Year 2 Array, Array, Array!

Date: 25th Jan 2022 @ 8:59pm

This week, we begun our new Maths topic of Multiplication and Division. Our first lesson involved recognising whether groups were equal or unequal before we challenged the children to create their own arrays in as many ways as possible. It was no surprise that the children created lots of different ways of making arrays using a variety of resources around the room such as money, numicon, counters, counting bears, base 10 and ten frames.

We will now begin to look at representing the calculations of arrays as a repeated addition and as a multiplication sentence. Although this is a difficult concept, we are proud of the determination and perseverance the children are displaying, keep up the great work!

Year 2 Musical Masterpiece

Date: 25th Jan 2022 @ 8:47pm

This half term, Year Two our Musical focus is exploring feelings through Music discussing how it makes us feel and how music makes the world a better place.

So far, we have studied a song called 'Rainbows' which is a song about Pride and Identity. We discussed what this meant to us as individuals and came to the conclusion it is important that we all respect each other and everyone's viewpoints. We then learnt the words to the song and practiced as a class to perform it as well as learning to play notes E, C and D in time to the song. Each week, alongside discussing the song, singing and playing the Glockenspiel we play games to find the beat and clap rhythmsOver the next few weeks, we will continue to look at more songs and further discuss how music makes the world a better place.

Year 2 No Pen Day- Spring 1

Date: 25th Jan 2022 @ 8:32pm

Last week, we had our favourite day- No Pen Day! Pupils and Teachers alike put out pens down for a full day and focused on using our communication skills. Throughout the day, we worked collaboratively to continue our Reading into Writing and Maths journey's.

We continued our Reading into Writing journey by learning about different tenses. We identified we can tell a sentences tense by finding the verb- to show matching past and present tense verbs we had to find the person with the verb of the opposite tense before sorting a variety of verbs and sentences into the tenses they were written.

In Maths, we consolidated our knowledge of giving change by playing a game of Mathopoly. For each square we landed on we had to calculate how much change a person would get depending on how much they spent and the coin they used to pay.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed continuing our learning of Hinduism with Mrs Bunday and PE with Mr Willetts.

Nursery Help! We're Stuck!

Date: 25th Jan 2022 @ 5:14pm

Oh no! There's a problem! Some of the toys have been frozen in ice! How can we get them out?

The children were given blocks of ice with toys frozen inside and a choice of ways to set them free! They were given warm water, sponges and hammers! They worked hard to try and free the toys from the ice. They talked about how the ice was melting and knew that if they hit the ice it would slowly get smaller and the toys would be free! You'll be pleased to know that they did manage to free all of the toys - phew!

Reception Exploring Ice!

Date: 24th Jan 2022 @ 8:48pm

The children have been busy exploring ice in the outside area. The ice was simply placed on a tray and left for the children to make their own observations, use new vocabulary they had learned that week and show collaboration.

"It feels wet...cold...slippy" Alicja.

"It's melting...look there is water...the sun is melting it" Mercedes.

"When it is cold water freezes" Charlie

Year 5 Science Club

Date: 23rd Jan 2022 @ 11:15am

At the start of Spring 1, Year 5's Science Club was officially launched!

So far, we have had a go at the following experiments to investigate different areas of science:

Making giant fingerprints (DNA and what makes us different)

Making raisins dance (Buoyancy)

Making different sized paper rockets (Air resistance)

Writing messages with lemon juice (Oxidisation)

Magic milk (Surface tension)

Year 5 No Pen Day - Spring 1

Date: 23rd Jan 2022 @ 10:55am

This week, we had our half-termly No Pen Day! This is a day where nobody, including the teachers, can use any form of pen or pencil!! We have to get very creative to be able to continue with the journeys we are in for each of our lessons. This is how we did it this time...

During Maths, we used spaghetti sticks to work out multiplication sums. To do this, we researched the ancient Japanese stick method where you have to put the number of sticks down in a diamond shape to represent the numbers you want to multiply. Next, you have to count how many times the sticks cross over and that is your answer. It took us a while to work it out, but once we had the hang of it, a lot of children said they preferred this method!!

For Reading into Writing, we continued with our 'Persuasive Letters' journey. The children had to cut out a jumbled up letter and put it in the correct order. We then used the Chromebooks to research the benefits of having a support dog in school.

In the afternoon, we made three types of paper aeroplanes to see which one would travel the furthest. We talked about the different designs and how air resistance would have an impact. To finish the day off, we went outside to test them!

