Year 2 have been learning all about money this week. Firstly we explored lots of different ways that we use and need money and how it is earned. The children then started look at what money looks like. We found that we can use both coins and notes, there are a range of different colours, shapes and sizes and that we can measure its value in pounds and pence. Next week we are ready to look at making different amounts and finding different combinations.

In Maths this week we have been learning all about different charts, tables and graphs. On Friday, we learnt about Carroll Diagrams.
We have to use our social skills and team work to sort the objects into the Carroll Diagrams, first by 2 criteria (transport or animal), then by 4 (transport or animals and yellow or blue). It was tricky but we worked well together!

In science, we continued our learning about forces by investigating levers and pulleys. We learned that a lever can help you move a heavy object with less effort. Paint tins were opened, nails removed from wood and bottle caps removed - all with the help of everyday objects that act as levers. The children were even able to lift Mr Jones off the floor, after working out that moving the fulcrum closer to the load would make it easier!

This week we have celebrated Chinese New Year! We have read the story 'The Dancing Dragon' and talked about how people prepare to celebrate Chinese New Year. We learnt they clean the whole house, bake cakes, sing songs and hang up paper lanterns before all the friends and family join together for the New Years parade. In Nursery we have been painting lanterns hanging from the ceiling, we have been mark making with paint brushes and glitter, and we have even been painting boxes to make a big dragon! A lot of Nursery children have been very interested in our 'Funky Fingers' area this week, where we have been threading beads onto string to make patterns for the dragons body and making red and yellow paper chains to decorate Nursery. We have also looked at measuring noodles with cubes in our maths area, using language to compare the sizes of each string, such as short, medium, long. We have also been listening to music, using drums and learning the 'dragon dance.'

Year 2 were given a variety of images of landmarks around Australia. The children had to piece the jigsaws together to identify the locations and find out new facts! These included The Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Australia Zoo and Sydney Opera House. Year 2 then did a great job advertising the landmarks in their leaflets!

This week Year 2 have been learning about different types of animal classifications and explored how each one was unique. Children worked collaboratively and discussed many different animals and then made choices as to what classification they were, based on their individual features. Next we played guess who, where children had to describe the different features and the class had to guess which animal classification it was (E.g bird, fish, mammal, amphibians or reptiles). Afterwards children compared each of the classifications and discussed the similarities and differences between them.
The One With The Author - Dan Worsley
Date: 29th Jan 2020 @ 10:16am
Today, we were lucky enough to have Dan Worsley in to help write an opening to a jungle themed story. We looked at a setting description that Dan created himself so we could discuss the figurative language he had used and why; we were able to magpie some of his ideas. Thanks to Dan, we were able to grasp an idea of how to write our own jungle themed setting description and we can't wait to show him what we have achieved this time next week. Keep your eyes peeled for some our work being published on the website soon.
Thank you again to Dan for coming in to share some of his fantastic writing skills with us!
The One Where The Fire Service Visited Us
Date: 29th Jan 2020 @ 9:47am
We have had an informative afternoon, where Lancashire Fire Service came in to discuss the importance of having good 'Road Sense'. We looked at the importance of wearing a seatbelt, using a booster seat (up to 135cm in height), using helmets, being visible from dusk and crossing roads safely. We all showed a good understanding of how to be safe when walking to and from school and the importance of always using these rules, even when we go to high school.
Thank you again to Firefighter Luke and Will, who came in to see us - it was an extremely informative and relevant session.

We have continued to explore Winter this week in Nursery. We have enjoyed the story 'A Little Bit of Winter,' where we learnt about how Hedgehog hibernates during Winter, but asks Rabbit to save him a bit of Winter so that when he wakes up he can see what it is like. Could Rabbit keep his promise? We talked about what Winter feels like and investigated the difference between warm and cold objects. We then started using lots of different materials to make a den for Hedgehog to hibernate in. We found some materials worked better than others as they could keep Hedgehog warm and dry during the cold months. We also had some special scratch paper and pens to write messages to Rabbit and played 'Snowflake Swat' in our outside area, finding numbers and using swatters to identify them!

