Today we began out Computing unit on spreadsheets. The first lesson included learning about how to input data into cells and how to format cells to change the size, colour and style of text. We also began to look at how to add a formula to specific cells in order to add together numbers.

Year 5 - Masters of the Universe

Date: 17th Sep 2024 @ 4:36pm

In science today, we created a scale replica of our solar system. We found the distances of the planets from the sun in Astronomical unit (AU), and converted this to meters. 1 AU is the distance from Earth to the Sun, so on our model Earth was 1 meter from the Sun. As you can see the rocky planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are relatively close together, whereas the gas giants are further apart.

Democracy Week

Date: 17th Sep 2024 @ 3:48pm

This week, Chris Webb MP launched our School Council election campaign with a visit to to the school.

It began on Monday with a whole school assembly where Chris talked to the children about what it is like to be an MP and answered questions about his role. They also learnt about the British Value, democracy , why we vote and how to become a school councillor. The children also looked at what characteristics make a good school councillor and how they can encourage their class to vote for them.

After assembly, Miss Moyes showed Chris around the school where he had a chance to meet the children in their classrooms and speak to them about the school and their experiences. Overall, it was a very successful visit and Chris said he was "very impressed" and that we should be "proud of our school".

Voting day is Thursday 26th September.

Have you got what it takes to be part of the school council? If so, your school needs YOU!

Year 4 - Density and Viscosity

Date: 16th Sep 2024 @ 9:21pm

Some tricky new vocabulary for Year 4 today. We learned all about density (heavy) and viscosity (thickness) of liquids and did some little experiments to find out more. Oil is less dense (‘heavy’) than water, so it ‘floats’ on top of the water. The fizzy tablet makes a gas (carbon dioxide). Gases are less dense (‘heavy’) than water or oil, so it goes up through both liquid layers. When the gas goes up, it mixes some of the particles of oil and water together. Different liquids have different viscosities (thicknesses). The more viscous the liquid is, the longer it takes for the bubble to move through. In liquids that are more viscous, the particles are closer together than in less viscous liquids.

Year 3 - Ramp Investigation

Date: 16th Sep 2024 @ 9:05pm

During our Science unit, Forces and Magnets, we conducted an investigation to find out how a car would travel on different surfaces. We thought about how we would keep our investigation fair, what we would change, what we would keep the same and what we would measure.  We also made predictions before carrying out the investigation in small groups,  We recorded our results in a table and during our next Science session we will think about what the results tell us.

Year 3 - Flexible Partitioning

Date: 16th Sep 2024 @ 8:50pm

Year Three have been working on flexibly partitioning numbers to 1000.  We have been using part-part-part whole models and place value counters to help us see how the same 3-digit number can be partitioned in many different ways.

Year 2- Finding Microhabitats

Date: 15th Sep 2024 @ 7:52pm

This week, Year Two continued their learning of Living things and their habitats by going into our School grounds and forest school area to find what microhabitats we have around us and the minibeasts we could find in each habitat. We looked under logs and wooden objects, in the long grass as well as looking at the pond. We found: a ladybird, slugs, snails, woodlouse and spiders. We then discussed the conditions in each of the microhabitats that made it suitable for each of the minibeasts.

Reception- Learning to write our names.

Date: 13th Sep 2024 @ 10:16am

This week Reception have been learning to write their names.

The children keep their name card in their drawer and most of them can now recognise their name. They hold their pencil in the correct grip and write each letter, one after the other in a line, moving from left to right. Sometimes, it can be a little tricky but the teachers always encourage their progress.

Over the next few weeks, the children will continue to learn to write their name through many different play based activites.

Bubbles are never far away in nursery! They have so many benefits for the children and they absolutely love them! The chidlren have to learn to wait their turn and also learn self-control so they don't pop the bubbles when it's  not their turn! The act of blowing bubbles is a super way for the chilldren to explore the different shapes they can make with their mouths ready for making different letter sounds. Popping the bubbles encourages them to move their bodies in different ways.

We used French dictionaries to find the gender of nouns.

Year 4 - Who was Boudicca?

Date: 12th Sep 2024 @ 9:17am

Our key question this lesson was "Who was Boudicca and what image do we have of her today?" We started the lesson by recapping what we have learned about the Romans so far. Then we moved on to looking at Boudicca's life and we looked at numerous sources describing her. We used our inference skills to draw conclusion about the type of person Boudicca was and why she revolted against the Romans.

Year 2- Partitioning numbers

Date: 10th Sep 2024 @ 1:21pm

Today, we used concrete resources to partition numbers to 100. We used our previous knowledge of tens and ones to create two digit numbers and partitioned them into their tens and ones. Using the concrete resources will help us when completing it tomorrow independently.

Year 3 - DT - Investigating existing products and Market Research

Date: 9th Sep 2024 @ 9:05pm

To begin our DT journey, we looked at a range of existing pencil cases.  We thought about what material they had been made from, how they had been joined, who the user was and how they opened and closed.  We  found most of the pencil cases were made from fabric and stitched together.  Some pencil cases were made from wood or leather but these were less common.  We also conducted some market research.  We created a google form to gather data on what users would want from a pencil case.  We thought about what we would need to put in a pencil case, the shape, the design, the material and how the case would close.

We then analysed the data to see what it told us.   Our results showed that a character design is most popular. Those surveyed also wanted a soft pencil case that they could carry in their bags. We also found out that most children wanted lots of different things in their pencil case, so when we design our cases we need to make sure we have enough room and potentially a pocket for organising.

Year 1 Grouping and Sorting

We introduced names of new parts of our body and learnt where these are located. We drew around a body outline and matched widget labels to key parts of the outline, as well as adding some more of our own! Finally, we pieced together a mixed up person jigsaw and verbally told the adults in our room the body parts we could identify.