Nursery The Great Outdoors!

Date: 20th Jan 2022 @ 5:31pm

Everyday, the children have access to our wonderful outdoor area. Here they can explore a variety of different activites and express themselves through lots of open ended resources. Some of the experiences on offer include role play, sand and water investigation, gross motor activites, activities to develop their thinking through cause and effect and of course there's always space for a little quiet time. The children love to play outdoors and it's a great place for them to build realtionships and learn to work toegther.

Year 3 Dem Bones!

Date: 20th Jan 2022 @ 4:15pm

In Science today we started learning about the human skeleton. We moved around the room in a carousel, looking at a variety of xrays, building skeletons, labelling and sketching skeletons. We finished off the lesson singing a song about bones.

We loved this lesson and we learnt the name of many bones!

Year 3 Our Final Forest School Fun!

Date: 20th Jan 2022 @ 3:56pm

Today we enjoyed our final forest school session and what fun it was. We worked really hard to make a fire, which was difficukt because it was quite damp outiside. We also used a potoato peeler to peel and sharpen a stick. We used this stick to hold a marshmallow that we toasted and turned into a smore.

It was delicious! We had a great three weeks and we can't wait until next time.

Year 6 Describing Viking hair in French!

Date: 20th Jan 2022 @ 2:30pm

Year 6 had a fun afternoon continuing their 'Les Vikings' unit in French. This week the children learned how to describe hair using the irregular verb 'avoir'. After learning how to describe the length, colour and style of hair, they played games of Guess Who where they had to ask questions - in French - about a person's hair.

Year 6 No Pens

Date: 19th Jan 2022 @ 6:53pm

We have enjoyed another No Pen Day in Year 6. Together we started the day by looking at Thunks - thought-provoking statements that we use to generate lots of discussions. During the day we took part in a GPS session outside - we had to find questions hidden around the playground and go to the adults with the answers. We also worked in pairs to look through an arithmetic test with mistakes and discussed together what errors had been made. In the afternoon, we spent time on our DT topic. This involved threading a needle and practising a range of different stitches.

Year 6 Stitching Superstars!

Date: 19th Jan 2022 @ 6:38pm

Today in DT we spent the afternoon practising our stitching skills. This involved being confident to thread a needle and then following tutorials that taught us how to complete 4 different stitches: running stitch, back stitch, overstitch and blanket stitch. In this topic we will be designing and making a mobile phone case and we will be choosing the sticthes that we want to use.

Year 3 Put your pens down!

Date: 19th Jan 2022 @ 11:58am

For No Pen Day, we put our pens down and picked up our language! In Reading into Writing we focused on the book Julian is a Mermaid and linked it to LGBTQ+. We hot seated Nana and Julian to ask questions around their thoughts, feelings and actions in the story. We then each took a section of the story to role play and add dialogue to.

In Maths we focused on our timetables and completed a loop card game around the room. We really had to ensure we were using our listening skills and calculating mentally. We then completed a tarsia in groups linking to the timetables.

We had a great day and we enjoyed using our communication skills and letting our pens have a rest!

Year 2 Lighting the Way in Science Club!

Date: 19th Jan 2022 @ 11:45am

This week in the Year 2 Science Club, we have been experimenting with light.  The children changed the colour of the light using sellotape and felt tip pens.  They then created shadows.  They learnt how each colour has a different wave length of light and how the colour we see in the colour that is not absorbed from the white light that hits the object.  This is then reflected back as the colur of the object.

Addison: “We have learnt that red light has a longer light wave and that violet has a shorter light wave.”

Alena: “A shadow is made from the light being blocked, by an object, from the light source.”

Kyril: “ I like Science Club because I learn new things.  I found out that the closer the torch the bigger the shadow.”

Year 5 Money, Money, Money!

Date: 18th Jan 2022 @ 8:15pm

So far during Spring 1, Year 5 have been looking at different aspects of finance.

First, we looked at what 'affording' things mean. To do this, we dicussed the difference between wanting and needing things, as well as being able to prioritise those in order of necessity. We had a really good conversation about this and then put our skills to the test... going to an imaginary toy shop and only having a certain amount of money. We then got into a discussion about lending and borrowing money off our friends and the bank.

