This week was a week for us to pay our respects and remember those who bravely gave their lives for our country. Here are our year 4 children making their commemorative poppies that we then planted in our 'Remembrance Garden' outside the front of the school. This was then followed up by a fantastic service led by Miss Ashton and the Year 6 prefects.

Poppy Paintings

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 3:39pm

This week, as part of Remembrance, Year 2 created paintings of a poppy field. In History, we have been learning about why we wear a poppy to remember Soldiers who lost their lives and created paintings of the poppies in Flander's Field. This was a brilliant opportunity to learn about Primary Colours to allow us to make the colour green. We also discussed the importance of creating poppies different sizes depending on their position within the field. Miss Duckworth and Miss Hooson were very impressed with the end results.

Bonfire Night!

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 12:16pm

Why are there so many leaves on the ground in Autumn?

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 12:10pm

Holly went on a woodland walk to Salisbury Woods to find the answer to this question!

In the woods we saw lots of leaves on the ground, all different colours, and some were even falling to the ground as we walked along. We collected leaves, looked at their shape, size and colour and learnt that some leaves in Autumn die, change colour and then fall off the trees. We also learnt that some trees are evergreen and don't loose their leaves in Autumn but stay green all year".

We also had fun climbing trees, listening to the sound the leaves made as we ran through them, created leaf angels, played Pooh sticks and spotted some woodland animals, such as a Robin and a squirrel.

"This is a big leaf...it is brown and oval shape". Mercedes.

"The leaves make a crunchy sound!" Oscar.

"I see orange, brown, yellow and red leaves everywhere!" Jaxon.

"The leaves have died and fallen off the trees." Charlie

If you go down to the woods today..!

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 11:20am

This week the children in Willow class enjoyed a trip to Salisbury Woods where we were observing seasonal change and collecting lots of autumnal objects like leaves, pine cones, acrons and conkers.  The children had a great time exploring the outdoors and were even lucky enough to spot some woodland animals.  When we returned to school we produced some lovely writing about the things we saw, made autumn sun catchers using the things we had collected and did some leave printing.

Year Three remember

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 9:01am

Throughout this week we have been learning about the importance importamce of Remeberance Day. We participated in our whole school remerence service to pay our respect to the soldiers that lost their lives for us.

We have read a variety of poems and stories in Guided reading that looked at World Wars from the soldiers perspective. We also painted and made poppies which we planted in our remerbance garden. We found this very important as the poppies we planted had the names of soldiers who had lost their lives.

Gears and Pulleys

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 8:12am

In DT today we looked at gears and pulleys and how they work in order to create movement. We learned about gear trains and the direction in which gears go depending on how many gears there are in the train. We also learned about combinations of gears in order to speed up/down the gears.

Year 6 Remembers

On Thursday 11th of November, we celebrated Remembrance Day. We talked about soldiers and how they are very important and keep us safe. Nursery took part in the whole school Remebrance Day and planted poppies in the Remembrance Garden and joined the rest of the school for the Remembrance Service. Then we made some beautiful poppies to help us remember the soldiers.

We're On A Health Kick!

Date: 9th Nov 2021 @ 8:50pm

In nursery, we have been talking about how we can keep our bodies healthy. We started the week by talking about how important it is to keep our teeth healthy. We talked about going to the dentist and brushed some giant teeth! Then we learnt about how important it is to eat our fruit and vegetables as they help us to grow big and strong and also help our bodies to fight off any germs by giving us vitamins! Then we made our own delicious fruit salad.

Drama club!

The children particually enjoyed moving around the room whilst taking on the role of different animals!

Let's Celebrate

Date: 8th Nov 2021 @ 8:21pm

The children in Reception have been busy learning about Diwali the festival of light.  As part of our learning the children and teachers in Reception held a Diwali Celebration Day where the children were invited to dress in bright colours.  Throughout the day we learnt about different Sikh and Hindu Diwali trandtions including making our own Rangoli Patterns to welcome people, making and decorating salt dough diva lamps to put in our houses, learning a Sikh dancel and preparing a sikh desert 'a ladoo'. We also looked at some tradition clothing and had the opportunity to ty them on.  We designed and made Diwali card which we sent to our friends and family.  At the end of the day we had a Diwali celebration in the dance studio where we preformed our dance to Miss Ashton and Miss Moyes.  To close the day we sat in a circle and lit our diva lamps together.  We reflectied on our learning and  thought carefully about the importance of being kind to others ensuring good overcomes evil.  What a fabulous day of learning.  Have a look at some of our pictures!

Room on the Broom!

Date: 8th Nov 2021 @ 7:30pm

Today we were introduced to our new story ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. We read the story together, joining in with the rhyming words and familiar parts of the story. We talked about the meaning of any unfamiliar words and made inferences from the text. At various points in the story we predicted what we thought might happen next and what clues we could see/read to support this. We then worked in pairs to retell the key events in the story, using the book for support where needed.

