Same areas, different perimeters!!

Date: 22nd Mar 2021 @ 1:02pm

In today's Maths session we started our new unit on area and perimeter. We began with looking at the definiton of the following terms: area, perimeter, rectilinear, compound and volume. We then looked at different ways shapes could have the same area but different perimeters. We practised drawing rectangles on 1cm paper then created compound rectilinear shapes with the same area.

Fundamental Skills

Date: 20th Mar 2021 @ 6:58pm

Today in Year 1, we made the most of the lovely weather and took our PE session outside!

For the remainder of this half term we are going to be focussed on developing and improving our fundamental skills. This will include focussing on running, jumping, balancing, throwing, catching, agility and coordination.

Today we took part in a number of different team games which enabled us to practise lots of the above skills! These games encouraged us to work together as a small group within our bubble, as well as testing our listening and communication skills.

A Trip to Spain!

Date: 20th Mar 2021 @ 12:33pm

Today we entered our classroom after lunch with a passport and an aeroplane ticket. Our classroom had been transformed to look like an aeroplane! We took our seats, put our hand luggage under our seats, fastened our seatbelts and watched a safety video. The plane took off and we were in the air! How would this feel is it was real? We watched a video that someone had recorded whilst on an aeroplane above the clouds to help us deepen our thinking and understanding. We enjoyed our in flight snack and relaxed on our flight!

Once we landed we walked off the plane and around the airport to collect our luggage. We then headed to our hotel in Madrid. It was much warmer in Madrid that the UK! We then thought about what we would do once we were in our hotel. We thought we might unpack, go swimming, have a nap or get something to eat! We discussed some of the activities you might do on holiday, before heading back to our hotel and finishing our role

Red Nose Day Fun!

Date: 19th Mar 2021 @ 3:37pm

We had a great time raising money for Comic Relief today! We all swapped one piece of our uniform for something red to show our support. This afternoon we had a laugh a minute with some classic jokes and we played 'Pin the Nose on the Panda'. Thank you for all of your contributions for such a good cause!

Making animal habitats at Forest School

Date: 19th Mar 2021 @ 10:10am

This week at Forest School the children enjoyed learning about animals and their habitats.  We talked about different habitas and what animals need to survive.  The children then worked together to collect sticks, leaves, grass and stones in their buckets and used them to create their own animal homes.

"I'm putting leaves in mine to keep the animals warm"  Ellie-Mae

"We are sticking the sticking in the ground to make a wall" Arthur.

Then we explored the Forest School area and looked for different animal footprints in the mud.

Afterwards we were made a fire to boil the water ready for our warm vimto drink.  We talked about how to keep ourselves safe whilst making a fire.  The we discussed the three different elements we need to make a fire; heat, wood and air.

"Lisa wears a special fire glove so she doesn't burn her hand' Lyra-Rose

"Never go in the middle of the circle beacuse you might get burnt" Oscar.

At the end of the session we enjoyed a lovely drink of warm vimto and sang some songs around the fire.

Spiders, Crocodiles, Birds and Sheep!

Date: 18th Mar 2021 @ 5:06pm

This week we have been learning some nursery rhymes and have done some fun activities linked to each rhyme. We have learnt "Incy Wincy Spider", "Down In The Jungle", "Two Little Dickie Birds" and "Baa Baa Black Sheep".

We have also had lots of child initiatied play including Pirates, and picnics at the beach!

Marvellous Maths

Date: 18th Mar 2021 @ 1:38pm

This week we have been revisiting some areas we have previously covered in Maths, including how many tens are in numbers, multiples of ten and a hundred, the value of each three digit numbers and how to partition numbers in different ways using different images.

We need to keep up our knowledge of place value because this will help us with addition, subtraction, multiplcation and division.

Dodging Our Way Through PE

Date: 18th Mar 2021 @ 1:35pm

In today's PE lessons we looked at different skills we would need as part of 'Invasion Games'. Today's skill was 'dodging'. We had to remember to look where we were going (keeping our heads up) in order to effectively dodge opponents who were coming towards us. For one of our activities we worked in groups of 4/5 where we held hands in a circle by holding plastic bands. One member of the group had a bib tucked into their waist band and they are the ones to be defended. The catcher then had 30 seconds to try and catch that person's bib whilst the group worked together to defend them by blocking the attacker. As you can see from the pictures, we had a great lesson!

The Royal Ballet Zooms in

Date: 18th Mar 2021 @ 1:29pm

We have been having weekly Ballet lessons from The Royal Ballet School via zoom. Miss Gough has taught us some beautiful ballet moves as well as the French words for meaning. We have enjoyed linking our ballet lessons with our Light topic in Science as we have danced like lights, flames, fireworks and candles. Ballet is all about core strength, stamina and control.

