During their time in nursery, the children will become familiar with 2D and 3D shapes and begin to use mathematical language to describe them e.g. sides, corners, straight, flat and round. The best way for children to become familair with different shapes is by exploring them and using them in different contexts. Our children have been matching shapes, building with shapes, creating paintings using shapes as silhouettes, painting large cardboard shapes and sorting shapes. They have also followed the outline of different shapes with buttons and explored 2D shapes outside in shaving foam - there's been a whole lot of shaping going on!
Now Press Play... Anglo-Saxon Adventure
Date: 5th Dec 2021 @ 10:24am
Using our 'Now Press Play' equipment, Year 5 immersed themselves into an Anglo-Saxon experience.
Each child became a character who had been blamed for the escape of the village ox. They were immediately sent into exile and walked for miles to a nearby forest. As they were walking, they came across a camp of Vikings who were planning to burn down their village. They had to warn their neighbours whilst worrying that they would never see their family again.
During this experience, we learnt about:
- How the Anglo-Saxons relied on the land to survive
- The structure of Anglo-Saxon society
- The role of King Alfred in the conflict between Anglo-Saxons and Vikings
Date: 5th Dec 2021 @ 10:19am
Year 5 have really enjoyed learning about the Anglo-Saxons.
To start our unit, we recapped on our chronological knowledge of History. Once we all knew where the Anglo-Saxons came in history, we then talked about the reasons why the Anglo-Saxons invaded.
We have also investigated the different areas of Anglo-Saxon life: kingdoms, laws and punishment, the social hierarchy and the names and places the Anglo-Saxons created that are still around today!
The children were fascinated to learn new words such as churl, weregild and Mercia.

As part of our Hindu topic in RE, this week we have been focusing our learning on Holi. Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates spring, love and new life.
Holi (also known as the 'festival of colours') is a colourful, fun festival where there is singing, dancing and throwing of powder paint and coloured water. In this festival Hindu's celebrate their god Krishna and the legend of Holika and Prahlad.
As you can see in the pictures, Year 5 have been creating their own Holi art. They really enjoyed putting their knowledge into practice.

This week the school councillors met virtually with a very special guest- Mrs Webster, PE subject leader . She wanted them to discuss how the sports premium can be spent by improving our playground to get children active at playtimes. There were lots of ideas from a racing track to snakes and ladders to skipping ropes in KS2 playground. All the councillors will feed this information back to their classes and we will meet again shortly to discuss the outcomes and inform Mrs Webster.
How Do You Make An Alien Spaceship?

After reading the story "Alien's Love Dinopants" the children designed and made their own alien spaceships out of junk modelling. They were provided with a selection of junk modelling resources including boxes and yoghurt pots. They then decided how to arrange and attach them to create a super duper spaceship!

This week in science our Year 4's have been learning all about the ear. We have talked about the different parts of the ear, how they all work together and how our brain processes sounds. We then created our own PowerPoints to show off what we have learned about the human ear so far and presented to each other.

Today we read our new story ‘The Jolly Postman.’ Throughout the story we discussed the meaning of key words, identified rhyming words and began to identify the features of a letter. After reading the story we received a letter from the Jolly Postman asking for our help! The letter explained that all the Jolly Postman’s post had blown out of his bag and got muddled up! The Jolly Postman didn’t know which were letters and which were not, so our task was to help him!

Reception have been learning the beginnings of gymnastics in PE. They have been using their bodies to make different shapes. This develops strength, fitness, confidence and flexibility. It is also a lot of fun!
Take a look at how we are doing!

This week Reception Christmas has arrived. We have been busy writing letters to Santa, designing and building toys in Santa's workshop and learning about the story of the first Christmas. We have been reading the story 'The Gingerbread Man'. We have been making story maps and asding labels and simple sentences using our phonic knowledge. We have also been busy ordering gingerbread numbers 1-10, subtising using a dice by playing roll the gingerbred man, retelling the story at the storytelling table, painting gingerbread men and collaging them at the creative table. What a busy week.
Date: 30th Nov 2021 @ 6:15pm
The children in Reception have been working super hard on their basis number skills. We have been learning to subtise small quantities up to six by looking patterns and arrangements of number. We have been arranging autumnal objects in diffferent ways during continuous provision. We have also be learning the importance on counting carefully and understanding a quantities cardinal value. We have been learning to order our number up to 10 and exploring the composition of thiese numbers using tens frames and part part whole models. Have a look at our super learning.

This week we have been practising using a range of tools on the 'Paintz' programme. Our task was to create a winter snowman picture. Whilst creating our picture we also practised using drop and drag to create shapes of different sizes. Finally we used our typing skills to put our name and date on our work.
It All Got A Little Bit Messy!
Date: 28th Nov 2021 @ 12:38pm
The children love sensory experiences in nursery and they provide so many learning opportunites. They are great for physical development as they require the use of both fine and gross motor skills. The are also a great way for children to build relationships with each other as they share and take turns and talk about what they experiencing. As well as all of this, they also support the children's communitcation and language development as the describe, question and explain what they are experiencing. Oh, and of course they have a lot of fun!

Today Year 6 were joined by local author Dan Worsley. Dan led writing workshops with both classes, which involved describing a villain in a scene. The children were given lots of tips and ideas for making their writing exciting for the reader and Dan was really impressed with the work that was produced. We may just have budding authors in our school!

This half-term we have been learning how to code animations and games, using a website called code.org. In this lesson we had to code part of a Minecraft game and could even add sound effects and music to make it more realistic. These skills will help the children as they move through school, as computing skills and coding have become part of our everyday lives. Pupils move from 'block-coding', to 'free coding' and eventually may be able to write their own lines of code.

Anyone can take part either at home with your friends and family or within the community too.
Get planting and help prevent climate change!
Working Scientifically - Circuits
Date: 24th Nov 2021 @ 8:34pm
We had a great Science lesson this week. As part of our electricty unit, we focussed on working scientifically and fair testing. After recapping on what we had learned so far about electricity and circuits, we were given a tray of electrical components and asked to think about enquiry questions we could ask. We learned more about voltage and decided on the question - How does the number of cells in a circuit affect the brightness of a bulb? We then discussed fair testing and which variables we could change and which would stay the same, before making predictions about the outcome of the test.
