Year 6 WOW - Charles Darwin

Date: 14th Apr 2021 @ 3:49pm

This morning, we began our topic on Evolution with a lesson on understanding evolution in finches. We learned about Darwin and his travels on the HMS Beagle, which took him to the Galapagos Islands. We then took part in an activity that helped us understand how differences in the beaks of finches determined which insects/seeds/fruit they eat.

It was a lot of fun but also quite frustrating trying to pick items up with pegs and tweezers!!

New Friends

Date: 13th Apr 2021 @ 9:37pm

We have had a lovely start to the new term as we have welcomed some new children to nursery! They are all enjoying exploring the nursery and today they spent the afternoon having lots of fun in the outdoor area. We are really looking forward to getting to know everyone properly and having some super adventures together!

Fee, Fie, Foe, Fum! There's a lot of planting to be done!

Date: 13th Apr 2021 @ 5:12pm

Today in Recepetion a mystery letter delivered to the classroom.  The children were so excited to see who it was from.  The giant in the sky had sent us some magical beans and set us an important task of growing a beanstalk, just like the one in Jack's garden.  As a group we talked about the different things a plant needs to grow big and healthy including; water, sunlight and nutrients from the soil.

Parts of the Plant!

Date: 12th Apr 2021 @ 4:52pm

We started this half term by learning about the different parts of the plant. We went outside and dissected some carnations and dandelions to find the stem, leaves, root and flower and talked about the different jobs that each of them did.

Oceans of the World

Date: 1st Apr 2021 @ 7:07pm

Today in Geography we used atlases to firstly locate the 7 continents of the world, and then the 5 oceans. We enjoyed using the atlases and we are becoming very good at locating the continents on the world map! We also enjoyed listening to our continents song before labelling the oceans on our individual maps, and taking part in a short oceans quiz!

“Oceans are salt water.”

“The Pacific Ocean is the biggest ocean in the world!”

“Lots of animals live in the ocean.”

“Pacific means peaceful.”

Addition Hunt!

Date: 1st Apr 2021 @ 6:56pm

This week in Maths we completed an addition hunt! We were tasked with finding and answering 10 differentiated addition sums. The sums were spread around each Year 1 classroom and our outdoors area and some were tricky to find! We had to find all 10 sums with a certain colour dot on the outside. We then had to answer them correctly using resources or mental methods. Each class had a ‘base’ set up so that we could return there and use Numicon, cubes, number lines or hundred squares to work out each sum. We all had a great afternoon, filled with lots of addition! We then returned to our classroom and checked our answers.

ABBA and Elton John

Date: 1st Apr 2021 @ 2:23pm

Year 4 have had a great afternoon using their knowledge of music to organise the differences and similarities between ABBA and Elton John's music careers and lives.

The Day The Pegs Went For a Swim!

Date: 1st Apr 2021 @ 12:49pm

We had a lovely last day of term. The children enjoyed making some Easter crafts, worked together to make to a giant dotty picture and looked for surprises hidden in some Easter eggs! They also found a box of pegs that went staright in to the water tray! So we set up a washing line for them to put the pegs on!

Invasion Games and Ball Skills in Year Five.

Date: 31st Mar 2021 @ 4:49pm

Year Five enjoyed a coaching session with Alan Williams this week which had a focus on invasion games and ball skills. The children had to work well together as a team and focus on what the opposing team were doing. Everyone enjoyed the session!

The Wonders of the Human Body!

Date: 31st Mar 2021 @ 3:49pm

During our guided reading session, we were reading the book 'A Body Dictionary'. We loved learning all the amazing facts about the human body. Our favourite was ' We have about 5 litres of blood in our bodies- that is enough to fill about 15 drink cans.'

We were very intrigued to find out how much 5 litres was so after the session we decided to investigate what we could fill with 5 litres. We used a litre water bottle and filled a tub with water to represent blood. We couldn't believe that we had that much blood in our bodies! We tried to lift the tub of water and it was so heavy!

Child Initiated Writing

Date: 31st Mar 2021 @ 2:10pm

Today we have been talking about how we celebrate Easter.  The children enjoyed chatting with one another explaining all the lovely things they do with their families and why we celebrate Easter with our families.

"I go on a Easter egg hunt in my garden" Harley-May

"The Easter Bunny comes to my house and bring me chocolate eggs" Arthur

"Jesus dies on the cross and came back to life" Lyra-Rose

"I decorate all my house with my mummy" Ella-Rose.

The children then enjoyed making their own Easter cards at the creative table and writing their own messages to their family and friends.  Have a look at our super writing

PacMan PE session with Mr. Williams

Date: 31st Mar 2021 @ 1:59pm

Mr Williams came to school and we enjoyed a sunny morning of outdoor sports. We increased our heart rates and got warm doing lots of running, including 'everybody's on tig' and 'Pacman' which included people tigging each other by throwing a bib, then making a bridge with our body. All of this exercise contributed to our 'Road to Tokyo' goal for Boundary!

We have also been doing the Boundary Mile everyday to get us closer to the Olympics in Tokyo!

