This week the pupils in year 5 began their science journey all about animals. In this lesson we talked about the human stages of life and pupils learned the meaning of gestation and life span. Pupils then drew a scatter graph plotting the gestation period against life span for certain animals. We discovered that larger animals had a longer life span and a longer gestation period compared to small animals.

Over the next few week the children are going to be learning about the season of Winter. We will be looking for for signs of winter in our outside area and making observations about what how the weather and temperature has changed. This week the children were lucky enough to enjoy the snow and take part in lots of wintery games outside including sledging down our hell and making snowmen.

Year 3- Identifying and classifying rocks!

In Year Three, we are beginning our new Science learning about Rocks. The children looked at a range of rocks to identify their qualities and discussed the different appearances. We discussed the three different rock types and made comparisons between them.
Nursery Make the Most of the Snow

Nursery had a wondeful time exploring the snow this week! We made sure we wrapped up warm and then went out to make snow angels and build mini snowmen. The children also had a great time sliding down the very slippery slide. Some of the snow began to melt and we talked about why it was starting to melt.
Year 3- Investigating insects!

In Year 3, we have been looking at Animals including Humans. In this lesson we looked at a range of insects and explored if their leg and muscle size affected how far they could jump. We then compared how animals use their muscles to move, and compared the similarities and differences between them.

This week, we looked at food chains. We learnt the word Apex Predator which means the animal at the top of the food chain. We played an online game together putting cards in the correct position depending whether they were a producer, prey or predator. Then we had a go at it ourselves.

As part of our PSHE and Science curriculum, today we invited PCSO Debby Savage to talk to Year 6 about the effects and dangers of drugs and alcohol. The children were very sensible listening to what she had to say and asked some very good questions. We discussed smoking, vaping, alcohol and illegal/legal drugs and how they can affect our bodies.
Year 5 - Excellent Evaporating

This week pupils were given the task of seperating a saltwater solution. We reminded ourselves about what a solution is and how it is different to a mixture, and pupils identified salt as the solute and water as the solvent. Pupils completed an experiment where they heated the solution to evaporate the water. This left behind crystals of pure salt. In a discussion, pupils linked this to prior learning about the water-cycle.

Year 6 have completed some great work in Science this half term. We have learned all about electricity including how to draw circuit symbols and circuit diagrams. We have worked scientifically and carried out an investigation into what happens to a bulb when you add more cells to the circuit. The children really enjoyed this topic and remembered lots of their learning when they did the end of unit assessments.
Reception- Boundary Learning Together

Reception were asked to collect things they found when they went on an Autumn walk at home.
Lucas's BLT project was amazing so it was displayed outside Miss Moyes room for the whole school and visitors to see.

This week Acorns have been exploring habitats. We have engaged in a variety of multisensory activities to develop our curiosity and understanding.
We have enjoyed our tuff tray of different environments, singing the habitat song and looking at the different animals and where they live.

Today we spent no pen morning building houses for the three little pigs! We listened to the story, talked about the different materials the pigs use and the pros and cons of each. We then collected different materials from around the classroom and our outdoor area to build our houses.

This week Acorns have been exploring night and day. We have enjoyed developing our understanding through songs and rhymes and visuals, exploring what we do at night and during the day. Some of us made choices about what we would like to do during the day.
Reception Visit Salisbury Woods

This week Reception have been on their first class trip to Salisbury Woods. We enjoyed taking part in a autumn walk through the wood looking for different signs of autumn. We found different colouredleaves, acorns, pinecorns and. conkers. We even maged to sport some squirrels and a robin.

The children loved exporing a special bag filled with Autumnal objects this week. They selected an object and then we discussed what it looked, felt and smelt like. The children came up with some fabulous words to describe the objects including spiky, crunchy and smooth. They also had to listen really carefully to their friends and take on board their ideas.

This week nursery have been talking about the changes we can see outside in the Autumn. We have been looking at different coloured leaves and talked about why they change colour and have explored these colours through painting. The children have had lots of opportunites to look at autumnal objects and have also created some fabulous leaf people.
Year 3- What is the role of the skeleton?

As part of our Science learning, we were answering the question what is the role of a skeleton? To do this we looked at a range of animal and human skeletons and made comparisons between them. The children discussed the size, shape, length, width and amount of bones. The children enjoyed discussing the similarities and differences between them. We then went on to discuss why the skeleton is important and discussed it was needed for movement, protection and support. We noted that bones such as the skull and ribs were for protection.
Year 6 - Investigating Voltage

We had a great Science lesson this week investigating the effect on a bulb of adding more cells to the circuit. We learned that the greater the number of cells, the brighter the bulb.
Year 2- Conducting a cracking experiment!

Today, we conducted an experiment to test the investigation to find out 'which material best protects an egg?' We wrapped a small egg in different materials of the same size and dropped it from a 1m height. We made sure we used the same amount of materials, dropped the egg from the same height and dropped it onto the same surface. We found the plastic tub best protected the egg from a fall as nothing happened to the egg where as the other materials cracked or completely smashed the egg.
Year 5 - Seperating Solids and Liquids

In this lesson we used our knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating. We conducted an experiment to investigate whether the mass of sand was affected when filtered. We had to analyse a solution and decide how best to separate the component parts. From the results of this lesson we were able to explain how a solution is formed.

In this lesson, pupils used universal indicator paper to find out if different substances were acid, alkali or neutral. Pupils also found out what happened when you mix an acid (vinegar) with an alkali (bicarbonate of soda). We obseverved that a gas is produced which makes it fizz. Pupils identified that this gas was carbon dioxide.

Today, the Eco Warriors had the chance to visit the Blackpool waste vehicle- Dennis to the Rescue!
They learnt about local issues, such as litter, dog fouling, beach waste and recycling. They then had the opportunity to plant a pine cone which will hopefully, over time, grow into a tree.

In this lesson we did a range of activities to develop our understanding of the human skeleton. We used small models for observational drawings, looked at x-rays to compare bones and labelled the human skeleton using secondary sources for information. We also used our Chromebooks to explore key information about the bone names.

This week in Science we took part in an investigation to find out which materials are soluble.
We first ensured that we all knew what the terms around solubilty were so we could talk scientifically during our experiment.
We then took turns to gather a material and stir it into water and watch what happened. We used sand, sugar, salt and soil. As you can tell from the photographs, our children in Year 5 learnt so much about the materials and their solubility. Once we had finished our experiment, we spent time to write our results down and compare them with what different groups found.

Today, we made our own digestive system. We used a sandwich bag to recreate the stomach and the churning which happens in there. Then, we moved the churned food (crackers, banana, soup and orange juice) to some tights. These were representing the small intestine and large intestine. Lastly, the waste food, which is faeces, was stored in the rectum (a plastic cup) and then our teachers cut a hole in the bottom to represent the anus and a bowel movement.