In our dance lesson today we revisited the types of gestures we would display before and during an exam: tapping head, yawning, stretching, looking at our watch and thinking. We enjoyed joining all of our movements together where we did them in unison and we contributed to adding a sequence in canon too, which looked extremely effective.
The Story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Date: 24th Jan 2020 @ 6:25pm
This week we have enjoyed the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears.’ We firstly read and discussed the story, talking about the characters and where the story is set, before getting busy with lots of activities! We have retold the story in our role play area, using different sized spoons, bowls and chairs, whilst also making chairs and beds for different sized bears in our construction area! As usual we have spent lots of time in our outdoors area, finding hidden bears and taking part in a police role-play to investigate Goldilocks! We have investigated with porridge oats, scales and containers to explore capacity and weight, and been exploring shape in the environment! See what shapes you can see whilst you are out and about over the weekend!
The One With The Glockenspiels
Date: 23rd Jan 2020 @ 9:19am
In today’s lesson we looked at another Carol King song - ‘One Fine Day’. We compared the three songs that we have listened to so far from Carol King - ‘You’ve Got a Friend’, ‘Loco-motion’ and ‘One Fine Day’.
We then used the glockenspiels to begin to follow the rhythm and pulse of ‘You’ve Got a Friend’. By the end of the lesson, we could recognise the notes: A, E, C, D, G and F on notation and play them in time with the beats and with each other.

Happy Halloween from Platform 1!
To celebrate Halloween we have made pumpkin biscuits, made Halloween shapes from playdough and practised our 5 times table with a Halloween twist!
Date: 11th Nov 2019 @ 9:43pm
In Platform 1, we have been doing a wide range of work based on Remembrance Day. We all thought of adjectives we could use to describe soldiers and created a range of poppy artwork. We also made our own poppies and planted them in Boundary's Remembrance Garden.

Year 2 enjoyed lots of fun activities on no pen day. We had lots of help on hand as well with many parents coming to have a look at what we've been learning. Firstly we looked at a range of different synonyms for a range of adjectives, this will help us when we come to write our setting description later this week. Later on during maths we looked at dividing numbers equally and we learnt how some numbers we can shared in different ways.
Date: 22nd Jan 2020 @ 7:40pm
The tables were cleared of all pens and pencils and we had a full day of lessons without any books. Our no pen day saw us working collaboratively and developing our communication skills. We held debates, discussed resilience and learned how to say the date in French. Our maths lesson involved working together to solve multiplication problems using counters and number cards and completing various puzzles.

Children have been learning about Christianity this half term. As part of the beliefs and values within the religion, children have been thinking about how God trusted the prophets and gave them a vocation. Using active listening skills and communication skills, children had to trust their partner to deliver them across the obstacle course safely. Children then read the story of Noah and acted out the screenplay, something they have been doing within their english lessons.

Today we continued our work on spreadsheets in Computing. We were taught how to create a table in Google Sheets and write in spelling results for 15 children over a six week period. With all the data put into the table, we were then shown how to use the SUM function to add up the children's spelling results and to use the AVERAGE function to find an average score for each child. To challenge us further, we were then show how to order columns alphabetically or order totals in ascending/descending order.
Date: 22nd Jan 2020 @ 1:03pm
On No Pen Day Year 4 had a day of learning without pens and tables. Every lesson involved active learning and discussion. We started our day with wake and shake, followed by drama and exploring characters emotions. In Maths we focused on recalling times table facts through star jump maths and playing pirates treasure. The children had to recall facts rapidly and discuss mathematical statements. Our afternoon was focused on developing our vocabulary, communication skills and memory. The children developed these skills through games such as 'What am I?' and 'What did I buy?' We ended our day developing our flexibility and agility through Yoga.
To the land down under! Australia here we come!
Date: 21st Jan 2020 @ 9:38pm
Year 2 were excited to fasten their seat belts ready for their jet setting adventure to Australia. Before we could go, we discussed all the important things we need when travelling aboard and what flying commercially is really like. Year 2 were lucky enough to have first class round the trip tickets to Sydney. Before our departure we ensured that we had the correct personal information on our passports and not to mention having our boarding passes ready for boarding. Next we boarded, with the help of our fabulous cabin crew (Miss Hartley and Mrs Crookall) who showed us to our seats. Then prepared for take off and took to the skies observing all the land, sea and clouds from 42,000 ft. We were kept entertained throughout our 22 hour flight with plenty of snacks and refreshments. Next stop SYDNEY!

Today, we had our second 'No Pen Day' of the academic year! Along with that, we had some of our parents come in to school and see their children learning. The parents enjoyed coming to learn some maths and watch the children tackle some challenging work - loop card games involving fractions, decimals and percentages and a square number problem where children had use patience, resilience and determination to find a solution. We also spent our morning looking at different ways on how we could practise our spelling without using pen and paper. We thoroughly enjoyed the 'Taboo' game where we had to describe a particular Year 5 and 6 spelling. In the afternoon, we learnt about adaptation and mutations - how plants and animals adapt in order the survive in a certain biome.
