We continued our science learning this week by investigating the life cycles of different animals. We compared the life cycle of a mammal, amphibian, bird and an insect. This year our school council meetings have been quite different to previous years due to Covid 19. We now meet virtually using 'Googlemeet' and this appears to be working really well.
The School Council have decided on which charities they want to support and have been busy coming up with ideas as to how to raise money.
Local Charities- Brian House and Donna's dream House.
National Charities- Children in Need and Comic Relief.
International Charity- Water Aid.
Money has already been raised for Children in Need and Comic Relief and, as you can see from the photos on the blog, everyone had fun participating in these events!
The School councillors have now been given the task to generate ideas of how we can continue to support our local charities, Brian House and Donna's Dream House in the final half term of the year. Watch this space!
One potato, two potato, three potato, four...
Date: 17th May 2021 @ 4:56pm
This week we have been planting potatoes in our outdoor area. We worked together, sharing the tools and helping each other dig the holes. It was a rainy day and we were very dirty when we had finished! In a few months time, with some sunshine and (more) rain, they should be ready for digging up and eating- we can't wait!

Last week we learned about Piet Mondrian and Andy Warhol who are famous artists from History. We understood that they created different types of prints, so we took inspiration from this to create our own. We designed our printing blocks, and used primary and secondary colours to create simple and then repeating patterns. It was very tricky to carve our design using straight lines into the lino block, but we persevered (with help)! We loved our final designs and thought that the lines stood out really clearly!

This week we spent some time outside and used our senses to take in the world around us! We talked about things we can do to support our mental health and how we can support each other. We listened to the birds, looked for patterns in the clouds and looked at all the different colour we could see. We also listened to a story.
During snack time we then recapped on the 5 important things we can keep doing to help us boost our mental health: Connecting with others, staying active, keeping learning, taking notice and giving of our time.

This afternoon, the children designed their own Medusa inspired hair pieces by creating card linkages, loose pivots and a card lever to create a moving hair piece. The children created their prototypes today which went really well.

On Monday, year 4 completed a practical activity looking into digestion. As digestion isn't something they can see with their own eyes the children demonstrated all the stages of digestion using crackers, bananas, water, orange juice and tights. The children loved this activity and have learnt a great deal about digestion.

In Science, we have been learning about electricity. We found out that in order for an electric current to flow around a circuit there must be no breaks in it. We were given a varity of scenario cards with different circuits on. We made predicitons as to whether these were working circuits and then tested them. After testing, we recorded our results and found out that our predictions were brilliant!

We had a bit of a stink in nursery today when we made some dinosaur poop! The children helped to measure and mix all of the ingredients and then they selected what sort of food the dinosaurs might eat. We decided they would probably have eaten some grass, leaves, nuts and seeds - can you see those things in our dinosaur poop?

At 9.50 this morning we listened to Anthony Horrowitz broadcast for the ‘Take 10’ event. We listened to him explain why he enjoys reading, where his favourite place to read is and what his favourite type of books are. At 10 o’clock it was then our turn to read! We each selected a book or comic we wanted to read and had ten minutes of independent reading. After this we then briefly discussed our favourite books and what we like about them. All the children enjoyed having the time to read and talk about books they enjoy!

This week in our Reading into Writing sessions we have been using 'and' and because to extend our sentences. We began the week by finding and building sentences containing 'and' and worked on writing the remainder of a given sentence. For example, 'I went to the shop and...'
"bought some sweets!"
"saw my friends!"
"my mum bought some milk."
We then linked our learning to the story 'Aliens Love Underpants.' We described different aliens from the story, using and to extend our sentences and connect two ideas.
We have also then began to talk about using commas! Miss Kay showed us a sentence she had written about the aliens, but it had too many 'ands!' We learnt how to use commas in a list, and we will continue our work with this.

Dinosaurs have taken over in the nursery this week! - they are eveywhere! Inside, outside, in the playdough, in the paint and even on the maths table! The children have become paleontologists and have found some dinosaur bones and skeletons and they even made their own dinosaur fossils!
Here's a dinosaur joke for you. "What do you call a dinosaur with no eyes?" "A do-you-think-he -saurs!"
Mental Health Awareness Week - Nature
Date: 12th May 2021 @ 8:25am
This week we got out into Nature and took notice of the world around us! We listened to the birds, smelled the grass and touched the grass whilst also noticing the wonder of nature. This was to help calm us down and give us som strategies to help improve our mental health. We also understood the 5 important things we can keep doing to help ourselves feel more resilient: Connecting with others, staying active, keeping learning, taking notice and giving of our time.

We have had a selection of entries from KS2 for the Boundary Voice competition, which required pupils to sing to their favourite backing track and send in a video for the virtual competition.
The singers were all brilliant and those who participated should be very proud!
We are delighted to have such talented pupils and can't wait to start the school choir again soon.
Fantastic winners have been chosen and will be put forward to the Virtual Blackpool Pop Idol 2021 - Good luck to them!

In Geography, we continued our learning on Australia. We learnt about natural and manmade landmarks. We started by finding some famous landmarks on a map of the UK and then went on to compare these to Australian landmarks.
In groups, we were given a wallet of jigsaw pieces. We had to piece these together to make 5 famous Australia landmarks. We then had names and facts to try to match up to our landmarks. Finally we located these famous attractions on a map of Australia! We just wish we could have visited these amazing places in real life!

Year Two worked hard in pairs to solve a division problem based on the story of 100 Hungry Ants by Elinor Pinczes. We worked together to find all the possible ways of dividing 36 or 24 groups of ants. We tried to work systematically to make sure we found all the possibilities and we had some great discussions about using known facts to help us find all the ways. This also led to some great reasoning about odd and even numbers.
Miss Hooson and Mrs Fielding were very impressed with the perseverance and stamina shown whilst completing this task.

Today we enjoyed learning about Anthony Horowitz's reading experiences and then had 10 minutes in class reading our own books! It was relaxing but we also practised our reading skills!
Date: 10th May 2021 @ 4:16pm
After listening to and appraising aboriginal music, we moved on to using instruments made from natural materials such as wood and our body parts to compose our own pieces in small groups. We learnt what a crotchet was and we counted in beats of 4. In our teams, we composed our piece and practised, ready to perform next week.

We have been learning about Christianity in RE this half term and the old and new testament. We had to work as a team for this task to match the words and their definitions.

Today, we took part in the #Take10 challenge. The event began with a 10 minute live event with the author Anthony Horowitz, who discussed what kind of books he enjoys reading and how he got into writing books. We all then read together for 10 minutes, including the adults. We are going to try and make sure we read for 10 minutes every day as this can help improve our vocabulary, our imagination and helps with our mental health.
