The week we have been reading the story 'Whatever Next' . It is a story about a little bear who makes his own rocket and travels to the Moon for a picnic. The children have been very busy completeing lots of different activities relating to the story including retelling it at the storytelling table, making junk model rockets, collaging and painting rockets, space theme wrtiing activities, using 2D shapes to make rockets naming their propeties and sequencing the story. The children have worked very hard.

In Reception we have been learning about space. As part of our learning the children have been using a range of different recycled boxes, tubes and materials to create their own model rockets. They had to think very carefully about the different matierals they were using looking at shape and size and decide the best way to fix and join them together. The children had some brilliant ideas and used thei problem solving skills when they were faced with challenges. Have a look at some of the rockets they made.

Some of the children have been enjoying taking part in Ballet Club on a Tuesday after school. We have been learning the importance of stretching and warming our bodies up so we down get injured. We talked about keeping our legs and arms straight and pointing our toes. We are learning the different ballet positions including first, second and third position and even learnt how to do a demi-plie.

What a great session this morning. We virtually met with five vounteers who all told us about their jobs in the art industry. We had a variety of virtual visitors from a tattoo artist, to a photographer to a painting conservator.
Year 4 - Who built the pyramids?

Who built the pyramids? A lot of people believed that it was slaves who built the pyramids. We investigated whether that is true or not! Then we used our museum loan boxes to create a tomb and explore artefacts.

We visited Aspire as part of our Light topic in Science. We looked at what white light is made up of and used a light box to try to create our own rainbows. We then learnt about the primary colours of light. We explored what happens when we shine these colours onto objects. Finally, we mixed the primary colours of light to create white light.
World Book Day 2024 - Hawthorn

What a day we had for World Book Day in Hawthorn. We had some fantastic outfits and even two T-Rex's who struggled to fit through any doors in school! A fantastic effort by all and a great day.

We took part in Eco Schools World Book Day Book Swap. We encouraged our families to donate books which they no longer use. To eliminate waste and save them going to landfill, we collected the books and organised a book swap day! All of the children were then able to choose a free book to take and keep. Everyone was delighted with their ‘new’ books.

What an exciting day we all had!
All the children looked fantastic dressing up as their favourite book characters. To celebrate reading, we read our favourite books in the Reading Den and Book Nook and drew a picture of ourselves in our costumes.

Our second Forest School session took place on World Book Day, so our focus was on stories and characters. We shared the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears before exploring the Forest School area, using our imagination to create things for characters from stories we have read. Some of the items we created included a house for Goldilocks, a comfy bed for Goldilocks to sleep in, a chocloate cake from Willy Wonka's factory and Harry Potter's wand.

What a fantastic day we have had for World Book Day 2024. All of the children made such an effort with their costumes and everyone looked amazing. To celebrate reading we drew our favourite character and talked about why we liked them. We virtually interviewed some of our favourite characters including George from George's Marvellous Medicine, Harry Potter, The Twits and The Cat in the Hat. We also participated in a class book swap and we can't wait to start reading our new titles!

Nursery Celebrate World Book Day

Wnat a fabulous World Book Day! Nursery was full of fantastic book characters including the little boy from "How to Catch a Star", Goldilocks, Paddington Bear, Where's Wally and even Zog the dragon! The children celebrated the day by making book marks, drawing a picture of their book character and sharing different books with their friends and teachers. What an amazing day.

Acorns welcomed the 3 little pigs, the big bad wolf, the Gruffalo and Mary Poppins into class today, celebrating World Book Day. We had a great time sharing stories and enjoying different activities based around our stories. We especially liked building a brick house and blowing it down!!

What a day we had for World Book Day in Rowan! We took part in a live quiz, we spoke about the outfits we had chosen and some children even swapped books with eachother. A great effort by all on some fantastic outfits.

Take a look at our amazong World Book Day costumes! We all dressed as our favourite characters today and shred our reasons for picking our characters. We joined a football quiz, joined in a great book Kahoot, read our reading books and finally we created our own story boards.
We were also lucky enough to have our very own book swap! We brought in a book that we had read and swapped it for one we were yet to explore!

What a World Book Day this has been! Year 6 have really gone above and beyond this year with their character costumes. From Harry Potter to Dr. Frankenstein, the variety has been really impressive. We have also taken part in a book and football quiz with schools around the country as well as a Book Banter session, where we discussed fun facts we have learned from non-fiction books.

We have all been looking forward to celebrating World Book Day! Alongside our assembly with Mrs Hamilton, we also completed word searches, designed reading bookmarks and shared our favourite stories/characters. We all enjoyed coming to school as our favourite book character and celebrating our love of reading.

We have read two super stories based around zoo animals "Poo in the Zoo" and "Dear Zoo". The children have been practsing their counting by feeding the animals the correct number of scoops of food, and making different length giraffe necks out of cubes. We have also explored patterns on zoo animals and painted black and orange stripes for a tiger.

This half term our Reading into Writing journey is all about instructions. Today, alongside reading and identifying imperative verbs to turn sentences into a command or instruction, we played an imperative verb game to follow imperative verbs. We worked collaboratively to practise being bossy and giving bossy commands and instructions to our partner. We were all able to identify the imperative verbs and create bossy sentences both orally and written down.

To explore our question for this lesson, ‘what is the best habitat for an animal?’ we visited our forest school area. We recalled what we already learnt about woodland habitats…
'They are covered by trees’
‘It is shady on the ground’
‘Lots of plants and animals live there’
We also recapped the names of animals and where in the woodland they might be found. Finally we looked specifically at animals that we might find on the woodland floor before going out into the forest school area to make observations to answer our key question.
We found lots of different mini beasts such as slugs, snails, wood lice, beetles and spiders. We orally discussed why this is the best habitat for each animal using the STEM sentence ‘I think it is the best habitat because …’

As part of our DT unit, Shell Structures, we have looked at nets. We carouselled around the room completing a series of activites. These included usingmagnet shapes to make shell structures, deconstructing 3D shapes, cutting and folding nets and finally we made nets to replicate real life objects! We even linked it to History and made some historical landmarks!
Acorns - Walking Through the Jungle

This week Acorns have had lots of fun exploring and learning about the jungle and wild animals. Our sensory story is Walking through the Jungle, and we have enjoyed listening to the animal noises, using animal puppets and playing with the different animals in out jungle themed tuff tray. We have also incorporated the jungle into our maths and art sessions. We really enjoyed animal printing with sponges and paints and creating our very own lions and snakes.
