This afternoon in Year 4 we swapped our French lesson as yesterday was the European Day of Languages! To celebrate we changed our French lesson and learned all about the different langauges in Europe, which there are 24 of! In Year 4 the langauge that we focussed on was Portugese. We learned about where Portugal is, we learned a bit about Portugese culture and a few words along the way. Here are some of our Year 4's doing an absolutely excellent job at our English to Portugese phrases/numbers match up activity. Tenha um bom dia!

Today, alongside the rest of our school, we celebrated European Day of Languages. We began by learning a little bit about the day, who can participate and why it is good to learn more than one language.
We then focussed more on our chosen language which was Spanish! We learnt how to say hello, good morning, yes, no, thank you, please and goodbye! We all enjoyed learning how to pronounce these phrases and we tried to use them throughout the day.
Finally we watched 'Cabeza, Hombros, Rodillas and Pies,' which is heads, shoulders, knees and toes! We had lots of fun joining in with the song and we then used our knowledge and word mats to label different parts of the body, which links to our learning in Science this half term.

From that we began discussing the different European languages we knew. After that, Oak and Elder classes were given a specific country to focus on: Poland and Latvia. We then used Google Translate to find out what some key words/phrases are in Polish and Latvian. We also found out some other key facts about the countries, such as populaiton, countires that they border with and traditional dishes. We enjoyed finding out about other countries.

This half term, Year Two have began learning about healthy lifestyles and thinking about all the things we do to keep ourselves healthy. The children all drew pictures of the things they do to keep themselves healthy and wrote some sentences to accompany it. Miss Duckworth and Miss Hooson were impressed with the answers the children came up with and we discussed how the amount of sleep we get, eating a balanced diet, speaking about our feelings as well as making sure we challenge ourselves is all included in keeping ourselves healthy.

No-Bot the Robot is a story about Bernard the robot who lost his bottom on a swing at the park. Everytime he thinks he has found it- it disappears again! Fortunatley, Bernard has lots of friends who kindly help him search for his bottom until it is found. It is a story of resillience and friendship.
The children in Reception enjoyed listening to the story with their teacher, looking at the illustrations in the Book Nook, building and creating their own robots with blocks, playdough and art resources. They also talked about the characteristic 'Katy Kindness' and what being a good friend means.
Here's some of the activities we did this week...

In our science lesson this week, the pupils were asked; Which cup would keep a hot drink hot the longest?
We worked as a class to plan an investigation to decide on the best material to make a cup for a hot drink: plastic, metal, cardboard or ceramic. After discussing how to make the test fair and making a prediction, we put hot water (75 degrees C) in each of the four cups and measured the temperature - using a thermometer - every two minutes. Although it was quiet close, the cardboard and plastic cups kept the water the warmest, whereas the metal and ceramic mugs allowed the water to cool. This is because cardboard and plastic are insulators of heat, but metal and cermic are conductors of heat.
In conclussion, if you want to keep your brew warm, use a plastic mug!

We have really enjoyed reading "The Colour Monster" by Anna Llenas. It's a story about a monster whose feelings are all mixed up but his friend helps him to sort them all out. We explored each of the feelings happy, sad, angry, scared, calm and love and listened to different music that made us feel each of those emotions. Can you spot our happy, angry and sad faces in the photos?

This week in Geography we began to learn about physical and human features. We learnt that human and physical features are things we can see all around us. We discussed how physical features are natural and would be here even if there were no people around. We identified physical features such as seas, grass, mountains and rivers. We also talked about how human features are man made and built by people. It was then time to visit the outdoor areas around school and the Forest School area to identify as many human and physical features as possible. Have a look at what we found!

This week in RE we learnt about baptism and what it means to Christians. We talked about how a baby being born is a very happy time and some of us shared how we have celebrated this time with our families. We learnt that baptism is when a baby is welcomed into the Christian faith and the parents and godparents make promises to help the baby. We learnt all about the different parts of the baptism and practiced using lots of new key vocabulary. We then used our new learning to label a picture of a baby being baptized, discussing the symbolism of each feature.

This half term our music theme is Mamma Mia! Today we listened to the song a couple of times (and maybe had a little dance) to introduce ourselves to our topic. We then broke off into our groups and had a discussion about the music. How did it make us feel? What did we think of the song? What instruments could we hear? What musical vocabulary could we think of to help describe the song? Some great discussion and teamwork from Year 4, not to mention the dancing!

This week in our Science lesson we continued to learn about light. We learned that light travels in straight lines and that lightwaves bounce or reflect off of an object and into our eyes. This is how we see things. We worked in groups to create a model of this using string as the light wave.

In Maths this week we have been working really hard to develop our calculation skills. We have been learnining to count mentally in different stages (eg. 2s, 5s, 10s) from any number. Trying to spot patterns to help us with our accuracy and speed. We have also been developing addition and subtraction skills. We first learnt methods before applying our skills to various problems.

This half term, Year Two have been enjoying a dance unit focused on animals. We have been listening to different styles of music and moving like a range of animals including lions, elephants, giraffes and monkeys. We have shared lots of ideas about how these animals might move and we have been couting in sets of 8 to try and ensure we move in sync with our partners. We have been working togtether to create our own motifs and Miss Hooson and Miss Duckworth have been very impressed with our creativity and enthusiasm.

Today we have begun to write the first draft of our non-chronological reports about rivers. The pupils are using their plans, which are in note form, to write paragraphs about the different river features found along the river's journey. In the following lessons pupils will edit and improve their drafts, before publishing their final non-chronological report.

Today we began our Geography lesson by recapping the four countries in the United Kingdom and their capital cities. We again looked at a UK map and located each country. We then began to identify features of three different locations, Blackpool, Grange Park and London. We looked at a number of photos from each of these places and discussed the similarities and differences. The children understood that Blackpool is on the coast and near to the beach. They were also able to identify that London is a city with tall buildings, a long river and old buildings such as Big Ben.

This week in Maths we have been focussing on counting within 10. We have recapped counting accurately using 1-1 correpondance and forming numerals correctly to record our answers. We have also introduced using tens frames to help us represent different amounts. In continous provison we have also completed lots of activities to support number formation and accurate counting.
