Year 6 - faisons la tarte tatin

Date: 13th Jun 2022 @ 5:32pm

Today we completed our cooking journey on making a tarte tatin. We began the day by researching a range of existing baked apple products and made a slides presentaiton with lots of informaiton about the products, including photos, recipes, history of the product and where they originate from. Then we tasted a few of these products so that we could evaluate them for their smell, taste, appearance and texture. Next we practiced the skills needed to make a tarte tatin - this involved using a peeler and sharp knife to peel, core and slice apples using a safe method. Finally, we ended the day by making a tarte tatin in groups. The trickiest part was making the caramel - we had to keep an eye on how much heat we were adding to the sugar because we didn't want it to burn and be ruined. Our finished products looked and smelled amazing. They tasted even better!!

Reception Make Bog Babies

Date: 25th May 2022 @ 9:28pm

Reception have been a lovely story called 'The Bog Baby'.  The story is about two little girls who go for a walk in bluebell wood.  They discover a magical pond where they find a obsure little creature.  Using their net they fished it out of the pond, it's was a bog baby.  The bog baby was small and round with a spikey tail.  His body was blue and he had big googley eyes.  The children took the bog baby home and put him in a bucket.  They fed him cake crumbs and took him for walks but the bog baby got sick.  Eventually the children realised the bog baby was a wild thing who belonged in the pond so their returned him to his habitat.

Inspired by this lovely story the children used clay to make their own bog baby models.  It was important that the children used the correct techniques of 'slip, score and blend' to ensure their models didn't fall apart.  Once the clay had dried the children mixed different shades of blue using white and black paint and then painted their bog baby.  The children made their bog baby a pond habitat at the creative table by using recycled boxes, and a range of different materials.  Have a look at out amazing work!

Date: 25th May 2022 @ 4:44pm

In Music this week we have looked the unit 'Chords and Structures. This involved listening and responding to the three songs 'Wake Up', 'Down by the Riverside' and 'We Shall Overcome'. As we listened to the lyrics we realised that they all had a similar theme that linked with equality and Black Lives Matter. We were also able to compare and contrast the songs and discuss key elements such as tempo, dynamics, structure, texture etc. To finish the unit, we played the glockenspiels to the song 'Down by the Riverside' and began to improvise and compose our own music.

Year 2 Now Press Play

Today, Year Two used the Now Press Play equipment to consolidate their knowledge about plants. During the story, we were set a mission to find the best place to plant seeds to ensure they would grow into healthy vegetables. We planted our seeds in a dark cave, a sandy desert and a grassy forest. We found in the cave the plants grew along the floor in search of sunlight just like our cress we grew in the cupboard. The plants in the desert grew but were brown because they didn't have enough water. Finally, our plant in the forest grew into healthy vegetables which we then gave out to the villagers.

Pupils used wires, batteries, bulbs and buzzers to revisit their prior learning about electrical circuits, and also to familiarise themselves with new equipment, like switches and ammeters.  I am happy to say that there were a few 'lightbulb moments' and the children are now ready to start designing their own product.
