Year 1 Heritage Day

Date: 4th Jul 2022 @ 2:27pm

We began the day by discussing what Heritage Day actually means and what we thought we might be doing as part of our History learning. We were introduced to our influential people, ‘William Cocker’ and ‘Sir John Bickerstaffe’ and discussed the key question we will be exploring today, ‘how did William Cocker and Sir John Bickerstaffe influence Blackpool tourism by building Blackpool Tower?’ We explored Blackpool in the past by creating a timeline. This displayed when Blackpool attractions opened in chronological order. We then found our time capsule! We explored the different photos and posters inside to piece together Blackpool Towers story. Throughout the morning, we then compared present Blackpool to Blackpool in the past, created a new attraction and some of us even wrote a letter/postcard to William Cocker or Sir John Bickerstaffe.

Heritage Day 2022

Nursery/Reception: How has the seaside changed? What was it like in the past compared to now?

Year 1: How did William Cocker and Sir John Bickerstaffe influence Blackpool tourism by building Blackpool Tower?

Year 2: How did Thomas Sergenson and Frank Matcham influence theatre in Blackpool by building The Grand Theatre?

Year 3: Who are the Thompson family and more specifically who is Amanda Thompson?

Year 4: What is Fisherman’s Friend and how did Doreen Lofthouse help and continue to help the community after her passing?

Year 5: Who is Ian Holloway and what did he and Blackpool FC achieve in 2010?

Year 6: How has Basil Newby influenced the LGBT community in Blackpool?

Head to your child’s class page on the school website for more photos and information about their day. Well done everyone!

Year 6 Heritage Day - Blackpool's LGBTQ+ history

Date: 4th Jul 2022 @ 12:53pm

Today is our Blackpool Heritage Day and our topic is the history of LGBTQ+ in the resort. We were extremely privileged to have a visit from Basil Newby - a prominent name with Blackpool's gay bars and nightclubs. He talked about his life, how he had influenced the LGBTQ+ community here in Blackpool and introduced us to 2 of his team from Funny Girls, Alex and Nikki. Nikki came dressed in drag and it was a great opportunity for us all to ask questions to the whole team, which they all answered and gave us lots of information about life at Funny Girls. We would like to say a big thank you to all three of them for taking time out of their busy schedules to come and talk to us today.

Year 2 Rugby Sporting Superstars

Date: 1st Jul 2022 @ 4:49pm

Year 2 have been extremely active and busy today as we did not only complete our Sports Day but we also had a special visitor called Tom who kindly came in to teach us some Rugby skills. We began the session by looking at how to hold the ball to ensure we had a tight grip so it couldn't be easily stolen by an opponent and we practised this skill whilst playing a fun game of stuck in the mud. Then the fun continued, we learnt in Rugby you can only pass sideways or backwards and completed some races to see which team could accurately throw the ball down their team and back the quickest. Finally, we learnt how to kick a rugby ball along the floor using our laces. We played a fun game to practise our skills where we had to accurately kick to earn points for our team. Thank you Tom for an excellent session, we all enjoyed it!

Everyone tried their hardest and whilst we do not know the results quite yet- you're all winners in our eyes! Well done Year 2!

Year 2 Exploring Similarities and Differences

Date: 1st Jul 2022 @ 7:48am

This week Year Two have looked at a range of similarities and differences through our RSE lessons. In our first lesson, we explored gender stereotypes by sorting items of clothing and objects into whether we believed they were for boys, girls or everyone. By the end, everyone agreed that everyone can wear, do or play with what they would like to as long as it makes them happy. We then looked at a range of babies and thought about how we can tell what gender they were.

In our second lesson, we explored similarities and differences between male and female animals. We learnt that a mother animal can feed their young through their teats and explored that there needs to be a male and a female animal to have a baby.

In our final lesson, we looked at the human body and learnt to correctly name parts of our body including 'our private parts.' We discussed the importance of knowing the correct terminology the same way we need to be able to label our arms, legs and skull.

The children were very responsible and grown up about the conversations. Well done Year 2, Miss Hooson and Miss Duckworth were very impressed with your maturity.

Year 1 Growing and Changing

Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 7:14pm

For our second RSE lesson we explored how we grow and change. We recapped on our ground rules before our lesson and practised our feeling faces. We all remembered how to listen respecfully to one another and use our talking object on our turn. Today we read another story and discussed key questions about the events. Our story enabled us to discuss how and why babies need more help and care than older children. We tallked about lots of things we can now do that we couldn't do when we were babies. Finally, we created a lifecycle for a human being. We ordered the cards from youngest to eldest and labelled each picture.

Year 1 We Are All Different

Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 6:51pm

This week we have enjoyed our three RSE lessons. Our first lesson included reading the story 'It's Okay to Be Different' by Todd Parrs. We all took part in a circle time session to discuss the story and its key themes. This story helped us understand an important message of acceptance and understanding through a fun story with some silly scenes! We celebrated our individuality through acceptance of others and self-confidence. Through our circle time we then explored how we are all different! We drew and wrote about an imaginary friend who is different to us. Some of us drew friends with different skin colours, different hair colours, friends who were a different size to us or friends who moved differently to us.

