That's right! Today at Boundary was no pen day, and what a day we've had in Year 4. Lots of great discussion and debates going on in Reading into Writing about the differences between facts and opinions. In maths we were learning about adding 1, 10, 100 and 1000 to a 4-digit number with a fantastic activity to finish off the lesson! The this afternoon is Science we learned all about conductors and insulators of electricity and a good sessions trying and testing those using the circuits. Finally, to finish off the day we showed off our super search engine skills to find out information about a famous person! Unfortunately... Mr McCormack completely forgot at one point today and picked up his pen! He was subsequently told off my the childfren in Maple Class and even by Mr Bamber.

Today we put the pens down and used our communication and listening skills to get through the day! In Maths, we used cereal to practise our Key Instant Recall Facts and found different ways to make numbers up to 20. We also completed some speaking and listening games and tested out our memory.
To finish off the day we found ourselves being secret agents in Paris. We learnt basic French greetings and destroyed the bad guy!
A day with no pens.....but plenty of discussion!

Tuesday 5th October was No Pen Day. Pens and pencils were removed from tables and we had a whole day of discussion, problem solving and debate. The aim of the day was to improve our communication skills. We started by working in groups to solve mental maths problems, before moving on to talk about the slave trade as part of Black History month. We considered various dilemmas, talked about how to control infection in PSHE and debated the importance of various foods in our History lesson on the Mayan civilisation.

This week in Maths we have come to an end of our place value unit. During this unit, we investigated Roman numerals which the children found fascinating!
To finish the week off, the children in Year 5 were able to put their new knowledge of Roman numerals to the test by doing a tri-jigsaw. This involved working out what the Roman numerals were in numbers and then putting the tri-jigsaw together on the template. The children engaged in lots of brilliant conversations about the numbers, as well as using their problem-solving skills too!

This week we have been electing our school councillors! We have had a great week in Year 4 prepping our manifestos and perfecting our speeches. We learned all about democracy and what makes up a good manifesto. Lots of our little politicians across Year 4 entered the running for school councillor, wrote fantastic manifesto's and presented them in front of the class! We then got our ballot papers, and took them into the hall where our very own voting station had been set up! Well done to Layla and Lucas on your new appointments!

School Council Elections!
Yesterday was a very exciting day- it was Election Day for the School Councillors!
Candidates started the day by presenting their manifesto to their class and then every child completed a ballot paper to vote for their chosen representative. The voting booths had been set up in the hall and children placed their ballot paper in the ballot box. After the votes had been counted, an assembly was held to reveal the results.
The children learnt about the key British Value, democracy, what it means and if it is a good thing.

Today the whole school have been voting for who they want as their school councillor to represent their class. In Cedar, we had three pupils who put themselves forward so these three pupils pitched to the class on why we should vote for them to represent us. We then went to the school hall to cast our votes before having a special school lunch to celebrate the day. We found out who had been voted in for each year group in a virtual whole school assembly this afternoon.
A big congratulations to our Cedar School Councillor.

In Science, we have been learning all about forces. We decided to carry out an experiement to test which material would be best to drive a car on. We discussed how to keep a test fair and used our Working Scientifically butterfly to carry out the journey from asking questions to drawing conclusions.
We found out that the more friction between the surface and the vehicle the slower it moved and decided that smoother surfaces were much better to drive on. We thoroughly enjoyed being scientists!

Election day was upon us and the Year 3 children had a bug decision to make. Who would be their class councillor? The children did such a great job creating a manifesto and sharing that with their peers and then a secret poll was held. We discussed the importance of having a democracy and how this had an impact on our lives.
We are extemely proud to announce this year's winners were:
Bracken- Lacey

This week in science we have been learning about the properties of different every day materials. We practically investigated the objects by trying to change their shape. We then made our own special material 'oobleck' and found out what the properties were, realising it was different depending on whether we were touching it or not.
Date: 30th Sep 2021 @ 8:32am
This weeks science lesson was an investigation into materials: Which materials are electrical insulators?
We started by predicting which materials we thought were insulators and which were conductors. Then pupils made a simple circuit from wires, batteries and a bulb, and then created a gap in the circuit to stop the electricity flowing. The pupils then placed a selection of materials into the circuit and observed whether the bulb was illuminated or not. Pupils recorded their observations in a results table. We also discovered that some materials were better conductors than others - these made the bulb even brighter. Our conclusion was that metals are good conductors of electricty!

In Year 6 we have completed our first Reading into Writing journey: News Articles. Our journey involved reading through lots of examples of news articles so that we could identify the features. We also did lots of GPS work based on direct and reported speech so that we could learn how to use quotes accurately in our writing. We also took part in teacher model and shared write sessions to help us understand exactly how to organise our writing. Finally, we used our trip to PGL to write an article about the experience.

Singing Nursery Rhymes and songs is a very important part of our nursery day. It helps the children to become familar with patterns in langauage, rhyming words and it helps the children develop an ear for our language. Both rhythm anf rhyme help the children to hear the sounds and syllabuls in words, which helps them learn to read! The children love using our special "Sing It" bag as it's full of nursery rhyme props. We pull a prop from the bag and then sing the matching rhyme!

This week in maths we have been focusing on learning new mathematical language and exploring its meaning through the use of different stories. We have been thinking about the words more and less and discussing what they mean. To help use understand this in more depth we role played stories using different props.
We read the story 'A Squash and a squeeze' and talked about how more animlas came into the old ladies house which made it feel very squahed. We talked about why the lady felt squashed and that is was because the amount of people was getting bigger. When the old lady took at the animals out we discussed the quantiy was getting smaller because there was less animals. We also read the story 'A Duck in a Truck". We made props to help use retell the story and used the language of more as each animal came to help the duck get out of the mud.

Today we created maps of our classroom environments using loose parts! We firstly talked about what a bird’s eye view meant, and how these photographs and recordings are made. We then looked at our classroom in more detail, discussing what shape various things were, and how we could represent these on our map. We pointed out specific points in the classroom that we would need to include. After we created our maps we then described our work to other groups in the class, explaining our reasons for the choice of equipment we had used.

Yesterday, alongside the rest of School we celebrated European Day of Languages. We began the day learning about who can celebrate it and why we celebrate the 24 different languages that are spoken across the European Union. Then, we moved on to learning some simple phrases in Italian and learnt that they have a formal (Salve) and informal (ciao) way of saying hello; we also learnt that 'buon giorno' means good morning, 'Per favore' is please and 'grazie' means thank you. Finally, we placed Italy on a map, learnt the meaning of the flag as well as having a look at their culture.
