Year 5 Forest School - Summer 1
Date: 13th May 2022 @ 11:28am
Year 5 have had their first out of three sessions of Forest School for this half-term.
Luckily, we had dry weather and were able to explore the forest area without getting super muddy!
The children made dens and wooden pencils, as well as exploring the pond.
We absolutely love being out in the fresh air!
Date: 12th May 2022 @ 8:32pm
This week we have read the fabulous story "Superworm" By Julia Donaldson. This story is great for developing an understanding of rhyme and the children were super at joining in with the rhymes. All our learning was based on the story and included comparing the size of worms, make worms of different lengths out of playdough and counting bugs and matching them to the correct numerals. The children got creative by making their own magic wands just like Wizard Lizards and made superworms living in a garden. They also practised writing their names by writing them inside a worm and explored capacity and what happens when they mixed different liquids to make magic potions.

This week, Reception decided to visit the pond again to observe how much the tadpoles had grown since we vsited last.
We were delighted to see that there were still some tadpoles sleeping on the stones or swimming through the water. There were no froglets or frogs to be seen - they must have been hiding or sleeping in the reeds.
Unfortunately, Reception were horrified to find loads of litter blowing around the pond and forest school area! They very quickly decided to collect it all up and put it in the bin- where it belongs! Our school grounds looks so much cleaner now.
"You shouldn't throw rubbish on the floor - it's dirty!" Olivia
"Our school looks dirty with all this rubbish " Charlie
"Put rubbish in the bin or recycle it!" Isaac
Reception Composition of numbers 1-10
Date: 12th May 2022 @ 11:57am
Reception have been busy exploring the composition of numbers within 10. They have been using the numicon to find all the different ways they can make a specific number. The children then recorded their calculations on a whiteboard. Fantastic problem solving!

During our Maths lessons, we often use manipulatives to solidify and furthen understanding. Manipulatives are physical objects such as blocks, counters and tiles that we can touch and move around.
Here are a few pictures to show how we used Base 10 to understand decimals.
Date: 11th May 2022 @ 4:24pm
In Year Three we have begun to look at telling the time and reading analogue clocks. We went outside to draw chalk clocks to see what we already knew about clocks. We thought about where the numbers are positioned and how we read it in different intervals of time.

In preparation for our Year 5 visit to the zoo, we have been learning about different amphibians and insects.
We first put a range of different animals into groups and discussed why we put them into those groups. Some children put the animals into blood types, land and sea animals or animals with a back bone (vertebrates). We will then go back at the end of the unit and re-classify them.
For our lesson, we became young David Attenborough's! We used SafeSearch to research the animals and used our online knowledge of Google Slides to create an interesting slide show.
Year 3 What is inside a plant?
Date: 11th May 2022 @ 4:02pm
In Year Three we have been investigating plants and today we focused on the different parts of a plant and what is the role of them. We carefully dissected lilies to locate the male and female parts of a plant and located parts such as the stigma, ovary, anther, stamen and petal.

This week in our RE lesson we used Now Press Play. This was focussed on the 5 Pillars of Islam and the children followed an amazing journey. This is the Now Press Play description: You are an alien agent from outer space, on a mission to find out about the 5 Pillars of Islam. When your spaceship crashes, you meet Maany, a ninety-year-old Muslim man. Together you travel to Mecca and he teaches you about Islam. The children had a great time on this experience and we discussed what we had done/learned about on the journey afterwards.
Year 6 sketching - introduction to Stephen Wiltshire
Date: 11th May 2022 @ 3:38pm
Today we began our sketching unit by looking at the life and art of the artist Stephen Wiltshire. We looked at his website and appraised some of his pieces - we discussed how he used line and value to create his pieces. We were very impressed with his city landscapes, many of which were drawn from memory. We are looking forward to completing more work in his style and learning about other artists.

Some of our Year 5 children have worked very hard over the last two days to achieve their level 2 award. They have demonstrated many of our Boundary Characteristics while completing all of their assessments. They learnt about bike maintenance and road safety
Date: 10th May 2022 @ 7:30pm
In PE this half term our learning is all about object manipulation. During our first two weeks we have been practising dribbling with a football, trapping a ball with our feet and turning with a ball. We have joined in with lots of games to practise these skills, using our prior knowledge of spatial awareness and finding the spaces within an area. We have enjoyed using the footballs to travel with a ball with confidence and skill.
Date: 10th May 2022 @ 7:12pm
In today's lesson we learnt how to follow instructions to achieve an outcome. We recapped on the features of instructions and how they need to be in the chronological order to make sense. We learnt the importance of checking our instructions and ensuring they have every step included. We discovered that we need to be clear and specific when giving instructions to enable a final goal to be reached successfully. We then gave instructions to Miss Kay, telling her how to make a jam sandwich. We saw what happens when we weren’t clear and how the end goal wasn’t what we wanted! We then worked in pairs to follow the correct instructions on how to make a jam sandwich.