Year 5 - Puberty Lesson

Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 5:29pm

This week we were visited by the school nurse, who conducted lessons for the boys and girls about puberty. The sessions focussed on the changes that occur in both male and female bodies as we grow up, and the importance of looking after ourselves in relation to good hygiene. All of the pupils were very mature and sensible, discussing a sensitive and potentially embarrassing subject.

Whole School Sports Week

Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 8:42am

This week children have enjoyed taking part in rugby workshops with the Wigan Warriors and netball workshops with a Lancashire coach. We were lucky to be visited by the CommonWealth Games Baton, which is on a journey to Birmingham ready for the Commonwealth Games. Pupils got a chance to find out about the significance of the baton and got to hold it. We are looking forward to all our Sports Days.

Year 1 Trust & Trusted Adults

Date: 29th Jun 2022 @ 6:55pm

Our key question for RE is 'Why might some people put their trust in God?' This half term we are learning about Judaism. Today we looked at what the word trust means and who we trust. We learnt that Jewish people believe they can have a personal relationship with God and that God continues to work in the world, affecting everything that people do. We then thought about who our trusted adults are and why we trust these people. As a class we came up with some great ideas!

'We trust people who don't lie and tell the truth even when it is not easy.' 'Trustworthy people are reliable and responsible.' 'They do what they say they are going to.'

Nursery What The Ladybird Heard At The Seaside

Date: 29th Jun 2022 @ 2:41pm

We have been reading the story "What The Ladybird Heard At The Seaside" By Julia Donaldson and have created lots of learning opportunites based on the story. We have been practsing our scissor skills by cutting the mermaids hair - it was very tough and sticky just like in the story! We have been counting spots on to ladybirds and subisiting how many spots we can see and learring all about the letter L by making ladybirds out of the letter. We have created some beautfiul transient art pictures of mermaids and made some spinning ladybirds to hang from the ceiling.

Year 3- Differences

Date: 29th Jun 2022 @ 10:43am

Year 3 looked at differences today. We began by looking at how we are all unique and what makes us different. We moved onto identifying the differences between males and females. We learnt the body parts penis, testicles, vulva, vagine and uterus. We then went on to learn about unwanted touch and the rights we have for our body. We looked the the 'PANTS' poster and ensured that we understood what it meant.

P- Privates are private

A- Always remember your body belongs to you

N- No means no

T- Talk about secrets that upset you

S- Speak up, someone can help

We finally went on to look at families and how families can differ. We looked at a range of images that represented a wide range of families and we compared to our own, identifying similarities and differences.

Year 3- Rugby Coaching

Date: 29th Jun 2022 @ 10:30am

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have some coaching from the players from Wigan Warriors. We learnt to hold a rugby ball correctly, pass, dodge and finally kick. We enjoyed learning about the importance of team work and learning more about rugby.

Year 6 - Netball coaching

Date: 29th Jun 2022 @ 7:35am

Today a netball coach from Blackpool Netball Club came to give us an hour coaching session. We began with some quick warm up drills and then moved on to looking at the different passes in netball: chest pass, shoulder pass and bounce pass. After we were comfortable with these passes we moved on to practising shotting and making sure that we adopted the correct stance to shoot accurately.

Year 6 - Healthy and unhealthy relationships

Date: 29th Jun 2022 @ 7:25am

Today we had our second RSE lesson on relationships. We discussed what values a good friend should have and why we wanted our friends to have certain qualities. We then discussed qualities that made a relationship unhealthy and what we should do if we ever felt unhappy or unsafe in a relaitonship with friends/adults.

Year 2 Continents and Oceans

Date: 27th Jun 2022 @ 4:36pm

This half term in Geography, Year 2 are learning about Continents and Oceans. Last week, we began the journey by labelling the 7 continents of the world and discussed how we can recognise each continent based on shapes, sized and our own continent- Europe. This week we continued our learning by labelling the 5 Oceans. To make it easier to recognise which Ocean was we looked at the continents they surround and which animals we would find in each Ocean. We linked our previous Geography unit where we learnt about the equator to our new learning to discuss the reasons behind the Indian Ocean being the hottest Ocean and the Arctic Ocean being the coldest.

Year 6 - Puberty

Date: 27th Jun 2022 @ 4:30pm

Today we began our RSE week by looking at the changes both boths and girls go through during puberty. This included both physical and emotional changes. We were given oppotunities to discuss anything we weren't sure about or ask questions about anything that we didn't understand. Throughout the rest of the week we will be looking at conception, communication in relationships and how to have safe/friendly online relationships.

Reception- Life Cycle of a Duck

Date: 26th Jun 2022 @ 11:07pm

Reception have been learning about the life cycle of a duck.

We were very lucky to have our own six duck eggs delivered to us from the farm. These were in an incubator and over the next ten days all the eggs hatched and we had six ducklings which we watched grow and change.

"First they there were six eggs in an incubator" Maya

"An incubator keeps the eggs warm like a mummy duck would if it had a nest" Isobel

"Then the eggs hatched- they cracked open the egg shell with their beaks and they came out" Isaac

"They were wet and needed to dry and keep warm under the heater in the cage" Harrison

"The ducklings were cheeping and running everywhere...when they got bigger we put them in the water...they could swim in the water" Mercedes