Houses through History

Date: 31st Mar 2021 @ 1:56pm

We have been learning about how houses have changed throughout history from the Anglo Saxon period to the Modern Day. We talked about the changes in the use of materials and how the Great Fire of London affected the building rules. We discussed how in the olden days, toilets were outside, but in modern times we have them inside our hosue. We have looked a range of sources and pictures to investigate changes over times, including maps which showed the changing layouts of the towns.

Marvellous Maths

Date: 31st Mar 2021 @ 11:11am

This week in Reception the children have been busy practicing counting on and back using a number line.  They children have been using number cards to create their own calculations.  They then used the number line to help them work out how answers.  The children then recorded their work on a white.

"If your adding the number gets bigger"  Mia

"Taking away means it's getting less" Arthur

Adding Fractions

Date: 31st Mar 2021 @ 8:07am

Year 5 continued their fractions journey by learning how to add fractions with different denominators. We recapped on how to find a common denominator and then worked as a class to create a success criteria for adding fractions. After practising the skill by completing fluency questions, we solved some more complex reasoning and problem solving challenges.

The Vicious Vikings...Or were they?

Date: 30th Mar 2021 @ 5:01pm

In today's History lesson, we looked at the opinions we have on the Vikings and whether it's a true representation of them. We learnt that many of the perceptions we have of them is a result of primary/secondary sources written from the viewpoint of their enemies; they have a biased opinion. The Vikings didn't document much so we can't be certain of what they were really like. We then looked at a 'Living Graph' where we studied the times that the Vikings were the most powerful and when they ruled most of Britain. It was interesting to see how the Anglo-Saxons fought tirelessly to keep hold of the throne/power in particular parts of Britain - mainly Wessex. This came to an end when the Normans took power in 1066 from the Battle of Hastings.

Gross Motor Fun

Date: 30th Mar 2021 @ 4:36pm

We enjoyed the beautiful sunshine today and devloped our gross motor skills. We kicked, threw and caught balls, climbed up and slid down the slide and became very inventive with the hoops!

Design and Technology week!

Date: 30th Mar 2021 @ 10:55am

During the week commencing 26th April 2021, Boundary is having a Design and Technology week. Every child in school will take part in our food themed week which will be based on an opening ceremony buffet party for the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

The children will focus not only on making their food look appealing to eat, design it, then make it themselves, but they will also be looking at the NHS's Eat Well Guide and finding ways to make their foods part of a balanced diet.

As part of the D&T journey, the children will start their day with a food tasting task. Please can all parents/carers ensure that school has all up to date allergy information. Please make sure any information is updated by 12th April 2021.

We cannot wait to see your creations!

The Dot inspired Art

Date: 29th Mar 2021 @ 7:02pm

We watched this video called the Dot.

THE DOT

Then we used our painting skills from Autumn term to create different colours and textures for our dotty abstract art. We used warm and cool colours to design different sized dots using different tools and technicues. Then we constructed our group artwork!

An Afternoon of Dots

Date: 29th Mar 2021 @ 4:13pm

Things got a bit dotty onThursday afternoon when the whole school took part in an Art afternoon. Everyone watched the story “The Dot” By Peter H Reynolds and then each class looked at how they could use dots in art.

EYFS used different printing techniques to create their dotty pictures including a collaborative piece.

Year 1 produced collage dots by scrunching pieces of tissue paper to make dots and a not-a- dot.

Year 2 practised a new sculpture technique called quilling. They had to roll up individual pieces of paper and then arranged them on a dot. The results were great!

Year 3 spent the afternoon creating small dots using a variety of techniques and then put all the dots together to create a one piece of art work.

Year 4 and 6 both put their drawing and sketching skills to the test by creating a whole picture based around a dot. They had to think of images they could create using a dot as the focus.

Year 5 explored positive and negative images to make a “not-a-dot”. They showed a lot of patience and skill by carefully printing around the outside of a large dot.

The children showed some great artistic skills and produced some really super art work as you can see from the photos.

FIRE! FIRE!

Date: 29th Mar 2021 @ 3:56pm

In PSHE we have been learning about Fire Safety! We learnt 3 key rules:

1. Get out
2. Stay out
3. Call 999

We also learnt that if there is smoke in the room, it will rise. This means that if we were ever in a fire we should stay low! We practised crawling out of the room and using the back of hand to test the door temperature. We also learnt about stop, drop and roll! We are now clued up on what to do in the event of a fire and we know how to actively prevent fires in the home.

Solids, liquids and gases experiment

Date: 29th Mar 2021 @ 3:26pm

In science today the Year 4 predicted what would happen if we mixed together vinegar and baking powder into a bottle, with a balloon attached to the bottle. After the children made their predictions we headed outside to see what would happen. A chemical reaction took place between the vinegar and baking soda which created a gas which blew up the balloon! The children really enjoyed this experiment.

Dot inspired art afternoon

Date: 26th Mar 2021 @ 7:53pm

On Thursday, year 4 spent the afternoon creating their own art based on a short film called 'The Dot' by Peter H Reynolds. The children created some fantastic art that encorporated a black dot.  The children are very proud of their creations.

There Was A Green Hill Far Away.

Date: 26th Mar 2021 @ 4:51pm

This week Reception have been learning about why Christians celebrate Easter. We created a picture of the cross on the hill that Jesus was crucified on. We then placed it in our Celebrations box.

"Jesus died on the cross" Toby.

"Jesus was crucified" Leyton.
