 5 we have been learning lots about the musical vocabulary and how to use it to describe the pieces of music we listen to. We have been composing on Charanga as well as on the musical score using crotchets, minims and quavers. We did a Menti quiz to see what we had learned and began to practise playing Deck the Halls for Christmas on the Glockenspiels.