This half term, Year Two are learning all about Mary Seacole. We started the journey by being History detectives and used photos of evidence to try and figure out who Mary Seacole was and the reasons why she was famous. We all had very different ideas about why she was famous and eventually figured out that she helped British soldiers in the Crimean war. We followed this on by exploring the key events in Mary's life and sequenced them and this week we have focused on what Mary's role was in the Crimean war. We were amazed at the acts of kindness Mary displayed towards British and Russian soldiers and how important she was in helping soldiers in the Crimean war.

Our pre-school children are busy preparing for their transistion in to Reception in September. We have started to put pictures of the children at different activites in continuous provision and they must complete their Mini Me challenge by the end of the session! This will be something the children will do when they are in Reception, so it is good practise! They have done really well so far and have all had a really good try at completing their challenge!
Date: 8th May 2022 @ 6:42pm
This week in music we got the glockenspiels out! After warming up and finding the pulse of a song we then started breaking down the different verses of 'Train is A-Comin' and the different notes used. At first, this proved to be quite hard becuase the tempo was extremely fast and there were a lot of notes to remember. After some perseverence and a slower tempo, we began to get the hang of it and performed really well! Looking forward to the next one!
Date: 8th May 2022 @ 10:42am
In Year 1, our current Reading into Writing journey is poetry. This week we have been immersing ourselves in lots of different examples! We have looked at a range of poems, including acrostic poetry. We have worked with a partner to read and find the features of each poem. We have been looking for: capital letters, adjectives, rhyming words, alliteration and similies. We will then be writing our own Spring acrostic poems using all the features we have found to help us!
Year 1 We're Going on a Plant Hunt!
Date: 8th May 2022 @ 10:33am
Today we were learning to identify and name some common garden and wild plants. We discussed the question, where do plants grow? We worked as a class to think of as many places as we could. We then learnt that garden plants are usually planted and looked after by people and wild plants grow wherever their seeds fall. We looked at lots of different examples of wild plants and garden plants. We answered questions like, how would you describe these plants? How are these plants similar? How are they different? And where might you see these plants growing? We then went on a plant hunt around our school outdoor areas. We worked together to create a tally chart of plants we found and drew some observational drawings.
Year 1 Having Fun with Improvisation
Date: 8th May 2022 @ 10:08am
In Year 1 this half term we are going to be exploring improvisation through the key question, 'What songs can we sing to help us through the day?' Our song for our first lesson was called 'Getting Dressed.' Through our understanding music task we practised finding and keeping a steady beat and copying simple rhythmic patterns using long and short notes. We then listened and appraised the song, before singing together as a group and having fun! We stood up straight to focus on our breathing, moved to the music and created actions for the song! We also then used the glockenspiels to play the notes C, D and E with the song we were performing.
Reception The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Date: 6th May 2022 @ 4:49pm
This week, Reception have been reading the story 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. They have been learning about the life cycle of a butterfly and have been observing the changes in our own class caterpillars. Using resources from our creative area, the children created their own caterpillars and then went outside hunting for them in our garden.
Date: 6th May 2022 @ 12:35pm
This week in Reception the children have been learning a new song about 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and used instruments to keep a steady beat. We also learnt a song aboiut Peter Rabbit and added actions for his curly tail and floppy whiskers. We used the claves to play syllables in a phrase to say goodbye.
Nursery Planting Sunflower Seeds
Date: 5th May 2022 @ 5:49pm
Today Nursery planted sunflower seeds. We recycled our used milk cartons and filled them with soil. Then we carefully pushed a sunflower seed in to the soil and gave it a little drink of water - not too much though! We didn't want to drown it! Then the children wrote their names on a lolly pop stick so they knew which sunflower was theirs. We talked about how we need to care for our seeds and make sure they have enough water and light to help them grow.
Year Three's final forest school fun!
Date: 5th May 2022 @ 4:19pm
Today was our final forest school session of year three! We enjoyed building dens, building a fire, filling the ponds, using tools and tasting dandelion fritters. Mrs Fielding's class enjoyed a pizza party for her birthday after making and building a fire.
Date: 5th May 2022 @ 4:06pm
This half term Year Two are practicing skills needed to play invasion games. This week we explored chest passes, under arm throwing and over arm throwing to accurately throw a ball and have our partner catch it. We worked on throwing different distances as we got more confident and adjusting which pass we used to ensure it had enough power to reach our partner. To the end the session, we played a game of Ghostbusters where people in bibs were trying to intercept the ball of the children who were 'ghosts' and throwing the balls to their partners. We really had to think hard about the passes used and the distance we were throwing to make sure the alien didn't intercept our ball.
Reception A letter from the giant in the sky...
Date: 5th May 2022 @ 9:21am
This week Reception had a very special letter delivered to our classroom. It was a letter for the giant in the sky who asked us to plant our very own magic beans outside in the garden. Together we discussed what we needed to do and thing we would need.
"We need a plant pot to put it in" Isaac
"You have to water it every day so that it grows bigger and bigger" Isobelle
"Make sure it is somewhere sunny" Jessica
"I'm going to climb up my beanstalk and go and see the giant" Charlie
Whose we had planted our beans the children wrote some fantastic instructions back in the classroom.
