Year 1: Blog items
Open Morning - Come and see how we write!
Date: 5th Nov 2019 @ 12:07pm
This morning we made a Forky from Toy Story, we wrote about Halloween and created bonfire pictures. We chose these things as they are events in Autumn and a character from a film we enjoy and we wanted to write about them. We invited family members into school for the morning to help us learn. They helped us with our writing and spelling. It was great fun!

To launch our ‘Sensational Seasons’ topic we explored the physical effects of autumn. We went on an autumn treasure hunt and found lots of wonderful natural items such as leaves, twigs and pinecones and used these natural items to make our own autumn art. We explored the colours of the leaves and mixed paint to make our own autumn colours then painted leaves to create an autumn tree for our classroom. We examined the texture of leaves and bark through wax rubbing which created a range of interesting patterns. We looked at foods which are harvested during autumn and designed our own pumpkins.

When we came back into class after lunch we had a shock .... our classrooms looked like this!!! It was 'horrible', 'dirty', 'full of rubbish' and 'a mess'. What had happened???
Miss James and Mrs Hopwood had done an experiment to show us what the world would be like if we didn't look after it and take care of it. They had dropped rubbish everywhere to show us what littering is. We then watched a video which helped us further understand the impact of littering on our environment both for us and for lots of animals too. It was horrible.
We decided we wanted to see if there was any litter in our local environment, so on our trip to the library we used our observational skills to see if we could spot any litter. We hoped we wouldn't, but we did.
Remember always put your litter in the bin. We want to live in a clean, happy environment!

No pen day was great fun! We did all our learning without using a pen. In writing we learnt about instructions. We were given a set that was all in the wrong order and our challenge was to correct it. We thought about what should go first, next, after that and what would come at the end. Maths was exciting too ... we used objects to create the part part whole method of addition. Some of us even got up to 20! In the afternoon we carried on our 'No Pen Day' learning in PSHE. We learnt about the characteristics needed to be a good friend and what friendship means. We had a go at various activities and challenges which tested our friendships skills and we were all very sucessful. A couple of children asked if we could have no pen day every week!!!Â

We were very excited about the Book Bus coming to school. There were so many books to enjoy and we all managed to find a favourite. Morgan said 'the book bus is huge and has lots of books'. Logan said ' I bought a Toy Story book to read at bed time' and Jacob said 'I've got a Roblox book because I love Roblox'

We have been learning the name each of our senses as well as the body part we use for that sense. We explored and a range of foods using our sense of smell, touch, sight, and taste and we able to think of some fantastic describing words such as spiky, sour, rough, oval and juicy.

Our first trip to the library was very exciting! We walked to @Grange dodging the puddles along the way as it was a very wet day! When we arrived at the library we couldn't wait to choose a book to look at. There were lego books, princess books, robot books and one of our favourite books 'We're going on a bear hunt". We spent some time looking at the books before Miss James read us a story. It was about a little boy who told lies - we knew this was something we should not do and if the little boy was in our class he would not have an always badge!

Children have been lucky to have the experience of a Sikh workshop. It brought the faith to life through re-enactment of traditional stories, dressing up and dancing. The hands on approach through drama created fun and enjoyment through learning about a different faith.

It was a warm sunny day for our children that enjoyed various activities on the mugga, including a relay race, egg and spoon and obstacle course. Children developed their competitive spirits in order to gain house points for their team. A great day enjoyed by all.
Why do some people get Baptised? We went and found out!
Date: 4th Jul 2019 @ 8:13pm
Why do people get baptised? ... This was a question which arose during an RE lesson, so we decided to go and find out. What better way than visit the church ourselves.
We visited St.Marks church in Layton and learnt about why a church is an important place for Christians. Reverent Hannah showed us what happens when a someone gets baptised and some of the reasons why people choose to do this. People get baptised so they can belong to Gods family and be loved, protected and cared for. We also learnt about holly communion, the giving and receiving of bread and wine, and what the word belonging means to ourselves and to Christians and why it is so important.
Lets get creative! #NorthernBalletSchool
Date: 4th Jul 2019 @ 8:04pm
Our visit from the Royal Ballet school was fantastic! Keisha, a dancer from Northern Ballet, worked with us to explore the story and characters within Puss in Boots. We took on different roles throughout the lesson and learnt how we could use our bodies and expression to convey different feelings and movements.

Well done Year 1 for a fantastic performance in your first Choral Speaking competition. You showed determination, persistence, confidence, enthusiasm and teamwork when learning to recite both poems. Diplodocus Dan was very funny; especially the part when it said 'puts bananas on your head!'
Date: 20th Jun 2019 @ 9:21am
This week we have been introduced to our new topic 'Dinosaur Planet'. We created our own small worlds, containing what we believed we would find in prehistoric times. We discussed what dinosaurs were, how we knew they were alive and the different types of dinosaurs we would have found! To finish, we created our own dinosaur, decided what it would have eaten and where it would have lived.
There were dinosaurs all over our classroom too!
