This half-term, Year 4 have been recapping core vocabulary from Year 3 such as numbers to 20, colours, days of the week, days of the month and months of the year. We have also learnt the essential French sounds and vowels. We have recapped and practised these sounds and words through a range of methods. For example, we used a song to recap the days of the week. We are looking forward to becoming more confident with our French speaking next half-term!

Reception have been reading the story 'Owl Babies'. It is about three baby owls; Sarah, Percy and Bill who wake up one night and their mummy owl is gone. The owls waiting patiently for their mother to return. The children enjoyed taking part in lots of activities based around the stories including collaging and making our own owls, cutting out different shaped owls, playing maths games, retelling the story using different props, making different sized owls out of play dough and drawing and labelling the owl babies with the sounds we can hear. What a busy week!

This half term the children children in Reception have been beginning to learn their phase 2 letter sounds. They have been taking part in a daily phonics session learning four new sounds per week. The children have had lots of opportunities during continuous provision and adult led activities to practices recognising the graphemes, hearing the initial sound in words, orally segmenting simple words and blending sounds to read simple words. It is really important that the children have an opportunity to practice their early reading skills at home by reading their home reading book a minimun of three times per week.

Today we consolidated the skills learnt from our place value work this half term to demonstrate how to find numbers on number lines when asked key questions, e.g. what is one more/one less than __? Which numbers are greater/less than __? Which is the greatest/smallest number? As it was no pen day, we worked on pre drawn number lines, both in the classroom and outside.

This week we have been begun our grouping data unit of work. We have learnt that labelling, grouping and searching are important aspects of data and information and have begun to understand that to search data we need labels. Throughout the week we have completed different activities to describe objects using labels, match objects to groups, find objects with similar properties and compare groups of objects.
School Council-'s First Meeting- Elmer's Big Parade
Date: 17th Oct 2023 @ 5:00pm
The School Council met today for the first time since the elections took place.
They were joined by a special guest, Miss Moyes, who was there to launch Elmer's Big Parade- the School Council's first big fund raising event.
Elmer's Parade is part of the Learning Programme where each school, nursery, college or community group will adopt an Elmer for £99 and pledge to raise a minimum of £850 for Brian House Children’s Hospice. They will receive a blank Mini Elmer sculpture to decorate and there will be a Learning Programme resource pack linked to the curriculum to help teachers stimulate young minds.
These mini Elmer sculptures will accompany our full-sized Elmers on display on the trail, allowing the children and young people, and their families, the chance to see them all and admire their great work. At the end of the trail, the Mini Elmers will be returned to their creators as a permanent legacy and celebration of their involvement.
The Mini Elmers will complement and add value to the main art trail, showcasing the creativity of schools and organisations in our community.
The school council were tasked with collating ideas from their classes as to how Boundary can begin to raise £850 for Brian House. They will meet again next half term with their ideas.

Today, alongside the whole School we participated in our termly no pen morning. We began the morning by consolidating our knowledge of telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes where we played a board game with a partner having to tell the time on the square we landed; this was also brilliant for our communication and turn taking skills as well as being able to support one another. Then, we continued our fantastic morning by beginning to sew our puppets together ready to be decorated; we carefully threaded the needle and tried to do a running stitch- we had to demonstrate good perseverence and resillience but we are excited to make our final product. Check back over the coming days to see our final puppets!
Year 6 - Composing with Computers
Date: 17th Oct 2023 @ 3:50pm
For the last two lessons we have used Charanga YUMU to compose and electronically transcribe our own composition using a 5-note set treble clef stave.
We reviewed our knowledge of note values and durations and created our own compositions using a mixture of crotchets, minims, dotted minims and semibreves. Some of us were able to create an ostinato (a repeating musical phrase).

We've had a great morning in Year 6 with our first 'No Pen' morning of the year. We began with some grammar and punctuation work, where in pairs we picked different cards with tasks on and discussed them together. We then fed back to the class our answers and checked that we were right. Then we moved on to lots of oracy work - this began with asking 'would you rather...' questions to our partners. We had to give reasons for our own choices and listen carefully to our partner's resposnes. If we were picked, we had to give the response our partner gave. We finished the first session with some agree, build on, challenge statements. Again, this gave us lots of opportunities to talk to other children and give justifications for our answers. In Maths, we carried out different activities in the 2 groups, including loops card games, tarsias and orally explaining mistakes in calculations.

We were invited to take part in two fun festivals within Blackpool Zoo where each school will be given a map of the park to help them to solve the clues to find the right animals.
The children, chosen from Year 5, had a great morning with Mrs. Millar and Mr. Parsons supported by Leaders from Blackpool Sixth Form. Efficient map reading and a keen sense of time meant that we returned to the finish before the other schools – leaving us enough time to visit some of the animals not on our list (and the dinosaurs too!).

Over the last couple of weeks, Year 4 have been celebrating Black History Month in our PSHE and Reading into Writing lessons. This year, the main theme of Black History Month is 'Celebrating our Sisters.' Furthermore, our year group focus was sporting achievements. Therefore, in PSHE, we researched a range of Black British Women athletes who have made a significant impact on the sporting industry. We then used this to create our own artwork. This allowed us to discuss key words, such as diversity and culture, and emphasise the importance of appreciating similarities and differences between everyone.
In Reading into Writing, we have been working towards writing a non-chronological report about Lauren James. Firstly, we looked at some existing non-chonological reports about Lauren James before researching interesting facts about her early life and football career, including her biggest achievements. After this, we collated these facts into our own non-chronological reports.
We have found it very interesting to learn about all of the incredible Black British athletes and their amazing achivements and impact they have had on our history.
Reception- Holly Class meet the owls from SMJ Falconry
Date: 13th Oct 2023 @ 5:57pm
This week Reception had some very exciting visitors- owls!
They met Tike, Casper, Bugs and Twiglet. The owls were all very different. Tike was a burrowing owl who lives underground. Casper has huge brown eyes which can see for miles. The children enjoyed learning about the different owls. They found out what they like to eat and how they use their senses to catch their prey. We enjoyed watching the flying demonstrations and were amazed at how silent their wings were when they flew. We were lucky enough to hold Twiglet- the youngest of all the owls. His feathers look just like the bark of a tree so he can camouflage himself from predators. He had sharp talons to help him catch his food too.
We then spent the rest of the week reading the story 'The Owl Babies', painting owls, drawing owls and making owls out of play dough. We even tried to write the names of the Owl Babies using the sounds that we could hear.

Today was our final forest school session of 2023. We started by sharing one of our favourite books by Julia Donaldson, Superworm. We then searched the area to see if we could find any worms. We looked under logs and dug in the mud. We even pretended to be rain and made a pitter patter sound with our feet to try and trick the worms to the surface. We then made worm habitats using soil, leaves and bark. We are all looking forward to our next sessions in the new year.
Date: 12th Oct 2023 @ 2:51pm
Today in Science we learned that light is actually made up of the 7 colours of the rainbow. In order to actually see this, we used prisms to separate white light into the 7 colours. We also used DVDs as it is clear on their surface that light is made up of the colours of the rainbow.

Year 2 have been working hard on telling the time over the last 2 weeks. On Tuesday we consolidated our learning on telling the time 'past' the hour by working in pairs to solve a matching puzzle. We matched analogue clock images with 'past' and 'to' times. We also used stem sentences to help us read the clocks - For example, "The minute hand is pointing at the 2 so it is a ten past time" and "The minute hand is pointing at the 8 so it is a 20 to time." We then looked at the position of the hour hand to complete reading the time.
