This week nursery have continued to find out about growth and change. We have been keeping a close eye on our tiny caterpillars and they're not so tiny anymore! Infact, they're getting rather big! As well as watching the caterpillars grow, the children have also been planting seeds. We started with cress seeds and will be moving on to sunflower seeds later in the week! We have been talking about looking after the seeds and that we have to make sure we keep them watered to help them grow. We have also been using different types of bricks to build the tallest bean stalk and practising matching numeral and quantity using seeds.
Year 2 Continuous line drawings

After exploring our two artists- Henri Matisse and Kittie Jones this week Year Two practiced their own drawing skills. We explored what continuous drawing meant and were shocked that we would have to focus on drawing a small object for 5 minutes continuously ensuring we added lots of detail to our drawing instead of focusing on just the outline. We practiced drawing lots of natural objects such as leaves, flowers as well as our germinating beans. Miss Duckworth and Miss Hooson were proud of the concentration and care the children took of their drawings and the children were incredibly proud of their drawings. We look forward to designing and creating our final pieces inspired by either of our artists!
Year 2 Investigating how plants grow

This half term, Year Two are exploring plants focusing on the key questions how do they grow? What do they need to grow? To investigate over time we planted some runner beans in a plastic bag with water to watch how it germinates as well as planting our own sunflower seeds. We are pleased to report after a week, our beans have begun to germinate when they have water and the right temperature. Also, most of our sunflowers have turned into seedlings and we are going to continue monitoring how much they grow each week. We are loving checking on them each morning and it's especially exciting now we can see how they grow.

During the last couple of weeks, Year 2 have been learning all about fractions. We have learnt fractions are equal parts of a whole discussing the importance of the groups being equal. To put it into a real life context we thought lots about sharing pizza and sweets equally making sure we all received the same amount. Then we put our theory into practice and used concrete resources to show halves, quarters, thirds and three quarters. During our learning we noticed two quarters is equivalent to a half. We have enjoyed our fractions unit and realised we use them lots in our everyday life!
Year 4 Our Ancient Egyptian Tomb

This week in Year 4 we were exploring what we would discover if we were to follow in the footsteps of Howard Carter into an Ancient Egyption tomb. We rearranged the classrooms and gave our explorers a torch each. They then only had a short time to explore the 'tomb' and find the hidden artifacts. Our Year 4's absolutely loved this and they did a fantastic job of describing what they had found in the short time they were in there.

In our RE journey this half term we are focussing on Islam. Last week we began by researching the 5 Pillars of Islam and what each of them meant. We then went on an 'information hunt' to find as much information as we could and share it with the rest of the class. Some fantastic teamwork and collaborative learning form our Year 4's!
Year 5 Gymnastics - Matching and Mirroring

One of Year 5's unit for PE this half-term is gymnastics where we are focusing on matching and mirroring. So far on our learning journey, we have investigated different ways to move our body and practise mirroring our partner whilst doing so. Further to this, we started to practise different types of roles across the floor. We have looked at pencil rolls, barrel roles and teddy bear rolls.
As a class, we really need to work on our balance and control of our bodies. To help improve this, we will be doing lots of short-burst activities throughout the week to prepare for the PE lessons.
Year 3 Creating a balanced argument

In Year Three we have started looking at discussion texts and began to locate for and against arguments in the text and what language gives us a clue on which viewpoint we were looking at. We looked at cut up texts and discussed how for and against points build up to make a balanced viewpoint to build the final discussion text.

Thursday 21st April saw Year 5 have a day full of learning about Science!
The first activity of the day was 'Smashing Stereotypes' hosted by Primary Futures. This event had different types of scientists giving us clues about their jobs and we had to guess what they did. There was a pharmacist, perfume-maker and a plastic developer!
For the rest of the day, we investigated the Gentoo Penguin and did lots of exciting activities about the animal and where it lives.
We then talked about why we had a Science Day and what information we had learnt.

This half term in Year 4 in our PE lessons we are focussing on Cricket. We started off with a really good warm up, working on our hand-eye coordination, teamwork and communication skills. We then moved on to a bit of throwing and catching practice in our pairs and finished off with some batting and bowling practice. A fantastic introduction to cricket and our Year 4s loved it!

Year 5 have been learning about the unit of Science, 'Living Things and their Habitats'. In this unit, we have started to look at the reproduction process of different plants. Children were fascinated to find out there are flowering plants (sexual) and non-flowering plants (asexual) plants!
To start our learning journey off, the children were given the task of dissecting a daffodil. This was in order for us to explore the plant and its different parts, and learn about the different functions of each part.
We all really enjoyed doing this practical activity and learnt so much about flowers and plants!
Year 3 Investigating how liquids affect plant growth!