French words:

Tendu - to stretch

Reverence - curtsey

Arabesque - lifting one leg behind the other

Port De Bra - Movement of the arms

Pirouette - to sping

Plie - bend the legs

Animal Magic!

Date: 17th Mar 2021 @ 5:25pm

This week we have been continuing our animal topic by looking at animal patterns, making animal and repeating patterns, sorting animals (by the number of legs, climate, patterns) and reading the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? by Eric Carle.

We still continued to look for signs of Spring and drew pictures, wrote words, captions and sentences to capture these experiences.

PE - Invasion Games

Date: 17th Mar 2021 @ 3:42pm

Year 4 were practising their attacking and defending skills in PE this morning during invasion games. The children communicated well with their peers to support the games they were playing.

Mega Measuring

Date: 17th Mar 2021 @ 11:24am

This week we have been working hard in Maths to measure the length of various objects and the distance of various 2 points. We learnt how to use different meauring tools and convert between mm, cm and m. We worked practically to develop our skills and we applied our skills when we made our own challenges to solve using measures.

We have also been learning how to use different sorting charts, using our shape knowledge to practically create our own data.

Creating Graphs in Science

Date: 17th Mar 2021 @ 10:08am

We continued our learning journey in Science this week and created two graphs. We learned about the gestation period of different mammals and then plotted a scatter graph to help us to spot patterns. We concluded that, in general, animals with a longer gestation period had a longer lifespan. We then looked at the growth of babies and plotted a line graph to show the different growth rates of boys and girls.

Snap, snap!

Date: 16th Mar 2021 @ 4:38pm

This week we are learning some Nursery Rhymes. We started with 'Incy Wincy Spider' and today we learnt "Down In The Jungle". We made some super snapping crocodiles and we thought you might like to try too! Have a look at the pictures to see how you can make your own snapping crocodile.

Recreating Quentin Blake Illustrations

Date: 16th Mar 2021 @ 4:17pm

In today's lesson we looked at the artist, illustrator and cartoonist Quentin Blake. We studied the way he sketched his pictures and which of the 7 elements of art we could ideinitfy in his pieces of work. Using this, we then picked our favourite ilustration and tried to recreate the picture using the techniques learnt in this and the previous lesson. We think the results speak for themselves.

Riddles hunt!

Date: 16th Mar 2021 @ 4:16pm

Today in Reading into Writing, Year 2 went on a riddle hunt. We worked in pairs to try to solve riddles and get the most points. We will be going on to writing our own riddles very soon for you to solve!

Newspaper Articles

Well done to the Eco Warriors who worked hard during these unprecedented times to ensure this happened. Karyn from Eco Schools said “It is a true reflection of the school’s determination to make a real difference”.

Planting For The Future

Date: 16th Mar 2021 @ 9:34am

As I’m sure you have heard on the news, there has been extensive discussion about the environmental impact the HS2 development will have, including requiring the clearance of established and crucially important woodland habitats along its path. To mitigate the impact of this habitat removal, the HS2 project commissioned a nursery in Wales to grow several thousand oak trees that were supposed to be planted as new woodlands. However, despite growing the trees and them now being ready to go to their new homes, no plans to plant them were ever made, making it a double disaster that woodland has been cleared, but the new trees have never been planted.

After hearing about this through word of mouth, a few amazing guys in Liverpool raised some money to buy 3000 of these little oak trees from the nursery, who had to cover their basic costs, and those guys spread the word to find homes for all of these trees. The Lancashire Wildlife Trust heard about it and asked across their Nature Friendly Schools network. Westminster Primary is our Local Nature Friendly school and they spread the word to other Blackpool primary schools. It is these baby trees that our school received and altogether 33 schools across Lancashire, Manchester & North Merseyside offered homes for around 800 of these rescued trees.

They are all oak trees. Oak trees can live for several hundred years. So when we plant our little trees we are planting a legacy that will live far into the future, and provide a truly valuable habitat for insects and birds. By giving homes to these little trees we are doing a wonderful thing for nature.

The Eco Warriors helped plant them around the school grounds.

What a great first week back we have had in Reception.  The children have settled back into school and are eager to learn.  This week we have introduced our new topic 'Let's Go Wild' and the children have enjoyed learning about different animals, what they need to survive and the different habitats they live in.  We have also been busy in continuous provison making animals, practicing our reading, writing sentences, comparing and ordering numbers and role playing animal stories with our friends.  Have a look at some of our amazing work!

Classifying animals

Date: 12th Mar 2021 @ 4:06pm

Today we began looking at our Science unit of 'Classification'. We discussed what classification was and why scientists needed a system when classifying living things. As a challenge, we were given a range of vertebrates and invertebrates and asked to think how we would group them. Some of us chose to group them as mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. Some of us grouped them as living things that live in water, on land and in the sky. We will spend the next lesson looking at more scientific ways to group living things.

2D Shapes

Date: 12th Mar 2021 @ 7:55am