Mini-beasts and homely habitats

Date: 8th Nov 2021 @ 9:34am

In our first Forest School session, we created habitats for minibeast and began work on clearing out the middle pond and used fine motor skills creating hand-knitted friendship bands. It was fortunate that our children were well prepared with their wellingtons and change of clothes as it was very cold (and they got very muddy!). The hard work of clearing out the pond will ensure that new wildlife will have a safe, natural home for breeding, living and enjoying life in Boundary's Forest School!

Black History Month

Date: 8th Nov 2021 @ 9:10am

We have been focusing on Black History Month and we looked at the life and accomplishments of Mary Seacole. We were amaxed by the resilience and determination that she showed despite facing discrimination. We moved on to writing a diary from Mary Seacole's point of view. We looked at the features of diaries and unpicked them ready to write our own!

Namaste!

Date: 7th Nov 2021 @ 5:46pm

This week we started our new PE topic of Yoga. We focused on staying calm and controlling our breathing while learning new poses such as the tree and the cloud. We finished by exploring what we were grateful for.

Poppy Art

Date: 6th Nov 2021 @ 7:40pm

Today we created our own brilliant poppy art. We experimented and explored marks using a variety of tools, including thick brushes, thin brushes and small sponges. We also were introduced to the primary colours and how they can be mixed to make secondary colours. In year 1, we enjoy every oppourtunity to use paints and be creative and today was no different! We all took great care to produce our final piece and we were all very proud of our efforts!

Perfecting pointillism!

Date: 5th Nov 2021 @ 3:57pm

This week we have been learning about Remeberance Day and the significance of poppies.

During Art this half term we will be looking at pointillism. As a class we started to look at some of the skills involved for this style. We used our fingers, cotton buds, glue spreaders and paintbrushes to paint dots to create our poppies!

Poppy Art

Date: 5th Nov 2021 @ 3:54pm

This week we have introduced Remembrance Day to our class, focusing on why we have a Remembrance Day and why poppies are used to symbolise this important day.

Using special watercolour paints and paper, children in Year 5 produced a range of beautiful poppy art to decorate a fallen soldier. We had to use special techniques to create the different effects on the special paper.

This is the start of a two-week period we have in school to remember and honour members of the armed forces.

Black History Month

Date: 5th Nov 2021 @ 3:48pm

October was Black History month, and in Year 5 we enjoyed finding out about promenent Black muscians from the past. This linked with our learning in Music, where we were listening to, and making observations about Motown music from the 1960s and 1970s. In our writing journey, we researched the singer and musician, Stevie Wonder, and wrote a historical narrative about his amazing life. As part of our guided reading sessions, we read about other famous Black people who have had an impact on the world; Sislin Fay Allen, Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela.

WOW!

Date: 5th Nov 2021 @ 3:48pm

For our WOW, we turned in archiologists and went digging for rocks and fossils. We set up a diggin site, a cleaning site and an inspections site. We looked at the characteristics of various rocks and fossils and started to group them.

Hold the phone!

Date: 4th Nov 2021 @ 6:32pm

Hold the phone...! That's exactly what our Year 4's were doing in this weeks Science WOW lesson. We are focussing on sound this half term and we thought that this would be a great way to kick off our topic. We made phones with paper cups and string, looking at how the sound of our voices travelled through the string and to the other cup! We noticed that to hear our partner properly, the string had to be nice and tight and we had a great time along the way!

Let's Celebrate

Date: 4th Nov 2021 @ 5:17pm

Nursery had a wonderful time celebrating Diwali. Mrs. Kaur, who works in Reception, came in to to talk to the chidlren about the festival and all the special things she does to celebrate Diwali. The children then made some Diva Lamps, Rangoli Patterns and designed some gorgeous Mehndi patterns.

In space, no-one can here you learn

Date: 4th Nov 2021 @ 4:08pm

This term our science topic is , 'The Earth and Space'.

We will be learning about some of the amazing things that can be found in the universe, including planets, moons and asteroids.  In our first lesson, we worked together as a class to create a scale diagram of the planets in our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Using the actual sizes, we calculated how big we would have to make the planets to fit on our classroom ceilling - Jupiter has a diameter of 142,800 km (11.2 x bigger than Earth), so in our diagram, Jupiter had a diameter of 66cm.  We also used the same method to calculate how far apart the planets would be on our diagram, using their relative distance from the Sun - Earth is approximately 149,000,000 km (1 Astronomical Unit) away from the Sun, but on our diagram it is just 40 cm.  The pupils then used real photographs of the planets to paint or colour them in the correct colours.