In Year Three we have been investiagting what plants need in order to grow. This week we have been looking at how different liquids affect the rate in which plants will grow. We used post-it note planning to consider what varibales we could change or keep the same and then planned out our experiment. We then planted cress and will continue to pour tea, water, cola, milk and plant food and measure the plant's growth rate.
Year 3 Forest school fun strikes again !

Year Three enjoyed returning to Forest School on Thursday and were particulally excited to practice the skills they had learnt last week. We made a fire to boil water and enjoyed the dandelion tea that we made.

Year 6 Introduction to netball

Today we started our new PE topic of netball. The children have done netball in Year 5 so we had a recap on the different types of throws and passes. We looked at how to accurately use chest pass, shoulder pass and bounce pass to get the ball to our partners.

We have been reading the story "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly. One day all of the hungry caterpillar's food went missing! The children had to search for the food outside and count the pieces to make sure they had found them all. We also did a bit of problem solving and had to work out how many pieces were left to find. We had found 2 strawberries but needed 4 so we worked out we had 2 more to find!

Year 6 continued their new unit of French - Le Week-end. We recapped on how to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes before learning phrases to describe activities that can be done at the weekend. Some children completed a challenge where they had to use their learning from the last two lessons to write sentences describing what activities they do at the weekend and the time that they do them.

This week we have began our DT journey and began learning about mechanisms. Today we made levers! For this mechanism we linked our learning to the story Jack and the Beanstalk. We read and discussed the story and we were then ready to turn part of the story into a moving picture using a lever mechanism. We followed each instruction carefully and all successfully made a lever to show Jack and his beanstalk! We recapped on the importance of safety whilst using scissors and putting split pins through pieces of paper and card. We evaluated our finished product and talked about two top tips we could share with other children to make levers!

Some days are a real eclectic mix of learning in nursery! Using open ended resources means the learning can take any direction and results in lots of excitment and engagement! Just today we have explored different ways of painting, the children used tape measures to measure each other and buildings, they made potions and soup using petals and made a car wash for some muddy trucks! Another busy day!

Today we introduced weight and mass and investigated how we can measure mass. We discussed key vocabulary associated with mass, e.g. lighter, heavier and balanced. We looked at a range of examples and highlighted how we know if an item is heavier or lighter by looking at the scale. We orally stated comparison sentences for lots of examples, e.g. ‘the crab is lighter than the shell’ and ‘the shell is heavier than the crab.’ We then moved on to measuring mass using cubes. Using a range of items, we counted cubes into the balance scale to measure the mass of each object. We also then compared difference objects using the balance scales.
School Council Meeting 25th April

Today, the school councillors met to discuss a charity fundraiser for the children of Ukraine.
They considered various ideas, such as collecting loose coins, a school disco and a bring and buy sale, amongst others.
The school councillors will go back to their classes for more ideas which will be discussed at the next meeting on Tuesday 3rd May at 1.30pm.

It was Science Day last Thursday at Boundary and what a day we had! We focussed on the importance of looking after and reusing our clothes. We carried out an experiment to see which washing detergent would best clean a stained piece of fabric. We stained a t-shirt with black coffee and then tried and tested three different detergents to see which would be the most effective. We discussed how much carbon dioxide is produced throughout the fashion industry and what happens to the clothes and the microplastics they contain when they are thrown away and sent to landfill.

Year 6 had a great first lesson learning street dance moves and putting them into a short routine. All the children participated really well, even those who were initially reluctant. We look forward to learning more in the coming weeks.

This week we began our Art journey by asking the question 'What is Drawing?' First of all, the children all drew a picture of whatever they wanted and we noticed that everyone drew something different and for different reasons- some children drew something from their imagination whilst others drew real life objects. We then gathered our thoughts about what Drawing actually is and we decided it is making marks on other objects. Finally, we looked at a selection of drawings and discussed where you might use drawing in real life such as fashion designers, illustrators and architects as well as the different types of drawing from line drawing to doodles. We particularly enjoyed looking at the drawings that created the characters of Encanto!
Reception Today Is The Queen's Actual Birthday !

Today, the children in Reception decided to make birthday cards for The Queen's actual birthday. They excitedly drew pictures of The Queen and balloons and flowers and wrote messages inside, sending her their best wishes on her 96th birthday.
