At the School Council Meeting, Miss Moyes was our guest. She was here to talk about her recent enterprise visit to Highfurlong with some of the Key Stage 2 children. They explained how they had visited their shop and looked at the different items they have made to sell. Dayle explained that they had to calculate how much each item would cost to make and how much it would have to be sold at the Summer Fair in order to make a profit. The School Council were very excited and were keen to make cards, keyrings and sell mugs. We will be holding a further meeting to discuss our next steps.

Today we used Geoboards to create different 2-D shapes. We had to count the vertices and the sides to check that we had made the correct 2-D shape. We could see that, apart from squares, the same 2-D shapes can look very different but they must have shared properties - For example, all hexagons must have 6 vertices and 6 straight sides but these sides do not have to be an equal length.

This week we were lucky enough to visit St Mark’s Church in Layton. We met Reverend Matthew and told him everything that we have learnt about Christianity so far. Reverend Matthew then read the nativity story to us and we all joined in with different parts. He taught us about the key messages in the story and the roles of different characters. We then learnt about the advent wreath and the symbolism of the different candles. Finally we looked around the church and asked and answered lots of questions about features of the church.

One of Santa's elves has been visiting us recently. Today, we brought a snowman from the North Pole to visit us. Unfortunately, the snowman had melted. We discussed why he had melted and used our States of Matter knowledge from Science to work out that the classroom was too hot. Someone asked if we could take him to the freezer but we realised we couldn't because he would then freeze in the shape of the container.

Today we learnt to recognise the symbols used on an Ordnance Survey map. We learnt that these maps are used to help people find places of interest in an area. We looked at different map symbols together and worked out what each meant.
We then worked collaboratively to make a map of our local area. Together, we discussed the important features we should expect to see on our maps and then worked in pairs/small groups to create our own map of the local area. Some of us created our ‘messy map’ using loose parts and some of us made our maps by creating our own symbols on paper and placing them onto the correct part of Grange Park.
