This week we had our Heritage Day. It was a fantastic day learning all about the history of Doreen Lofthouse and Fisherman's Friend. We began the day by learning all about how Fisherman's Friend are made and how they first came to be. We then tried a lot of the different flavours (some were much better than others)! Then, we created our own timelines to show the development of Fisherman's Friend over time and how Doreen Lofthouse and her charitable donations benefited the local commnity for years after her death.

Today, it was our first Forest School session with Jenna and Claire. We began the session by listening to our environment to see if we could see or hear any birds around us. We saw lots and a few different species too which we loved because in our last sessions we built bird boxes to attract them into our nature area. Then, we discussed what materials birds used to make their nests and attempted to make our own bird nests using the resources we could find including sticks, twigs, leaves, mud and grass. Finally, some of us made our own birds to take home. We are looking forward to our second session next week.

In this week's after school French club, we recapped on colours and numbers to thirty. We sang a French number song and had fun dancing like the worm on the video! Finally, we completed a colouring activity where we had to match the French numbers to a colour before colouring in the elephant. A lovely after school session.

As part of heriatge day, Year 3 answered the question 'Who are the Thompson family and more specifically who is Amanda Thompson?' We started by looking at the jounrey of the Pleasure Beach and discovered how much it has changed since it was first opened. We ordered pictures to create a timeline of the Pleasure Beach. Did you know that the Pleasure Beach was originally built on the sand dunes?
We then went on to look at the significance of the Thompson family and everything they had done for the pleasure Beach and Blackpool. We used our art skills to create an artistic fact file about Amanda Thompson. We were inspired by her achievements, especially in her achievements as a female. We found out that the role she is holds is mainly held by men!
It was very interesting learning about Amanda Thompson and her family and we are grateful for the jobs she creates in Blackpool and the tourism that she helps to bring in to our home town.

We have been reading the story Billy's Bucket.
Billy wanted only one thing for his birthday- a bucket! But this was not just any bucket - it was a magical bucket! Inside it, Billy was able to see all kinds of different sea creatures. After lots of retelling of the story and writing about it we decided to design our own bucket using the resources from the creative area. The only rule was to create a repeating pattern!
Take a look at how we designed our buckets.

We have been learning different yoga poses in our PE lessons this half term. We have been listening to calming music and learning how to control our breathing in order to get the best out of the different breathing exercises. Yoga is beneficial for our bodies but also our minds, it helps us to find a place of calm, grounds us and helps us to maintain a good mental health. We sequenced some of our different poses in order to creat our own mini meditations.

This week's focus has been secrets and confidentiality and the children discussed when it is important to speak out and share.

We began the day by discussing what Heritage Day actually means and what we thought we might be doing as part of our History learning. We were introduced to our influential people, ‘William Cocker’ and ‘Sir John Bickerstaffe’ and discussed the key question we will be exploring today, ‘how did William Cocker and Sir John Bickerstaffe influence Blackpool tourism by building Blackpool Tower?’ We explored Blackpool in the past by creating a timeline. This displayed when Blackpool attractions opened in chronological order. We then found our time capsule! We explored the different photos and posters inside to piece together Blackpool Towers story. Throughout the morning, we then compared present Blackpool to Blackpool in the past, created a new attraction and some of us even wrote a letter/postcard to William Cocker or Sir John Bickerstaffe.

Year 6 Heritage Day - Blackpool's LGBTQ+ history
Date: 4th Jul 2022 @ 12:53pm
Today is our Blackpool Heritage Day and our topic is the history of LGBTQ+ in the resort. We were extremely privileged to have a visit from Basil Newby - a prominent name with Blackpool's gay bars and nightclubs. He talked about his life, how he had influenced the LGBTQ+ community here in Blackpool and introduced us to 2 of his team from Funny Girls, Alex and Nikki. Nikki came dressed in drag and it was a great opportunity for us all to ask questions to the whole team, which they all answered and gave us lots of information about life at Funny Girls. We would like to say a big thank you to all three of them for taking time out of their busy schedules to come and talk to us today.

As part of our school-wide Heritage Day, pupils in year 5 visited Bloomfield Road Stadium (home of Blackpool FC). We were given a tour of the ground, got to sit in the home and away changing rooms, enjoy the view from the Directors Box, and stood pitchside next to the hallowed turf. Staff from the Blackpool FC Community Trust explained about how the success of the team can impact the town, and the many different ways that the club supports the community and people of Blackpool.

Year 2 Rugby Sporting Superstars
Date: 1st Jul 2022 @ 4:49pm
Year 2 have been extremely active and busy today as we did not only complete our Sports Day but we also had a special visitor called Tom who kindly came in to teach us some Rugby skills. We began the session by looking at how to hold the ball to ensure we had a tight grip so it couldn't be easily stolen by an opponent and we practised this skill whilst playing a fun game of stuck in the mud. Then the fun continued, we learnt in Rugby you can only pass sideways or backwards and completed some races to see which team could accurately throw the ball down their team and back the quickest. Finally, we learnt how to kick a rugby ball along the floor using our laces. We played a fun game to practise our skills where we had to accurately kick to earn points for our team. Thank you Tom for an excellent session, we all enjoyed it!

Year 2 Exploring Similarities and Differences
Date: 1st Jul 2022 @ 7:48am
This week Year Two have looked at a range of similarities and differences through our RSE lessons. In our first lesson, we explored gender stereotypes by sorting items of clothing and objects into whether we believed they were for boys, girls or everyone. By the end, everyone agreed that everyone can wear, do or play with what they would like to as long as it makes them happy. We then looked at a range of babies and thought about how we can tell what gender they were.
In our second lesson, we explored similarities and differences between male and female animals. We learnt that a mother animal can feed their young through their teats and explored that there needs to be a male and a female animal to have a baby.
In our final lesson, we looked at the human body and learnt to correctly name parts of our body including 'our private parts.' We discussed the importance of knowing the correct terminology the same way we need to be able to label our arms, legs and skull.
The children were very responsible and grown up about the conversations. Well done Year 2, Miss Hooson and Miss Duckworth were very impressed with your maturity.
Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 7:14pm
For our second RSE lesson we explored how we grow and change. We recapped on our ground rules before our lesson and practised our feeling faces. We all remembered how to listen respecfully to one another and use our talking object on our turn. Today we read another story and discussed key questions about the events. Our story enabled us to discuss how and why babies need more help and care than older children. We tallked about lots of things we can now do that we couldn't do when we were babies. Finally, we created a lifecycle for a human being. We ordered the cards from youngest to eldest and labelled each picture.
Date: 30th Jun 2022 @ 6:51pm
This week we have enjoyed our three RSE lessons. Our first lesson included reading the story 'It's Okay to Be Different' by Todd Parrs. We all took part in a circle time session to discuss the story and its key themes. This story helped us understand an important message of acceptance and understanding through a fun story with some silly scenes! We celebrated our individuality through acceptance of others and self-confidence. Through our circle time we then explored how we are all different! We drew and wrote about an imaginary friend who is different to us. Some of us drew friends with different skin colours, different hair colours, friends who were a different size to us or friends who moved differently to us.