This week, we looked at what a payslip is and what the information on it means. We then discussed important terms such as gross pay, national insurance and the different types of taxes. Once we knew the difference between council tax and income tax, we went through different services in our community and discussed where the money comes from to fund these.

Year 1 Ordering Objects

Date: 18th Jan 2022 @ 6:36pm

Today during no pen day we worked practically to order groups of objects. After looking at lots of examples together we worked independently to order groups of objects. We began with 1 set of objects that showed different amounts, e.g. 3 plates of cakes, one with 13, one with 9 and one with 11. We then had to order these objects from smallest to greatest. After completing some of these examples, we worked with varying representations of numbers and ordered them from greatest to smallest.

Reception Who will escape the quickest?

Date: 18th Jan 2022 @ 6:08pm

Today Recpetion took part in the whole school No Pen Day!  Recpetion were faced with a bit of a challenge.  Marshmellow the snow monster had used his magic powers to freeze Elsa, Ana, Kristoff and Sven.  We have to work together to see which meduim would help them escape the quickest.  We discussed which meduims we could use including washing up liquid, salt, warm water and a scrubby brushy.  As a class we made and prediction and talk about why we thought that.  The children had some fantastic discussions and made some superb observations about what was happening.  They even learnt some new scientific words including melting, freezing, liquid, solid and temperature.

"The ice is melting becuase my hand are hot" Evelyn

"You need something warm to melt it like the sun" Isaac

"It doesn't melt in the freezer because the temperature is cold" Isobelle

"The ice is turning into water when it melts" James

"When it is cold water freezes" Maja

Nursery Architects In the Making!

Date: 18th Jan 2022 @ 5:24pm

Nursery took part in the whole school no pen day by creating a den for a bear. We have been reading the story "Bear's Winter House" and we decided that the bear might like a bit of help to build his next house. The children made brilliant Architects and used a variety of materials to create a den for the bear. The thought carefully about how to attach the materials to make the house stable and didn't give up when the houses fell down! They were great at working together and listened carefully to each others ideas. I would definitely live in a house built by them!

Year 4 Computing AND Lego?!

Date: 18th Jan 2022 @ 4:53pm

Computing and Lego? What a lesson that sounds like! Today Year 4 would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Goldie from EdTech who came and taught our computing lesson today. We had a fantastic time and learnt loads about coding. We got to build a Lego snail, and then all through the coding software make the snail make sounds, move, and light up! We can't wait for the next one!

Year 1 'It's The Boy!'

Date: 18th Jan 2022 @ 4:40pm

Today in Year 1 we had a visit from the character in the story ‘Lost and Found.’ It was the boy! We were all very excited to talk to him and ask him lots of questions. The boy talked to the children about his journey to the South Pole. He explained what he saw, what he heard and how he felt. He then showed us the route he took across the Atlantic and Southern Ocean on our big world map. We gathered lots of information from talking to the boy that will help us to write our recounts!

Year 4 Pas de journ

Date: 18th Jan 2022 @ 4:25pm

Today was 'No Pen Day' at Boundary which fitted perfectly into our French lesson this week! We are learning all about our families in French and it gave us a great opportunity for a discussion about all the different people in our families. We were able to ask each other about our different family members and answer back in French! Bon travail Year 4!

Year 1 Microhabitats!

Date: 17th Jan 2022 @ 6:38pm

Today we took our Science lesson outdoors! In our lesson today we were introduced to microhabitats and the animals that live in these small habitats. We looked at some examples of different microhabitats that we might find in the local environment and learnt that microhabitats can be as small as a fallen branch or even the space under a stone! We then recapped on what a minibeast is and looked at some examples of the kinds of microhabitats these creatures might live in. It was then time to go outside into our outdoor areas and forest school space to find some examples of minibeasts and their microhabitats! We also collected our own natural resources to enable us to make our own microhabitats!

Year 5 Quelle Est La Date Aujourd'hui?

Date: 14th Jan 2022 @ 8:30am

In French this week Year 5 have begun learning the months of the year and recapping numbers to 31. We will be using this knowledge to write and say the date in French and, later on in the term, translate diary entries and dates of birth from French to English and vice versa.
We began our journey by looking at images that represent each month and saying the French word for that month out loud. Then, to check our understanding, we played a matching game where we had to pair up each image with its associated month name - we even had to put them in the correct order!

Finally, we once again recapped our number from 1 to 31 by singing along to the French number song - a song which, once you hear it, you can hardly ever forget!

We can't wait to continue our learning!
