This week we completed our DT journey to make a fruit salad. Firstly, we designed our fruit salad, dicussing the ingredients and tools we would need to create our end product. We then learnt two safe ways to cut our fruit, the 'bridge' cut and the 'claw' cut. We practised these using play dough until we were ready to cut our ingredients. We designed our fruit salad using six fruits and a fresh fruit juice. We then use our skills to cut our fruit into bite size pieces to create an appealing fruit salad. It was then time to eat our lovely fresh fruit salad! Finally we evaluated our fruit salad, discussing things that had gone well and any improvements we would make next time.

Year 2's Forest School Fun Part 2
Date: 14th Jul 2022 @ 4:40pm
Another Thursday of forest school fun! Today our focus was finding mini beasts in the area and identifying them using a classification sheet. Once we had found lots of mini beasts we made them using modelling clay and drew pictures of them using felt tips. Whilst some classified bugs other children had plenty of fun in the mud whilst trying to bring worms to the surface. They made mud angels and were enjoying getting dirty jumping in and out of the mud pit. Finally, others had a nice time climbing trees under the supervision of forest school leader Claire.
Year 5 - A smashing History lesson
Date: 14th Jul 2022 @ 4:32pm
As part of our journey to Ancient Greece, we have been learning about the system of democratic government in Athens. Each year, the citizens could vote to remove a public servant if they felt they were becoming too powerful or if they were not doing a good job. A meeting was held in the agora (market), and people voted by scratching a name into a shard of broken pottery. If enough votes were cast, that individual was thrown out of Athens, or 'ostracised' for 10 years. The word 'ostracised' literally means 'judgement by shards'. We had a go at writing our own name into a shard of pottery using the Greek alphabet.

The children tried to communicate the mood through drama, costumes, choreography of body movements and emphasis of certain words in the rhyme.
They were amazing and we are so proud of them all!

What could be better than a nice cold ice cream to cool you down in this hot weather? Nursery have been doing some super imaginative play this week by serving some refreshing ice creams and ice lollies from our new Ice Cream van. This has been great for supporting the children's speech and languge development and developing their social skills as well using their wonderful imaginations to make up stories. I'll have a 99 with strawberry sauce please!

Today we learnt about the festival of Sukkot. We learnt that it is a festival which celebrates the harvest and the gathering in of the crops. We also learnt that during Sukkot Jews rememeber the years in the desert and they thank God for providing them with food and water and thank God for the harvest. To get ready for Sukkot, people start to build a sukkah. We learnt what this means and the different criteria for a sukkah. We then discussed and designed our own, before making them out of a range of different materials. We followed the criteria to ensure our sukkah had three walls, a roof made from something natural and decorations of things from the harvest. We worked successfully as a small team to plan and problem solve with our group members.

Year 6 continued their local area study of Blackpool by finding out how Blackpool has changed over the years. We used a variety of resources including videos, photographs and maps to identify changes and suggest possible reasons for these changes. We then went on to learn about the factors behind the growth and subsequent decline of Blackpool and how the town has suffered because of cheap foreign package holidays.
Year 3- Choral speaking champions!
Date: 12th Jul 2022 @ 6:00pm
Across the school children have been learning a range of poems to perform in our choral speaking competition. Year Three have spent the last few weeks rehearsing and preparing our poem 'Don't Quit' by Edgar Albert Guest. We chose this poem because of it's link to growth mindset, by sending the message that we mustn't give up when things seem challenging.
Year Three did an amazing performance today which made us become KS2 choral speaking champions!

On Friday we gave money to our chosen charity 'Water Aid'. In an assembly the school council talked about the charity and how money raised can change the lives of those who don't have clean water to drink. We passed a bucket of water all the way round the school, from Nursery to Year 6. This was to make us think of the long journeys some people make to get their water, which can often be dirty and full of disease. As a school, we raised £112.84 - we hope the money will help those less fortunate than us.

This week we had our Heritage Day. It was a fantastic day learning all about the history of Doreen Lofthouse and Fisherman's Friend. We began the day by learning all about how Fisherman's Friend are made and how they first came to be. We then tried a lot of the different flavours (some were much better than others)! Then, we created our own timelines to show the development of Fisherman's Friend over time and how Doreen Lofthouse and her charitable donations benefited the local commnity for years after her death.

Today, it was our first Forest School session with Jenna and Claire. We began the session by listening to our environment to see if we could see or hear any birds around us. We saw lots and a few different species too which we loved because in our last sessions we built bird boxes to attract them into our nature area. Then, we discussed what materials birds used to make their nests and attempted to make our own bird nests using the resources we could find including sticks, twigs, leaves, mud and grass. Finally, some of us made our own birds to take home. We are looking forward to our second session next week.

In this week's after school French club, we recapped on colours and numbers to thirty. We sang a French number song and had fun dancing like the worm on the video! Finally, we completed a colouring activity where we had to match the French numbers to a colour before colouring in the elephant. A lovely after school session.

As part of heriatge day, Year 3 answered the question 'Who are the Thompson family and more specifically who is Amanda Thompson?' We started by looking at the jounrey of the Pleasure Beach and discovered how much it has changed since it was first opened. We ordered pictures to create a timeline of the Pleasure Beach. Did you know that the Pleasure Beach was originally built on the sand dunes?
We then went on to look at the significance of the Thompson family and everything they had done for the pleasure Beach and Blackpool. We used our art skills to create an artistic fact file about Amanda Thompson. We were inspired by her achievements, especially in her achievements as a female. We found out that the role she is holds is mainly held by men!
It was very interesting learning about Amanda Thompson and her family and we are grateful for the jobs she creates in Blackpool and the tourism that she helps to bring in to our home town.

We have been reading the story Billy's Bucket.
Billy wanted only one thing for his birthday- a bucket! But this was not just any bucket - it was a magical bucket! Inside it, Billy was able to see all kinds of different sea creatures. After lots of retelling of the story and writing about it we decided to design our own bucket using the resources from the creative area. The only rule was to create a repeating pattern!
Take a look at how we designed our buckets.

We have been learning different yoga poses in our PE lessons this half term. We have been listening to calming music and learning how to control our breathing in order to get the best out of the different breathing exercises. Yoga is beneficial for our bodies but also our minds, it helps us to find a place of calm, grounds us and helps us to maintain a good mental health. We sequenced some of our different poses in order to creat our own mini meditations.

Year 6 have continued their journey through the book Unstoppable by Dan Freedman. Unstoppable is also the name of Blackpool FC Community Trust's Year 6 PSHE programme. It addresses several issues that the children may face as they continue to grow including emotional wellbeing, family dynamics, relationships and the transition to high school. This week's focus has been secrets and confidentiality and the children discussed when it is important to speak out and share.
Year 2 Heritage Day- Blackpool is Grand
Date: 5th Jul 2022 @ 8:01am
Yesterday, the whole school took part in Heritage Day celebrating significant people and events from the past in Blackpool. Year 2 explored the key question ‘How did Thomas Sergenson and Frank Matcham influence theatre in Blackpool?’ Throughout the day, we completed a range of activities comparing Blackpool Grand Theatre when it was first built to what it looks like today as well as comparing the inside to a modern theatre. We also created a timeline of historical events in Blackpool and even added our previous learning of Mary Seacole and World War One to our timeline. We loved learning about the history of the Grand Theatre.
