States of Matter -Gases

Date: 16th Jan 2020 @ 9:27am

Within Science this week children have been learning about Gases. We discussed different uses of Gases in everyday life and how they are important within our working world. The children observed what happened when we mixed vinegar and baking soda together. They were able to understand there was a chemical reaction which resulted in the creation of Carbon Dioxide. The children understood this was how the balloon was inflated. Then the children used their knowledge of Gases and how they behave to make predictions for our Mentos and Coke experiment They children were able to discuss what they learnt from the experiments.

Quelle est la date?

Date: 16th Jan 2020 @ 9:20am

What is the date? We started our new French unit by learning the months of the year. We looked at the similarities between the English and French words and discussed how this could help us to remember the French months. We learned that the French do not use capital letters for months. The children enjoyed a matching game, a song about the months and we consolidated our learning by completing a listening exercise. Next week we will learn how to say the full date.

Icy Surprises!

Date: 13th Jan 2020 @ 8:50pm

This week the children in Holly Class had some icy surprises! The challenge was to get the objets out of the blocks of ice as quickly as possible but what would melt the ice the fastest? They used washing up liquid, sand paper, salt and warm water. We made our predictions and then set to work! We discovered that warm water melted the ice the quickest, correctly predicted by Hanasa, and sand paper and washing up liquid took the longest. The salt melted the ice almost as quickly as the warm water. Connor said, after predicting the salt would be the quickest, " I knew it was fast but warm water was quicker because it's warm".

"The ice is wet because it's melting" Kiera.

"When water is very cold it turns to ice" Lucas.

"The sun is warm and will melt ice" Mia

"The water in the tray is because the ice has melted" Rosalie.

Holly Class Forest School Fun!

Date: 18th Dec 2019 @ 8:19pm

It was a chilly afternoon but Holly Class need not worry- we made a fire to keep ourselves warm! How super exciting! We learnt about how to stay safe around a fire and were then able to toast marshmallows over it- we all agreed they tasted delicious, especially Mrs McAllister! Not only did we light a fire but we got to climb on planks over the mud and carry huge branches to make a den. It was a great way to end the half term before the Christmas holidays!

This week we have started to explore Winter and the seasonal changes that take place. We have spent time exploring the world around us and introducing our new starters into the Nursery environment! We have explored our investigation station using our senses, discovering crushed ice, glitter and snow, talking about animals who live in the artic regions. Our home corner has been transformed into a winter cafe, serving hot drinks and snacks to keep visitors warm! We have focussed on number in maths, counting objects accurately and recognising numbers. We will also be continuing to improve our pencil grip, pencil control and mark making skills!

Forest School Fun!

Date: 9th Jan 2020 @ 4:07pm

What a fantastic afternoon we had exploring our new Forest School Area. We made 'fat balls for the birds', pretended we were squirrels and hid food ready for hibernation and built shelters that we could hide in. However, I think for most of us our favourite part was getting as muddy as possible and jumping in all the mud puddles!

Spring 1 WOW - Our Tremendous Toys

Date: 9th Jan 2020 @ 3:57pm

Today we began to explore how toys and games have changed over time. We watched a video of what toys were like 40 years ago and how they have changed to the toys we play with today. We noticed that some games, like monopoly and dominoes have hardly changed at all but other toys are very different, like the dolls and computers we have today.

We had a wonderful afternoon exploring toys we each brought from home, we discussed what the toys can do, how many different parts the toy has, what material it is made from and how it can help us learn. We then wrote a ‘toy review’ on our favourite toy and gave it a star rating.
