We started our new Science unit all about Sound today by going around school on a sound walk. We took a decibels meter with us so we could measure the sound in each area and we wrote down what sounds we could hear. We discussed whether or not there would be any areas in school where there's complete silence and we all agreed that would only be likely when school is closed.

Nursery finished off a fab half term with some Easter fun! The Easter Bunny paid us a special visit and hid a golden egg in the school. The children had to follow the Easter clues to find the Golden Egg. The children were delighted to find that the Golden Egg was full of delicious chocolate! The chocolate fun didn't stop there. To finish off the week we made some tasty Easter nests!

Reception Spring Term Stay and Play
Date: 6th Apr 2023 @ 2:03pm
This week the children in Reception invited their parents in to come into our termly stay and play. It was a fantastic turn out with 25 families coming into school to support their children. The children enjoyed showing their family members around the room, demonstrating how they complete their 'mini mes' indpendently and sharing what they had been learning over past term. Thank you for your continued support over the past term. Your input at home really does make a difference to the children's learning.

During this lesson we explored the different types of weather in the United Kingdom. First, we learnt about symbols that represent different types of weather. We then answered the following questions: what is the weather like today? What has the weather been like this week? What has the weather been like this month? We discussed that in the past month it has been cold, warm, sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy and snowy! We watched how to fill out a weather diary and how we can work out the temperature. We then had a go at filling out our own weather diaries. We will update these daily throughout this week to explore the different types of weather this week brings!
‘This morning it was rainy, windy and cloudy. This afternoon there was no wind but it was still rainy and cloudy’
‘Yesterday it was sunny and warm all day!’
‘On Monday it was 14 °C and today it is 11 °C. It was warmer on Monday than it is today.’

During this lesson we focused on finding clues to describe what season we are in. We recapped on the four seasons and which clues can help us identify each. We then went outside to explore our school environment and find physical clues to identify the current season. We filled in our scavenger hunt and I spy sheets, based on what we could see outside. When we came back into the classroom, we then discussed the seasonal clues we had found.
We answered these key questions, what can we see around school that shows what season it is? and how can we use this evidence to explain which season we are in?

This week, Year Two have been making their moving vehicles based upon their initial designs. First, the children built their axles, wheels and chassis using construction kits before chosing a box of an appropriate size to use as the body of their vehicle. Next, we painted the boxes the colour we stated in our design and today we thought about the features of a moving vehicle and added them to our final masterpiece. We used a variety of materials to create windows, doors, registration plates, handles, aerials and windscreen wipers. The children have loved making their cars and cannot wait to share their learning with you.

This week in Coding Club, we used scratch.mit.edu to create a chase game. Pupils had to use the coding blocks to program a sprite to move when the arrow keys were pressed, and a second sprite to move around the screen randomly. Pupils developed the code so that when the sprites touched, a sound played and 1 was added to the player's score. The final challenge was to display a 'level-up' message and change the background when a given score was reached. All the pupils did very well when programming this game and were successful - some even developed the game further with their own ideas.

Once again, Gardening Club has begun and children have been busy planting lots of seeds.
Spring has arrived and the school grounds are starting to come alive with the Spring flowers Gardening Club planted in Autumn, (daffodils, crocus and hyacynth) and the leaves and blossom are now growing on the trees.
As it is the growing season, Gardening Club have begun to grow brocolli, tomatoes, spinach and various herbs. Hopefully, as the seeds germinate, we should have a bumper crop to enjoy in a few months time- watch this space!
"The seeds need lots of water to help them grow" Connor.
"Hopefully, it should be sunny which will make the tomatoes grow big" Sharleigh.

Today we used the Now Press Play equipment to put ourselves into Mary Seacole’s shoes and live key events of her life. We started out working in Jamaica with our mother to heal sick soldiers and help treat a soldier who has cholera. We then see Florence Nightingale is recruiting nurses for the Crimean war but we got told they don’t want us. We then decide to use our own money to travel to Crimea alone to help soldiers on the battlefield. Eventually, after returning from the war we are rewarded with a medal from Queen Victoria.

In music, we explored the composer George Frederick Handel. We started by using black pen to mind map what we found out about him. We then listened to the piece Zadok the Priest. We added information about this in different colours and used our music mat to help. We then linked this to the upcoming coronation of King Charles and created our own coronation day chant.
Reception- Holly Class Zoo Trip

At the end of the day, we were lucky enough (and brave enough) to enter the Dinosaur park where we were amazed at the different sizes and sounds of all the dinosaurs.
Take a look at how much fun we had!
"The flamingoes stand on one leg" Eliza.
"The giraffes have a long neck so they can eat the leaves off trees" Lennox.
"I saw a monkey eating a banana!" Finley.
"The sea lion show was the best- they did lots of tricks " Harper.

It's wonderful when a certain activity really engages children and you can see their skills developing. One of our nursery superstars has really enjoyed exploring the constructuion area recently and has been working really hard to develop his skills. He has gone from building simple towers, to adding features to his towers and is now able to build with a purpose in mind - this week he has made a train! Amazing work!

We have all been looking forward to our zoo trip and today was finally the day! We enjoyed exploring the zoo and seeing all the animals we had been learning about in Science this half term. We all took part in a habitat workshop, where we impressed with our habitat knowledge and explored lots of different animal parts. We used these as clues to discuss which habitat each animal was from. We then visited the sealions and watched their fantastic show before having our lunchtime break. After lunch, we visited lemur wood, wallaby walkabout and wolf ridge. Finally we spent some time in the dinosaur safari, before finally seeing the giraffes and elephants. We all had a fantastic day exploring!

Today, we continued our measures unit by exploring the capacity of a variety of containers. Before we began, we predicted how many cups we thought each container would need to reach full capacity. Then, we tested how many cups it took to fill each container to full capacity. We learnt that container F (the jug) had the largest capacity as it took 17 cups to fill but container E had the smallest capacity because it only took half a cup to fill.

This week, pupils in Year 5 have been getting to know William Shakespeare's Macbeth, and preparing to write their own script for part of the story. In this lesson, pupils improved part of a script, adding stage directions and their own dialogue. In pairs, they children acted out their scripts before making more improvements. This experience will help the children when they plan, draft and publish their own scripts next week.
